LOS ANGELES, California — The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has received 270,000 applications from purported homeowners in the recent L.A. fires — though only abut 13,000 homes were destroyed.
A FEMA official gave the staggering figure — more than twenty times the number of eligible applicants — as concerns about fraudulent applications continue to plague the agency, more than two months after the fire. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth unveiled another round of cuts to programs Thursday worth $580 million that he claimed were either “wasteful” or didn’t align with the administration’s agenda.
With those cuts, Hegseth estimated that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has found roughly $800 million in savings so far at the Pentagon.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed a little-noticed executive order aimed at “achieving efficiency through state and local preparedness,” ordering National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and the heads of relevant agencies to establish policies to bolster America’s resilience to natural disasters and “move away from an all-hazards approach.” The executive order also states that the Trump administration is moving to give individual states greater authority over disaster preparations.

Canadian furniture maker Prepac is moving all of its production to the United States following the threat of tariffs on Canadian goods from President Donald Trump.
According to Unifor, Canada’s largest private sector union, Prepac is closing its manufacturing plant in Delta, British Columbia, to move all production to its manufacturing plant in North Carolina, which opened in 2021.
As a result, more than 170 Canadians will lose their jobs at the British Columbia plant. Unifor representatives suggested that those jobs will be moved to North Carolina.

Reps. Jen Kiggans, R-Va., and Jill Tokuda, D-Hawaii, introduced the Coast Guard Separation Parity Act, a bipartisan bill aimed at establishing “equal protections” for members of the Coast Guard by creating parity with the other armed forces.
The legislation would ensure that enlisted Coast Guard members who have served a minimum of 18 years would not be forced to depart the service two years shy of reaching a 20-year retirement. The proposal would provide them with the same protection and benefits

The New York Court of Appeals ruled 6-1 that the law — passed by the City Council in late 2021 — violated the state constitution.

An Alabama drug dealer who was freed from prison after being granted clemency by former President Joe Biden was arrested again this week.
Willie Frank Peterson, 52, was arrested on Monday for alleged drug possession and having a gun. He was arrested in Dothan, a city of about 70,000 people in Southeast Alabama. Peterson faces two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, three counts of illegally being in possession of a gun, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The Trump administration finally nabbed an immigration activist who ran from federal agents for years and hid in churches where she was shielded from arrest.
Jeanette Vizguerra, a 53-year-old Mexican mom of four, was once named one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People for hiding from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in a Colorado church.

Twenty years ago, maybe even ten, I’d have found stories about the administration cutting grants to universities and detonating thousands of campus-related jobs horrifying.
But the education sob stories now flying off the presses have a gigantic lie of omission.
Take Johns Hopkins.
NBC News was one of many to highlight the “grave consequences” the new administration’s policies have had on the famed institution, noting “the changes will also have an economic impact in Baltimore because the university is the largest private employer in Maryland.”
NBC pointed out that “about half of Johns Hopkins’ funding last year came from federal research dollars,
L.A.’s financial problems exploded into a full-blown crisis on Wednesday, with the city’s top budget official announcing that next year’s shortfall is now just shy of $1 billion, making layoffs “nearly inevitable.”
City Administrative Officer Matt Szabo advised the City Council to focus on cost-cutting measures, including a potential reduction in the size of the workforce, to bring the budget into balance for 2025-26.
Szabo, in his presentation to the council Wednesday, attributed the city’s financial woes, in part, to increased spending on legal payouts, which have ballooned over the last few years. Tax revenues have been coming in much weaker than expected
Earlier this month the Trump administration canceled $400 million in grants to Columbia University. In a subsequent move, the timing of which may or may not have been coincidental, Columbia finally punished students who had taken over an academic building last spring. Six students were expelled and 16 more were suspended or had their degrees revoked.
