The American Ornithological Society (AOS) announced Wednesday it will be renaming dozens of birds to “address past wrongs,” according to the association’s website.
The AOS agreed in April 2021 that birds named after slave owners and colonialists should be renamed to make the bird watching community more inclusive. The effort to rename birds will focus on 70-80 species that exist mostly within the U.S. and Canada and is a part of the decision to “reframe the issue of birds named after people altogether,” according to the AOS. “As scientists, we work to eliminate bias in science."

Blackbirds will now be known as birds with plumage of excessive melanin. Wordy, but no one is offended.

Next they’ll have to rename the loon and the cuckoo in ways that are less descriptive of The American Ornithological Society.

I'm guessing that those-who-are-perpetually-offended can't tell the difference between a Blue Jay and a Crow. Stupidity reigns.

FTA: “Ornithologists have long grappled with historical and contemporary practices that contribute to the exclusion of Black, Indigenous, and other people of color, including how birds are named,” the AOS announcement reads.
Oh, brother. I had no idea bird watchers were such sensitive, little snowflakes. I’d be willing to bet that this is a small, loudmouth contingent of the AOS that happens to have some control over the narrative. Before their silly declaration, no one knew who a particular species of bird was named after. What time-wasting nonsense.

Bloody waste of time. I have to wonder what they are up to, to approach such a useless task.
A Rose, by any other name, is still a Rose.
Same thing will hold true for birds. Are extinct animals, next? Rename those discovered by person who didn't hold the right values?
Stinking waste of time and money. Somebody is set to line their pockets!

I'm sure the bird watching world is much safer now for women, children, minorities, LGBTQ, and Trans individuals from the violence of bird names. Birds will no longer indiscriminately attack Black people for no reason or stay out of Black and minority areas once their slavery related names are changed. Do people really have that much time on their hands that they can go back and look up whether the person who a bird was named after or named a bird might have been associated with slavery? This is something that NOBODY (until now) would have ever known or cared about until some sniveling Karen decided to make it an issue.

Here's one suggestion for these compulsive busybodies. Some of us think that the names of the American turkey, as well as the turkey vulture (or buzzard) might be considered disrespectful to our NATO (alleged) partner that wants some of Israel in this war and their ambitious Islamist leader Erdogan. So on November 23 this year, you won't be roasting a turkey. From now on, it's a Türkiye.
