New Colorado law will give state´s electoral
college votes to national popular vote winner

CNN Politics, by Caroline Kelly

Colorado could be part of voting history next general election day, joining 11 other states looking to ensure that their electoral college votes echo the will of the American majority to elect the next president. Gov. Jared Polis signed a law Friday that would allot the state´s electoral college votes to whichever candidate won the national popular vote. The Washington Post previously reported the law´s signing. The trend comes as Americans have shown greater support in recent years for a more democratic presidential election process, without the translational risks of the electoral college. But the daunting requirement of changing

So, does this law give Colorado´s electors to the winner of the popular vote in the next election? OR does it give them the the winner of the popular vote ONLY after enough states have passed such laws to reach 270 electoral votes?

The latter is the law passed by the other 10 states. I ope it is the former because then it can be challenged in court so that the courts can rule whether or not it is constitutional.

Its´s too bad they don´t understand why the US has the electoral college. Canada doesn´t have one and it should. If Ontario and Quebec vote for the same party, the rest of Canada may as well not vote. (Canada doesn´t vote for the Prime Minister-the winning party´s leader becomes the PM). I guess maybe the weed rattled their brains too much in Colorado? With their attitude NYC and CA would run the country. (those places aren´t in such great shape).

My dream scenario. Beto somehow manages to cobble together enough electoral votes to win under the old system, but Trump wins the popular vote, forcing Colorado to swing their 9 electoral votes to Trump, making him the winner. Colorado immediately sues itself in a desperate attempt to undo this unfortunate policy.

80.7% of the US population live in the cities. Democrats now want a democracy, otherwise known as two wolves and a sheep voting on what´s for dinner.
The founding fathers had the foresight to see the problem and give us an electoral college and a republic. Let´s not let them down.

Wouldn´t it be rich if Trump wins the national popular vote, loses the electoral vote nationally, but wins the election because Colorado has to switch its blue votes to red?

If you wanted to see liberals lose their minds, that scenario would have them all flying over the cuckoo´s nest.

Why do you think that the Democrats defend and support mass uncontrolled illegal immigration, open borders, and sanctuary cities.

If the Democrats ever legalize the current illegal alien population, that some now believe consists of about 22 million mostly all poor, uneducated, and socialist minded people mostly from undeveloped countries and grant them US voting rights there is little doubt that the current voter balance in the USA will be changed permanently to the Democrats favor, and that the Democrats will always end up winning the national popular vote with the big edge coming from just a few States with large populations. Once that happens the Republican Party as now constituted will not be able to elect a future President. That’s what this is all about.

The Constitution says: "Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress..."

I´m interested in knowing how a legislature directing that the state´s electoral vote go to the national popular vote winner is unconstitutional. There is no constitutional requirement that any elector vote for the election winner in any state.

One wonders what penalty there might be for an "faithless elector". (You may recall the campaign to deny Trump his victory this way. After the ´16 election, ten electors voted differently than they were pledged to vote. Hillary lost five of her pledged electors.)

The article also makes clear that "The state´s legislation would only take effect if enough other states sign on to secure the cumulative 270 electors needed to elect a president." Doubtful that will happen by 2020, but theoretically it could.

The purpose of this legal trick is to overturn the Electoral College result if the EC goes red but the popular vote is blue. Disregard high-minded rhetoric: it´s a bill to disenfranchise Republicans.

It will ONLY matter if Colorado electors overturn—defy—the will of the CO voter and thereby elect the candidate they voted against.

And though Denver-led liberals were the majority in 2016 and now, should this gimmick ever overturn an election, it will be at a moment when the majority of Colorado voters are NOT Denver-led liberals.

This is madness.

To #6 (it´s too bad they don´t understand why the US has the EC)-- they DO understand it. They just hate it. Really, really HATE it.

I can´t see it being declared unconstitutional. States can decide how to allocate their electoral votes any way they want to. They don´t even have to hold a Presidential election if they don´t want to; the state legislature can decide on electors.

It´s stupid, and I´ll be angry if my state does it (legislation pending) but it´s constitutional.

Thwarting the will of their own people. Where is the outrage? Are Republicans in these states so liberal-whipped that they say nothing?

It may be technically constitutional, but it is unconstitutional in spirit. These stupid (or crafty) people don´t care about the structure of our country. We are united *states*. The will of the people in each state matters.

I grieve this movement---and that people in the small states are so ignorant as to accept such a scheme to disenfranchise themselves. And that republicans and independents in *any* state would accept a scheme robbing them of their vote.

People will fall for anything if someone claims it is "more democratic."

One of the problems in the red states is the influx of people who have no emotional connection to the state and have no sense of the history of the state. That includes U.S. move-ins as well as foreign move-ins.

Texas is over-run now with people who have no sense of what it means to be a Texan. When traveling and we native-born are asked where we are from, we most often say "Texas." And people all over the world recognize that as a reasonable answer. When I think of what I am in general, Texan pops to mind first. It is a mind-set in the native-born Texan. It doesn´t mean we are less patriotic Americans; it means something else that I can´t even describe. But it is real.

My lineage goes back to the Republic of Texas. And to ancestors that fought for Texas independence and died at the Alamo and in the Goliad Massacre. Today they would weep to know that they died for such as this.

The electoral college and the way electors in the individual states have been allocated has been essentially the same since the US Constitution came into force a couple of centuries ago, in thatvrespect it has become settled constitutional law, and has worked well until the Democrats started coming up with all sorts of excuses as to why they lost the 2016 election with President Trump being elected. Clearly the Democrats intend to be the permanent dominant political entity in the USA, and will do anything, change electorial college long-standing protocols, grant US voting rghts to millions of socialist minded illegal aliens, grant 16 year old children voting rights, and initiate all sorts of bogus investigations targeting the Republicans that they can get away with to get their political dominacy plans accomplished.

Bill Clinton didn´t "win" the popular vote ~

He did win the electoral vote.

Now somebody is going to say "Hey, he got more votes than anybody else" but that´s nonsense. In our system we have been so used to only two real candidates with the winner getting more than half the votes, a "win" means something different.

BTW, most Presidents in modern times win the Electoral vote, but they do not win with more than half the total vote. We are that divided as a nation!

The Democrats in Colorado have not thought this process out. The result will be disastrous for their state.

Beto O´Rourke was confronted by an angry voter in New Hampshire Friday morning over a contribution he accepted from a fossil fuel lobbyist. The exchange between O´Rourke and the woman unfolded during a town hall at a tea cafe in Somersworth, N.H., after it came out that the 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful received a $250 donation from a Chevron lobbyist based in New Mexico on Mar. 29. The Texas Democrat has repeatedly fundraised on the basis that he has no ties to special interest groups. "I don´t take PAC money, have not taken PAC money for approaching five years now

The New York City Council on Thursday took a major step toward implementing a pillar of the Green New Deal, the aggressive blueprint for addressing climate change supported by U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. The council passed a bill that requires large buildings to meet new standards aimed at reducing their carbon footprint. The bill aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions from the city´s buildings by 40% over the next decade. That will require many building owners to take measures to make them more energy efficient. The bill is packaged with several other green initiatives in the Climate Mobilization

Vulnerable House Democrats, mindful of President Donald Trump´s continued strength among Republican voters, are using caution in how they respond to the special counsel´s report, which detailed Trump´s efforts to thwart the investigation into Russian efforts to help him win the White House. More than 30 Democratic representatives, many of whom are in their first term, represent districts that supported Trump in 2016. The party´s chances of keeping control of the U.S. House of Representatives likely hinge its ability to defend those seats. In the report released on Thursday, Special Counsel Robert Mueller said Trump may have obstructed justice

As far as tourist sites and monuments go, the Notre Dame Cathedral is one of the best places to visit. It is beautiful, big, right at the center of a tourist-friendly city, and—best of all—completely free of charge. (Snip) Thus, instead of responding with outrage to find the person who set fire to an enormous stone structure that has weathered nine centuries of so many wars and revolutions, officials quickly chalked it up to an accident related to renovation efforts and have already discussed plans for rebuilding. This is just an unfortunate thing that has no meaning or motive

Joe Biden has finally made up his mind and is ready to share it with the world. So says the Atlantic, which reported Friday that the former vice president will officially kick off his presidential campaign next week. Reports that Biden’s launch is imminent have been a staple of political coverage this year, but this one—confirmed by the Associated Press—has the kind of details that suggests this is not a drill: Biden plans to announce on Wednesday with a video featuring footage shot two weeks ago outside his old family home in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and will then follow it

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) issued a statement Friday tearing into President Donald Trump over the Mueller report, declaring he was “sickened” by its findings. Romney wrote, in a statement posted to Twitter, that it was “good news” Mueller’s team found insufficient evidence to charge Trump with conspiring with Russia to influence the 2016 election. “The business of government can move on,” he said. “Even so, I am sickened at the extent and pervasiveness of dishonesty and misdirection by individuals in the highest office of the land, including the President,” Romney continued.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg acknowledged that he would face challenges as an openly gay presidential candidate if he ultimately faced President Donald Trump in the general election. “I’m from Indiana, I’m gay as a — I don’t know, think of something really gay — that’s how gay I am,” he said in an interview with TMZ’s Harvey Levin.Levin warned Buttigieg that Trump campaign would most certainly turn homophobic. “I’m used to bullying,” Buttigieg replied. “I think you confront it, initially, and move on.” He said that as a presidential candidate he would focus on calling out Trump’s behavior but remain intent

The Flyers wasted little time in following the Yankees lead. A day after the Daily News reported the Yankees had stopped playing Kate Smith’s 1939 recording of “God Bless America” in the middle of the seventh inning over her racist lyrics, the NHL’s Flyers made the same call. And took the extra step of covering a statue in her honor outside the Wells Fargo Center. “We have recently become aware that several songs performed by Kate Smith contain offensive lyrics that do not reflect our values as an organization,” the Flyers said in a statement. “As we continue to look

For the first time in Vatican history, the pope allowed for the reading of Islamic prayers and Koran readings from the Catholic facility. The readings and prayer came as Pope Francis met with Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Vatican City, a gathering designed to pray for Middle Eastern peace. A Holy See spokesman said the prayers were supposed to be a “pause in politics,” Breitbart reported. The pope said, too, that he hoped the interfaith prayers would foster peace specifically between Israelis and Palestinians, the news outlet said.

And that includes when the president wants to go around the Congress’ power of the purse. But it certainly includes issues of malfeasance, corruption within the administration. There’s been little or no appetite to stand up to the president in any meaningful way, and that really

There have been a lot of viral impersonations of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on social media, but none have been quite this hilarious and adorable. Wearing glasses and bright red lipstick, a young girl brilliantly skewered the freshmen congresswoman in a way that put the current cast of Saturday Night Live to shame. The voluminous report from special counsel Robert Mueller provides a deeply disturbing portrait of a candidate who welcomed the help of a foreign country to get elected and of a president who repeatedly attempted to undermine Mueller’s investigation. Now it is up to Congress and the American people to objectively digest the report and determine the fate of Donald Trump, who in no conceivable way has been exonerated. Over more than 400 plainly written pages released Thursday, the report provides a readable narrative that describes Trump’s eagerness for any help Russia could provide to help him win the 2016 election.

"If you build it, he will come.” Puh-lease. Thirty years after the release of "Field of Dreams," it´s time for a major reassessment. Sorry, all you folks who view baseball — and this movie — as some sort of timeless metaphor for connecting to your past and understanding what America is really all about. In reality, it´s just another terrible film. If you can somehow get past all the factual errors and horrible casting — Ray "Goodfellas" Liotta as Shoeless Joe Jackson? — you realize this is nothing more than an epic helping of corniness, passed off as some
