The Senate narrowly confirmed California Attorney General Xavier Becerra Thursday to lead the Department of Health and Human Services. Becerra, who also previously served in the House of Representatives, was confirmed 50-49, with Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins joining Democrats in voting for him. The vote was the closest of any of President Joe Biden’s Cabinet nominees so far due to near unanimous Republican objections, citing Becerra’s stance on abortion and alleging that his only health care experience came from suing to protect the Affordable Care Act.

A NASA site in California is being considered as a potential location to house the growing number of migrants coming across the border, according to sources briefed on the plans. Sources told ABC News that plans are still in flux, but the site, Moffett Federal Airfield in Mountain View, is expected to house a number of unaccompanied minors in Customs and Border Protection custody, which has risen to just under 3,500 in recent weeks, according to sources and internal CBP documents reviewed by ABC News. Blunt said in a video that "after 14 general election victories — three to county office, seven to the United States House of Representatives, and four statewide elections — I won’t be a candidate for reelection to the United States Senate next year." The 71-year old Blunt, a member of Senate GOP leadership, said that he will finish out his current term, which runs through the end of next year.

Venezuela said it will introduce new large-denomination bolivar notes as hyperinflation renders most bills worthless, forcing citizens to turn to the U.S. dollar for everyday transactions. The country’s central bank posted a statement on its website Friday saying it would begin circulating the new 200,000, 500,000 and 1,000,000 bills to “fulfill the current economy’s requirements” without providing further details.

On July 24, 2020, Gov. Andrew Cuomo was asked about criticism of his handling of COVID-19 in nursing homes. His response:
“I believe it is a political issue. I think it’s the New York Post, I think it’s Michael Goodwin, I think it’s Bob McManus, I think it’s Fox TV. I think it is all politically motivated. If anybody looked at the facts, they would know that it was wholly absurd on its face ... "

The White House is bracing for a worsening situation at the U.S.-Mexico border as President Biden faces criticism from both political parties over the influx of migrant children. Biden's No. 1 priority remains the coronavirus pandemic. But the flow of asylum-seekers threatens to overwhelm the country's immigration system after it was overhauled by former President Donald Trump in ways that irritated Democrats.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas was dispatched this week to brief reporters at the White House, repeatedly blaming Trump's administration for the country's immigration predicament and warning it would "take time" to undo its "cruelty."

Throughout his presidential campaign and continuing since taking the White House, Joe Biden has promised a transparent approach to press and public relations. Yet in recent weeks, his administration has closed off — at least for now — several key avenues via which the press and public have for years gained a modicum of transparency, accessibility and accountability from the White House. These moves to curb press and public access come as President Joe Biden himself has at times appeared to be struggling with the public demands of his job.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) on Monday criticized certain Democrats for failing to support progressive demands for a $15 minimum wage, contending they are living in a “dystopian capitalist nightmare” and adding that the minimum wage should actually be $24 an hour. The New York lawmaker defended the progressive push for a $15 minimum wage during an appearance on The Mehdi Hasan Show.

If Joe Biden gives a State of the Union address sometime this March, it will be late, based on precedence, but still in accordance with an 87-year tradition. All of which brings up the question: if Joe Biden does not deliver or cannot deliver a State of the Union address, is he truly the president?
In 38 days, he has not held a full press conference. Each of us who frequent Townhall.com and read the articles has known for quite a while that poor old Joe lacks the cognitive capability to handle the job.

Andrew’s in the soup, that’s for sure. Wrap your head around this: The New York Times is reporting that Gov. Cuomo took time out from coronavirus hot-dogging last June to offer tattoo-placement advice to a just-turned-25-year-old female aide of no particular expertise during a private, closed-door sit-down in the state Capitol. Cuomo suggested “she should put the tattoo on her buttocks, so people would not see it when she wore a dress,” the paper says.

John Durham, a decorated career prosecutor, announced Friday he is stepping down at the end of the month as a U.S. attorney in Connecticut but will continue as special prosecutor investigating the origins of the Russia collusion probe that dogged the early Trump presidency. Durham’s announcement, which was widely expected as part of the transition inside the Biden Justice Department, allows him to focus on wrapping up the Russia investigation from Washington DC where the probe has been ongoing since 2019.
