The Washington Post reports that the current U.S. Senate is the oldest in American history. Dianne Feinstein turns 88 this month. Charles Grassley turns 88 in September.
Richard Shelby is 87. James Inhofe is 86. Patrick Leahy is 81. Twenty-three senators are in their 70s. The average age of senators at the beginning of this year was 64.3 years.
It may be that being 88 now is like being, say, 78 a few decades ago. So despite being the oldest, this might not be the most age-impaired Senate in our history. Robert Caro’s book about the Lyndon Johnson-dominated Senate makes it clear
I get the point that the author is trying to make, but as bad as these old fossils are, what is coming up in the ranks of the youthful are even worse. We are now getting the likes of AOC and the rest of the Squat - pure communist dupes that are profoundly stupid and militantly proud of it.
When these old dinosaurs are replaced by what is coming, we will long for the old days.

The problem is , not unlike a retiring rock star, is when they step down there is a huge posse of enablers and aides who have lost sugar daddy. So don't expect them to go along with it. There comes a time when the 'elected' is simply a figurehead, not unlike the Biden issue.

These old coots stay in office for life so that once they die, they can be publicly displayed in the Rotunda for their last hooray. Meanwhile they've spent years enriching themselves and screwing the public.

It seems to me that there are some very good candidates coming up in the ranks, and if we clean up our election system, maybe those who have integrity will be allowed to get into office. Maybe the swamp could be drained.

What’s the big deal? These senators paid good money for those slots. Where else can you find a gig that pays less than $200K but can still make you a multi-millionaire.

I'm surprised that Leahy is "only" 81. He looks and acts as though he's much older and ready to expire at any moment.

I’ve been saying we need to send the geriatric crowd home for years. So what if the younger crowd doesn’t exactly match your tastes as far as political ideas go.....I’ll take a younger candidate that hits the majority of the issues I care about over the geriatric incumbent who think the Internet is for fishing...😎. We were all young once and learned...

Wisdom does not come with age nor does clear thinking come with youth. We might as well choose these deadbeats based on skin color. The overall results are always underwhelming.

The senate is not quite as senile as the Biden regime.

Just think over the next few years all those elderly old line liberal Democrat lawyer-politicians now holding down seats in the US Senate are bound to be replaced by much younger leftist and socialist Democrats.

The problem isn't age in most cases. Its the big government policies they are backing. Would say term limits are the answer, but look at the track record of the American voter. Every clown in Washington was voted into office. That includes Biden! Biden may have stolen the election with five million fraudulent votes, but that doesn't deny the fact that seventy million people voted for this corrupt idiot. Which is worse? The 5 million fraudulent votes or the seventy million that voted for Biden?

Okay then - Since we can't fire them because they are ineffective at this point - can we at least fire them for what they have put into effect in their youth?

Wasn't Winston Churchill up in age when he took over from that idiot Chamberlin and turned around WWII?

Re #17. Churchill was 66 when he became PM. Also said to go through a bunch of cigars and a quart of brandy a day. Trump at 78 had more energy than a dozen men combined of that age. Whatever works...I’ll take either one as a real leader.

FTA: "The obvious answer is a constitutional amendment imposing term limits. But term limits are anti-democratic. They deprive voters of the ability to elect Senators of their choice."
So instead of term limits, how about cumulative years of service in elected office limits? An individual can only serve in elected office 25 years or 50 years or whatever, in their lifetime?

Apologies for a second post. All of these over educated people say they can't find good careers. No one will retire. How many double dippers like Val and Jerry Demings are out there ? If you have been in a political job for 40 years, that is the career of two people.

And when they get sick and can't work, they refuse to retire and stay on the payroll until they are carried out.
