I’m a first-generation, 17-year-old Black American who grew up in Bedford-Stuyvesant, the Brooklyn neighborhood made famous by Jay-Z.Given that brief biography, perhaps you’d assume that I’m a Black Lives Matter slogan-chanting, capitalism-chastising teen activist. Or that I’m an at-risk youth, destined for dropping out or incarceration. You’d be wrong on both counts.I’m a religious Christian and political conservative with an after-school job as a dishwasher at Panera: three things that, if we’re to believe the statistics about Gen Z, make me an outlier.

How can this be? This kid is more American and wholesome than Gen. Panty Hose Milley, who's still trying to understand "white rage".

This young mans biggest blessing is parents who act like parents. Like puppies, kids need rules, boundaries and limitations. Discipline is love but it doesn’t feel like love in the moment. It’s a lesson many parents aren’t learning anymore.

Daniel's parents have done an excellent job. Daniel has done an excellent job. I'm sure it is difficult to not give in to peer pressure these days. He must have some good, like minded friends. I also must note that his parents are immigrants and he is first generation here. They still see and appreciate the opportunities that this country offers them. Too many people born here have become complacent and lazy, expecting everything to be given without working for it.

Kudos to his parents and a big hearty congratulations to this young man for respecting them enough to listen and learn from them. I am proud of this young man and can only imagine the way his parents feel about his success. This young man is grounded, determined and willing to do the hard work it takes to succeed. I love reading stories like this one and wish this young man every success in life. Well done, Mr. & Mrs. Idfrense.

My best wishes to you Daniel. I don't have the words to describe how proud I am that you are setting such a good example. May your example give others of your generation hope and courage. God bless!

Mostly right - but goodwill alone will not save one's soul. THAT, Daniel, DOES require one believe in God. But at least you are on the path and for that we can thank your parents.

Does anyone think that it is no longer worth fighting and sacrificing for America 2021?

The stand out for me to his success story~ hard school work? yep; stay out of gangs? sure; living his faith with purpose? of course, but having a solid 2 parent household, no matter how poor, has given him the ultimate leg up on millions of un-fathered children, black or white. All the best to him & his family!!

Not at all. When I hear "first generation" I know that you are most likely a hard worker, you value an education, and you are very much aware of the great gift it is to be born in America. You also are more likely to see that your color does not hinder you because you have not bought into demeaning message that you are not worthy. Hopefully you also have had a chance to see how much conservatives welcome you into our America-loving fold.
