A U.S. judge has ordered Iran to pay $1.45 billion to the family of a former FBI agent believed to have been kidnapped by the Islamic Republic while on an unauthorized CIA mission to an Iranian island in 2007. The judgment this month comes after Robert Levinson’s family and the U.S. government now believe he died in the Iranian government’s custody, (snip). Tensions remain high between the U.S. and Iran amid President Donald Trump’s maximalist pressure campaign over Tehran’s nuclear program. And though the U.S. and Iran haven’t had diplomatic relations since the aftermath of the 1979 U.S. Embassy hostage crisis in Tehran, America stills holds billions of dollars

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Cal Cunningham canceled a planned town hall appearance as a second allegation against him was made public. According to WUNC’s Jeff Tiberii, Cunningham backed out of a previously-scheduled appearance to talk to voters on Monday afternoon. “I’m disappointed for the organizers who worked hard to put this together; also that we will not hear from Cunningham about sexually suggestive texts he sent to a woman (not his wife, nor mother of his children). (snip) Erin Brinkman, a lawyer who previously worked on a campaign for Cunningham, said a friend of hers had been in a relationship with Cunningham since 2012.

During the U.N. General Assembly opening debate last month, the Chinese Communist Party’s effort to assume greater control over international organizations was on full display. This year, “UNGA Week,” as the high-profile general debate of the assembly is called, took place primarily over video conference, and the in-person gatherings that make up the bread and butter of U.N. diplomacy prevented many important interactions. No matter for the Chinese delegation: In addition to general secretary Xi Jinping’s address to the Assembly, he participated in a side event(snip). Xi set the tone of the Chinese delegation’s message. (snip) its case for why the country it rules over is a leading defender of

New Delhi: Communist Party members will now be ineligible to immigrate to the US, according to new US Citizenship and Immigration Services policy guidance document. The latest policy guideline covers the Communist Party from "any foreign state, or of any political or geographical subdivision of any foreign state." The policy document clearly says, that the ground for inadmissibility in or affiliation with the Communist Party or any other totalitarian regime, is a part of the broader set of laws passed by US Congress to address threats to the safety and security of the United States. The Trump administration announced it will ban members of any foreign Communist party from immigrating to America. This includes the Chinese Communist Party. The new policy took effect on October 2. The Trump administration’s Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced an update to the USCIS Policy Manual stating, "to address inadmissibility based on membership in or affiliation with the Communist Party or any other totalitarian party." "Membership in or affiliation with the Communist Party or any other totalitarian party is inconsistent and incompatible with the Naturalization Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America, which includes pledging to “'support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States,'"

American citizens, U.S. nationals and lawful permanent residents who sponsor an immigrant visa for a family member to live permanently in the United States must sign a legal and enforceable contract with the federal government know as the Affidavit of Support, agreeing to use their financial resources to support the immigrant. Last year, President Donald Trump signed a memorandum that revives an old self-sufficiency immigration law that requires sponsors of immigrants to reimburse the U.S. government for any federal means-tested public benefits the sponsored immigrant receives. And now, the DHS(snip) aims to “hold immigrant sponsors accountable for failing to meet the obligations of contracts they sign with the federal government.”

As President Trump and Joe Biden debated on Tuesday evening in Cleveland, Steve Bannon was not huddled with other campaign advisers backstage, scrolling nervously through Twitter. Nor was he watching from a flatscreen in the White House. He doesn’t have a West Wing office anymore, having been dismissed from his job (he claims he resigned) as the president’s chief political strategist in the summer of 2017. His relationship with Trump since then has been one of rifts, reconciliations and, most recently, fraud charges(snip). It is difficult to imagine someone more attuned to the forces that coalesced in the strange brew called Trumpism. In 2016, Bannon was his campaign chief executive

North Carolina Democrat Cal Cunningham, who is running to unseat incumbent GOP Senator Thom Tillis, found himself involved in a sex scandal late on Friday night. The Charlotte News-Observer reported that Cunningham admitted to sending a series of sexual messages to a woman other than his wife; the National File first reported alleged texts between Cunningham and a California public relations strategist, Arlene Guzman Todd, that his campaign confirmed to be authentic. Cunningham ranks as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve and Todd is married to a veteran, so their plans to engage in an extramarital affair would violate the Uniform Code of Military Justice and risk court martial.

Before their shout-out on the national debate stage earlier this week, the Proud Boys had previously made a name for themselves with incendiary social media posts and street brawling at protests in cities like Portland and New York. The small, but loud, right-wing group also has roots in Florida, where they have made appearances at marches and rallies and gained notoriety for their connections to high-profile political figures. The Proud Boys were founded in 2016 by Gavin McInnes, a co-founder of Vice Media. They call themselves a “fraternity," “social club” and “men’s drinking club,” according to members.
In their words, their ideology revolves around being “Western chauvinists”

Mexico’s president on Friday said he suspected political interference behind a new migrant caravan in Central America, promising to keep his country out of the U.S. presidential race as the group splintered and some began turning back. More than 2,000 migrants, many wearing face masks against the coronavirus, barged past Guatemalan troops at the Honduras-Guatemala border on Thursday. Some said they were seeking to escape poverty aggravated by the pandemic.
President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, (snip)suggested that the caravan’s departure from Honduras had been timed to provoke.
“It is very weird, very strange,” Lopez Obrador told a news conference. “It’s a matter that I believe is linked to the U.S. election.”

President Trump’s campaign manager, Bill Stepien, tested positive for the coronavirus Friday evening, a campaign official told Fox News, hours after the president and first lady confirmed they too had contracted the virus. Stepien plans to quarantine until he recovers and work from home, the official said. A senior campaign official said Stepien was suffering from “mild flu-like symptoms,” Politico reported. Deputy campaign manager Justin Clark will oversee Trump's headquarters in Arlington, Va., while Stepien works remotely, Fox News has confirmed.

A judge on Thursday temporarily lifted a visa ban on a large number of work permits, undercutting a measure that the Trump administration says protects American jobs in a pandemic-wracked economy. U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White said his ruling applied to members of organizations that sued the administration — the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, National Association of Manufacturers, National Retail Federation, TechNet, a technology industry group, and Intrax Inc., which sponsors cultural exchanges.
White, ruling in Oakland, California, said his order didn’t extend beyond those groups. But he noted they are comprised of “(snip)a cross-section of economic sectors,” including Microsoft Corp. and Amazon.com Inc
