Amazon founder Jeff Bezos issued a statement late Saturday about Friday night's warehouse tragedy in Illinois, hours after he was blasted on social media for seeming quiet on the topic amid the latest flight of his Blue Origin spacecraft.
"The news from Edwardsville is tragic," Bezos posted on Twitter after 9 p.m. ET. "We're heartbroken over the loss of our teammates there, and our thoughts and prayers are with their families and loved ones.
"All of Edwardsville should know that the Amazon team is committed to supporting them and will be by their side through the crisis.

St. Cloud—Move over, Spanish and French. St. Cloud public schools next year will be offering Somali and Ojibwe to all students as elective languages. "It just makes sense for us to have it," said Lori Posch, executive director of learning and teaching for St. Cloud schools. "We want to see our students represented in our courses." The move comes after the St. Cloud school district this fall introduced what is thought to be the first native Somali language course in the state—and possibly the nation—for secondary students. Some students who are immigrants or refugees have limited or interrupted formal education.

President Biden on Saturday addressed the fatal weather that ravaged parts of the South and Midwest and used the tragedy to further his own beliefs on climate change.
While speaking to reporters and virtually assessing the tornado damage from Wilmington, Delaware, Biden was asked whether he "could conclude that these storms and the intensity have to do with climate change."
"All I know is that the intensity of the weather across the board has some impacts as a consequence of the warming of the planet and climate change," Biden said. "The specific impact on these specific storms, I can't say at this point."

Alabama sophomore quarterback Bryce Young won the 2021 Heisman Trophy on Saturday at the Jazz at Lincoln Center concert venue in New York City.
“This is amazing,” Young said when his name was announced as the winner. He then thanked an array of people, from his parents to his coaches, for his success.
Nearly 900 sports journalists, 57 living former Heisman Trophy winners and fans voted to determine the winner of the award, presented annually to the most outstanding player in college football.
Young received 684 first-place votes. Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson finished second, Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett finished third and Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud finished fourth.

WASHINGTON—A special Customs and Border Protection unit used sensitive government databases intended to track terrorists to investigate as many as 20 U.S.-based journalists, including a Pulitzer Prize-winning Associated Press reporter, according to a federal watchdog.Yahoo News, which published an extensive report on the investigation, also found that the unit, the Counter Network Division, queried records of congressional staffers and perhaps members of Congress.Jeffrey Rambo, an agent who acknowledged running checks on journalists in 2017, told federal investigators the practice is routine. “When a name comes across your desk you run it through every system you have access too, that’s just status quo, that’s what everyone does,” Rambo was quoted

Last summer, several Minneapolis city council members joined Rep. Ilhan Omar at a rally where they vowed to “end policing as we know it.” A local newspaper noted ominously that these officials constituted a veto-proof majority of the city council. Change was in the air.Four weeks ago, however, the incumbents heard from the thousands of Minneapolis voters who had not attended their anti-police rally. Change was in the air, all right — but not the change radicals were hoping for. When the dust settled, three incumbents were knocked off the council by challengers who promised to maintain or even increase law enforcement.

Vermont's Essex-Westford School District, which includes the town of Essex that last year fired a high school lifeguard for merely questioning Critical Race Theory, has done it again. In the midst of a national furor over a sexually explicit graphic novel, the school has proclaimed it has the duty to expose children to pornographic imagery — to support free speech.
It is axiomatic that free speech rights do not extend fully into schools — they never have. For example, the First Amendment protects quite a shocking variety of pornographic materials, including bondage and rape videos. Are those acceptable, protected school teaching materials?

There are some weeks for which it is painful to be a conservative. The week of Election Day 2020 was one such week, and so was the week of January 6th, earlier this year. And then… then there are weeks for which it is absolutely glorious to be a conservative. Such weeks include instances when our allies are vindicated, or perhaps our conservative ideals are validated. Objectively, the news on the economy over the last few weeks has not been encouraging. November’s jobs report showed a miss of over 50%. Then yesterday’s inflation numbers dropped like a thermonuclear weapon on the White House’s narrative. After a week of colluding with the media and waging a PR war to try to convince people the economy is actually great, inflation was revealed to be 6.8%, the highest in 39 years.
Naturally, the polling has shown significant disapproval with the situation, whether we are talking about Joe Biden personally or the right-track/wrong-track numbers.

Where is Paul Volcker when you need him? In the early 1980s, the late Federal Reserve chairman stared down double-digit inflation and made it blink first. Back when huge shoulder pads were in and Twisted Sister was at the height of its popularity, Volcker helped President Ronald Reagan wring inflation out of the economy in what proved to be an extremely traumatic but also necessary process. Volcker’s work in constricting the money supply with interest rates almost unthinkably high — the federal funds rate peaked at 20% — helped pave the way to the economic expansion of the Reagan era.

Store theft is now done openly. People load their arms or shopping carts with stuff they want and simply walk out the door. After closing, mobs of them smash the storefront and grab what they want. I’m reminded of stores in Mexico where padlocked steel curtains cover the glass storefronts each night. After closing, the store become a little fortress.
The left explains that this isn’t looting because . . . reasons. One reason is that it’s really a protest for social justice, whatever that is. Another reason is that stores have insurance, dontcha know, and so stealing from them isn’t really stealing.

Former President Donald Trump, should he run again in 2024, continues to have an edge against President Joe Biden. While Trump has not yet announced any formal plans, he has increasingly been teasing that a run is likely. Other people also think he will run in 2024.
A poll released on Thursday by Redfield & Wilton Strategies shows Trump with a plurality of support over Biden. Forty two percent of voters would vote for Trump in 2024, while just 38 percent would vote for Biden.

Joe Biden may be celebrating his historic achievement in reaching an inflationary milestone previously set by Jimmy Carter, but the working class is paying the price for their economic stupidity. (graphic)The Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the November inflation rate today [DATA HERE] showing another rise in the annualized rate of inflation of 6.8 percent. As you review the data, ask yourself this question: ‘Is there anything in the current economic landscape to indicate this is going to stop?’ The honest answer is no. Here’s why…
As the BLS accurately (albeit briefly) notes, their inflation data reflects the cumulative increases in costs of products and services at all

At least 50 people are thought to have been killed in Kentucky after tornadoes ripped across the South and Midwest of the US on Friday.Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear estimated the toll would 'exceed 50' but could reach 100 after 'some of the worst tornado damage' the state has experienced 'in a long time'. 'It's been one of the toughest nights in Kentucky's history,' Beshear told a news conference early on Saturday. 'I fear that there are more than 50 dead in Kentucky... probably closer to somewhere between 70 and 100, it's devastating.'A spokeswoman for the state's emergency management service said that rescue officials had not confirmed figures

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is proposing an interesting legislative approach to curb the White House illegal immigration process. In essence, what the Florida legislature will be enacting are laws that restrict any private company from doing business in Florida if they are participating in the federal programs to distribute illegal aliens.
If a federal contractor facilitates the transport, housing or subsidy of an illegal alien into Florida the state will block that contractor from any state level business relationship. “The legislation proposed today will make clear that the State of Florida will not provide any discretionary benefits to illegal aliens and will also prohibit state and local agencies from

Constitutional experts are raising doubts about the legality of the bill approved by the lame-duck New York City Council Thursday that will grant 800,000 non-citizens the right to vote in municipal elections.Mayor Bill de Blasio — who has raised legal concerns about the measure and is leaving office at year’s end — said he will still allow it to become law, declining to veto the measure. It will give legal, non-citizen residents such as green card holders the right to vote in local races but not state or federal elections. The state Constitution, Article 2, Section 1, grants the right to vote in all elections to “every citizen”

At least two people were killed Friday night when a reported tornado ripped through an Arkansas nursing home, and emergency crews in southern Illinois were also responding to reports of injuries at an Amazon warehouse after a roof collapsed amid storms there.
Craighead County Judge Marvin Day told The Associated Press that a tornado struck the Monette Manor nursing home at about 8:15 p.m., trapping 20 people inside as the building collapsed. About 90 minutes later the building had been cleared and everyone initially believed to have been inside had been accounted for, but Day said crews still must search the debris for possible additional victims.

Amid growing worries over Covid and the economy, President Joe Biden’s approval ratings in both areas took yet another hit while Americans’ preferences for congressional control swung sharply towards Republicans.
Results in the CNBC All-America Economic survey imply potentially large Democratic losses in the November election.
Biden’s overall approval rating stabilized at a low level of 41%, about the same level as former President Donald Trump’s, compared to 50% who disapprove. But Biden’s approval rating on handling the economy and dealing with the coronavirus both declined

We have noted the rapid decline of the Democrats’ popularity among Latinos. A group (if it makes sense to refer to such a diverse collection of voters as such) that has strongly supported Democrats until recently now is evenly split in its backing of the two parties, according to recent polls.
Ruy Teixeira argues that the news on Latino voters is even worse than now perceived. It’s noteworthy that Teixeira says this. In 2004, he, along with John Judis, wrote The Emerging Democratic Majority. They predicted that the rise of America’s Latino population would confer clear majority status on Democrats in the coming decades.

The US Supreme Court handed down a long-anticipated decision called Whole Woman’s Health vs. Jackson this morning.
By way of background, on September 1, S.B. 8, the so-called “heartbeat bill” went into effect in Texas. The law had some unique features. First and foremost, it outlawed abortion after the point of a detectable fetal heartbeat. This was a clear challenge to the whole inhumane sham structure of abortion jurisprudence brought into existence by Roe vs. Wade. However, the most interesting feature was creating a private right to action to enforce the law. That means anyone can bring a lawsuit against anyone or any entity
