A man whose voice is synonymous with baseball for generations of Dodgers fans (both in Brooklyn and Los Angeles), and for fans of America’s Pastime in general, Vin Scully, has passed away at the age of 94. The organization announced the sad news via a social media post that was released during the team’s Tuesday night contest against the rival San Francisco Giants. The post reads:
He was the voice of the Dodgers, and so much more. He was their conscience, their Poet Laureate, capturing their beauty and chronicling their glory from Jackie Robinson to Sandy Koufax,

Long live one of the greatest of all time. Rest in God's arms, Vin. Absent the body present with the Lord. May he bless you and keep you always.

#2 - Me, also. The Dodgers came to L.A. when I was a little girl and Dad was a huge fan. I grew up hearing that voice. Vin's most amazing talent was his ability to be telling an amusing story during a lull in the game and interject an, "low and outside, ball two", then continue on with the story without missing a beat. I haven't been able to listen to a Dodger game since he retired.
I bet Tommy's glad to see ya. God bless Vin Scully, and grant unto him the perpetual light.

I once heard him quote Shakespeare while a Dodger was running to first on a drag-bunt single. He also said that Willie Mays was the best player he ever saw. He was the best FOOTBALL announcer I ever heard in his Super Bowl gigs and great at golf, too. I'm so sorry he died. My earliest memory of him is "...blowing you smoke rings from the coliseum" in 1959 broadcasts. Dual-filter Tarytons were sponsors you see.

There will not be another like him. Heard him at my daughter's commencement speech, full of great stories.
I've listened to baseball broadcasts on tv and radio since I was a kid. These days the announcers are like robots, no one has a personality. I guess they're all afraid they'll say something wrong and get fired.

I grew up listening to the voice of John Facenda. He was a news anchor in Philly for years. Anyone outside of Philly knows the voice, but not the name. John Facenda was the voice of NFL films. Vin Scully is like that to me as well. It's a voice that once heard, you can never forget. There are a number of announcers over the years just have THAT voice.

Watched a game or two at Ebbets Field with granddad and listened to Red Barber and Scully on WGMS radio (had to check that one).
Both guys knew what it was. RIP, Vin.

So pathetic that none of the current pack of annoying sports announcers ever had the brains to realize what made him so popular. First his soothng voice and hie solid knowledge. He never wanted a partner. bless him, because he wanted to speak to his audience rather han making them spectators to a conversation between him and a partner. The current Dodge announcer loves having a partner. Orel Hershiser a retired fine player who is a bland, blah, bore. And for games away from Los Angeles, Jessoca Mendoza,, a fading fomer softball player, who thnks she is still really really cute. She never shuts up and the main announcer likes it that way. The Angels away games often ffeature insufferable Matt Vesgarsian,, who began his TV career as a game show contestant and then host. A ferrety little man, he loads up with baseball stats and trivia and reads it instead of calling the game. Havng been with ESPN for a while, he usually talks up the opponents although he is the “Angels announcer”.

When I was a little kid growing up in LA, I used to hide my transistor radio under my pillow in order to listen to Vin Scully and the Dodger games. I thought that I had Mom and Dad fooled. I didn’t. I’m now 70.
If you can get the replay of Vin’s announcement of the 1988 Kirk Gibson World Series Game 1 at bat and home run, do so. RIP.
