Washington - Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm announced a "major scientific breakthrough" Tuesday in the decades-long quest to harness fusion, the energy that powers the sun and stars.
Researchers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California for the first time produced more energy in a fusion reaction than was used to ignite it, something called net energy gain, the Energy Department said. The achievement will pave the way for advancements in national defense and the future of clean power, Granholm and other officials said.
"This is a landmark achievement for the researchers and staff at the National Ignition Facility who have dedicated their careers to seeing fusion ignition become

Federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York unsealed charges against disgraced FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried, charging him with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and securities fraud, standalone charges of securities fraud and wire fraud, money laundering, and significantly, conspiracy to defraud the United States and campaign finance regulations. The eight charges form the bedrock of the attempt by U.S. prosecutors to pursue Bankman-Fried for his alleged crimes. Federal prosecutors say that Bankman-Fried had been engaging in criminal activity as far back as 2019.

Over the weekend, a massive caravan of thousands of illegal migrants, mostly from Nicaragua, crossed the border into West Texas in a stunning surge that shocked immigration agents, neighboring towns, and state officials.
By Monday, over 5,000 illegal immigrants had arrived at the Border Patrol’s central processing center in El Paso, Texas, officials told the New York Times. They estimated that about 2,000 people came to the U.S. each day, with the largest influx reaching 800 to 1,000 migrants on Sunday night.
State Senator César J. Blanco, who represents the region, argued that the situation is untenable,

President Joe Biden invited a drag queen who performs for children to the White House on Tuesday to witness the signing of the “Respect for Marriage Act,” which enshrines same-sex marriage into law.
Drag queen activist Marti Cummings celebrated the invite on Twitter, and though he keeps his account private, the Libs of TikTok account shared Cummings’ status“To be a non binary drag artist invited to the White House is something I never imagined would happen. Thank you President & Dr. Biden for inviting me to this historic bill signing. Grateful doesn’t begin to express the emotions I feel,” Cummings tweeted while sharing a screenshot of the White House invite.

Bari Weiss has just published the fifth installment in Elon Musk’s exposé about the rampant corruption in Twitter. This matters because Twitter is no ordinary company. Even more than Facebook or other social media sites, it was the dominant platform for political speech in America—and Twitter employees were Maoists waging a cultural revolution against President Trump and anyone who voted for him.
I’ll load Weiss’s tweets below, but here’s the quick summary: On January 8, Trump loaded two tweets, one saying that the 75,000,000 Americans who voted for him would be heard and the other saying that he would not attend Biden’s “inauguration” (or,

An independent cybersecurity data analyst working alongside top officials at Twitter found accounts posting content that allegedly sexually exploited children garnered more than ten million views on the platform under previous ownership.
Andrea Stroppa, founder of cybersecurity group Ghost Data, personally funded research last summer that resulted in the eradication of more than 500 accounts soliciting Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), which led approximately 30 major advertisers to pull or pause their ad services on their Twitter accounts.

Twitter on Monday night disbanded its Trust and Safety Council, the department that critics claimed engaged in disproportionate content moderation of conservatives and accounts that expressed unorthodox political ideologies.
The company announced in an email, “We are reevaluating how best to bring external insights into our product and policy development work. As part of this process, we have decided that the Trust and Safety Council is not the best structure to do this.”
Yoel Roth, the former global head of Trust and Safety who resigned after Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter, was responsible for leading the team that suppressed the Biden-laptop bombshell exposed by the New York Post.

We previously reported on Dec. 9 about the sudden death of Grant Wahl, a sports journalist in Qatar covering the World Cup. He collapsed suddenly during the quarterfinal game between the Netherlands and Argentina. Wahl had just turned 48. Wahl had previously had trouble with security at the stadium in Qatar for wearing a rainbow shirt on Nov. 21. He was initially refused entry and detained for 25 minutes before he was allowed into the stadium. At one point, there was a scuffle, according to Wahl, who wrote at the time that one guard ripped his phone forcibly out of his hand. Ultimately, he said they apologized

Former Department of Energy official Sam Brinton no longer works for the department, a spokesperson told the Washington Examiner on Monday, amid allegations that Brinton has been involved in multiple luggage thefts.
“Sam Brinton is no longer a DOE employee. By law, the Department of Energy cannot comment further on personnel matters,” the department spokesperson said in an email. Prior to Monday's report, the department claimed that Brinton, who is nonbinary, was placed on leave but refused to comment on whether the leave was paid. It is not clear whether Brinton resigned, or was fired from the department.

Billionaire Twitter owner Elon Musk continued his war of words with critics after being booed at length by the audience at a Dave Chappelle show Sunday night in San Francisco.
“The woke mind virus is either defeated or nothing else matters,” he tweeted Monday morning after facing a tough crowd at a Punchline Comedy Club event at the Chase Center when Chappelle brought him on stage. The boos, and some cheers, followed months of controversy at the social media platform he’s owned since late October and a series of inflammatory Anthony Fauci-bashing tweets by Musk over the weekend, which were applauded by far-right Georgia Rep. Marjorie Talyor Greene. “My pronouns
