We noted here that CNN and Jake Tapper are on trial in Florida, in a defamation case brought by former serviceman Zachary Young. Young helped people escape from Afghanistan; CNN smeared him as an “illegal profiteer” operating within a “black market.” Apparently it is now conceded that this was false. Young alleges that CNN’s smear destroyed his business.
We noted in the post linked above, at the jury selection stage, that there were six prospective jurors who said they think CNN purveys fake news, and only one who said he regularly watched CNN. The trial is now nearing its conclusion, and things have not gotten better for the cable network:

Certainly Not News had a nice long run as a respected world-wide organization, even securing a regular spot in the nation's airports as the go-to source of entertainment and distraction that was enjoyed between flights by millions of people. Now they are spectacularly crashing as just another lying, progressive has-been in a race to the bottom.

Judge: "The jury has reached a verdict. I will read the verdict tomorrow. CNN, bring your checkbook."

For the longest time they were really a respected channel. All they played was news. It wasn't personalities behind the desk, and little or no obvious opinion. Then the Gulf War happened and it all fell apart. All of a sudden we had Wolf and Armanpour and the story became about the reporter. Rather than fix the problem, they doubled down on it and now they are all communist opinion all the time.
I haven't watched them for years as they are damaged beyond redemption. I'd rather go back to the wire services scrolling across a blue background, which I actually enjoyed.

CNN, meet reality.
Propaganda media had decided they could do ANYTHING and were Constitutionally immune from repercussions. Oops, while that might be legally true for the political arena, it is NOT for the public arena and their arrogance in pushing political propaganda via attacks on private citizens made them overreach and in their fading, money losing, situation, this will probably hit them hard.
Further, this is going to cast a chill over the propaganda media in general. After one such judgement, others will follow. Each loss costs in both money and reputation, neither of which the media can afford to lose.
The propaganda media continues to circle the bowl.

Occasional reminder: CNN and MSNBC and numerous other cancers still exist because of cable, satellite and now streaming bundling. Charging customers $100/month for 50 channels when they only watch 5 means some of that money goes to channels unwatched/unwanted.
In the coaxial days bundling was something of a technical necessity because filters were used to, er, filter out premium channels - which is why the cable guy could get you HBO for free if you bribed him on the spot to sort out the wires.
In the digital era bundling is totally unnecessary but persists for two reasons: it's a moneymaker for the carriers and government refuses to do anything about it. FCC, FTC should have stopped this practice years ago but AT&T, Time Warner/Spectrum et al make huge political contributions and are left alone. Hence the survival of CNN.
But dismal ratings (less than 100,000 viewers in a nation of 170M televisions) will eventually sink them with or without bundling and it will be glorious.

I won't be surprised if there is a huge settlement with a non-disclosure provision while the jury is deliberating (or before it even gets to them), and Zachary Young walks away with so much money that he'll never have to work again. One the other hand, he may be in it to humiliate CNN, in which case the whole case will play out and any settlement with be after the jury renders a verdict.

FTA: "“I’ve won a few Emmy awards. That’s kind of the main award in television news.”
From Wikipedia: "The Emmy Awards, or Emmys, are an extensive range of awards for artistic and technical merit for the television industry."
In other words, Marquardt, you got your Emmys for being artistic and technical workmanship, not for excellence in journalism, or any other kind of journalism.

CNN has a smaller viewing audience these days than the Food Channel. They can't last much longer. I hope Zachary Young gets a judgment against them while they still have some money left.
