The Capri Drive-in Theater in Branch County, Michigan, was packed on Friday evening, as moviegoers flocked in defiance of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s stay-at-home order in response to the Chinese coronavirus pandemic.
Tom Magocs, who co-owns The Capri with his wife Susan, said that he knows opening the theater comes with risk — like being shut down — but that staying closed also poses a massive finial risk.
The drive-in theater, according to a report by MLive Michigan, is the Magocs family’s only source of income, and it had garnered zero profit this year. That is, until it opened Friday night in defiance of governor Whitmer’s stay-at-home order.
Tennessee announced Friday that it would start reopening amusement parks and theaters, as well as lift capacity restrictions on restaurants and shops beginning next week.
Tennessee’s Economic Recovery Group noted that 89 out of 95 counties in the state could lift capacity restrictions on businesses, adding that the next reopening phase for larger noncontact attractions would start as soon as May 22, WSMV reported.
Attractions included in the next phase of reopening include large museums, auditoriums, race tracks, and recreational parks. But restrictions keeping gatherings to no more than ten people will remain in place for now.

As businesses start to reopen Monday in Miami-Dade County, indoor movie theaters are one place you won’t be able to go for a while. But an old-fashioned movie-going option is coming soon to North Miami: a drive-in theater outside Dezerland Park, the largest indoor theme park in the region which has been closed since mid-March due to COVID-19.
The city of North Miami issued a permit last week to let the park host drive-in movie nights every Friday through July 3. Michael Pizzi, an attorney for Dezerland, said he worked with city officials to make sure the site will be safe.

The Urbana Park District board has unanimously approved a plan for a charity harvest of geese at Crystal Lake to help bring the population from about 100 geese down to 10. “We want some geese to remain,” said Derek Liebert, the park district's superintendent of planning and operations. (Snip) Under the proposal, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Wildlife Division will collect the geese and take them to a facility to be killed, where the meat will then be donated to a food bank, according to The News-Gazette. The Chinese government may enforce several "countermeasures" against U.S. companies—including Apple—in retaliation for the Trump administration's plans to crack down on shipments of semiconductors to Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei from chipmakers worldwide. China’s commerce ministry says it will take “all necessary measures” in response to new U.S. restrictions on Chinese tech giant Huawei’s ability to use American technology, calling the measures an abuse of state power and a violation of market principles.
An unidentified spokesperson quoted Sunday in a statement on the ministry’s website said the regulations also threatened the security of the “global industrial and supply chain.”

When Chic Artique store owner Jenna Rummel was forced to close her furniture and home decor shop’s doors due to the health crisis in March, she called the experience “very humbling,” according to the Tennessean.
She also had to lay off two of her 14 employees and even with online orders, her sales dropped about 75 percent.
However, when the Goodlettsville Church congregation heard how small businesses like Rummel’s were hurting, they decided to do something to help.
The Pennsylvania state Supreme Court on Friday rejected a lawsuit that would force election officials to accept mail-in-ballots as long as they are received within a week after the primary or general elections while the coronavirus pandemic is in place.
The Senior Law Center, Disability Rights Pennsylvania, and other organizations filed the suit in late April, arguing that postal delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic could cause ballots not to be received at their destinations in time to count, the Associated Press reported.

Tropical Storm Arthur formed on Saturday night off the coast of Florida, making it the first named storm of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season. Now, forecasters say the storm has its sights set on eastern North Carolina. The Secret Service has detected a large-scale foreign attack on the U.S. unemployment system that is processing record numbers of jobless claims amid the pandemic, according to The New York Times.
In a Secret Service memo obtained by the Times, the agency described the attack as a well-organized Nigerian fraud ring that could lead to "potential losses in the hundreds of millions of dollars."
"We are actively running down every lead we are getting," Roy Dotson, a special agent who specializes in financial fraud at the Secret Service, said in an interview with investigators obtained by the Times.

A Minneapolis man has been charged in what authorities say was a random and unprovoked assault on KSTP-TV anchor Matt Belanger. Vennie Williams, 39, is charged with third-degree assault and harassment with intent to injure, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said Friday. The assault happened Tuesday at the Nicollet Mall light-rail platform in downtown Minneapolis. Belanger told police he was walking across the platform when Williams cocked his arm back and hurled an object at him, according to the criminal complaint. The object struck Belanger in the left eye and “caused a great deal of pain,” the complaint said.

“The police called me to inform us that they were asked by the mayor to put up the signs. A professor at Case Western Reserve University’s School of Medicine was arrested on Wednesday over his alleged financial ties to the Chinese government. The FBI alleges that professor Qing Wang was providing research funded with taxpayer money to the Chinese communist government. According to a report by Campus Reform, Professor Qing Wang was arrested in Shaker Heights, Ohio, on Wednesday on wire fraud charges. Wang allegedly failed to disclose his affiliations with several Chinese universities.

AUSTIN — The Texas Supreme Court late Friday overruled an appeals court’s order that had allowed election officials across the state to temporarily give mail ballots to people who are afraid of being infected with the coronavirus.
Attorney General Ken Paxton said the court accepted his argument that mail ballots should not be granted to voters who fear catching COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus. He said the Supreme Court’s order stops the distribution of mail ballots under those conditions until his appeal is heard.
