Four states are canceling their Republican primaries and caucuses, which spells very bad news for Republican Trump challengers, who already faced a near-impossible road anyway. South Carolina, Nevada, Arizona, and Kansas Republicans are expected to finalize plans to cancel their primaries this weekend, according to Politico.(Photos) “Trump and his allies and the Republican National Committee are doing whatever they can do to eliminate primaries in certain states and make it very difficult for primary challengers to get on the ballot in a number of states,” the controversial Joe Walsh, who recently announced his primary challenge to Trump, said in reaction to the cancellation news.

There is something magical and quietly hilarious about the ability of a fast-food chain peddling chicken to arouse deep outrage from the alienated few and yet record-setting patronage by the greater public. Chick-fil-A manages to do the seemingly impossible: it enjoys the largest per-store sales of any fast-food chain, despite being closed on Sundays. The CNN climate change extravaganza got bad ratings. Worse than that, there were no serious solutions proposed. How can you have a serious discussion about energy alternatives without discussing nuclear power? You can't, as we see here: The International Energy Agency has concluded that meeting the goal of keeping warming to no greater than 2 degrees Celsius would require doubling global nuclear energy generation capacity by 2050. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which is often cited as the leading authority by liberals, reached a similar conclusion.

A wave of House GOP retirements that accelerated during the August recess is creating fresh headaches for party leaders and suggesting Republicans see little chance of winning back the chamber in 2020. So far, 15 Republicans have announced this cycle they are retiring, resigning or running for other offices, including eight since the summer recess began in late July. A handful of those departing, like Rep. Will Hurd (R-Texas), would have faced tough reelections in competitive districts. But the vast majority occupy safe, conservative seats — a sign that these lawmakers may be fatigued from the chaotic

Iran has begun using arrays of advanced centrifuges to enrich uranium in violation of its 2015 nuclear deal, a spokesman said Saturday, warning that Europe has little time left to offer new terms to save the accord. The comments by Behrouz Kamalvandi of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran signal a further cut into the one year experts estimate Tehran would need to have a enough material for building a nuclear weapon if it chose to pursue one. Iran maintains its program is peaceful. Iran already has breached the stockpile and enrichment level limits set by the deal, while stressing it could quickly revert back to the terms of the accord if

The recent announcement by James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) that he would not seek re-election in 2020 sparked new worries among the GOP that retaking the House in 2020 might be nearly impossible. Although Sensenbrenner's district should be "safe" (as should about half of the more than a dozen seats in districts where Republicans are retiring), it never helps to lose an incumbent. That said, in 2020, the control of the House may be well near irrelevant. Over time, the House has had one major constitutional duty: the budget. (snip) Two rules apply here. When an environmentalist says he or she wants to “save the planet” be sure to ask: “For whom?” Because often it seems like they're not doing it for people at all. The anti-people nature of environmentalism is sometimes just a matter of minor inconvenience, as when environmentalist policies force upon us flickering light bulbs, weak showers and toilets, and front-loading washing machines. Sometimes the imposition is greater, resulting in higher energy costs, the destruction of industries, and the degradation of human health. For instance, the Economist recently lamented, “More poor people are eating meat around the world. That means they will live longer, healthier lives, but it is bad news for the environment.”

Pundits are all atwitter over Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s report on former FBI Director James Comey’s disgraceful conduct, which borders on criminality. While Comey is claiming vindication from the Department of Justice’s decision not to prosecute (at this point), the 84 pages of detailed descriptions of his actions as FBI director are simply devastating. Perhaps not so surprisingly, Comey’s conduct and treatment by the media offer striking parallels to those of John Dean, felonious counsel to President Nixon during the Watergate scandal. Both Comey and Dean were political lawyers. While holding presidential appointments to positions of extraordinary importance, each intentionally misled his president — and then lied about it.

Dozens of pages of e-mails and other documents obtained by The New Yorker reveal that, although Epstein was listed as “disqualified” in M.I.T.’s official donor database, the Media Lab continued to accept gifts from him, consulted him about the use of the funds, and, by marking his contributions as anonymous, avoided disclosing their full extent, both publicly and within the university.

Donald Trump wants people to think he’s a winner. So why does he act like a loser? Winners convey a sense of effortless superiority. They don’t have to work at it. You just know they’re above it all. If someone tries to criticize them, it’s beneath their dignity to worry about it. It’s just a little speck they brush off their shoulder. The Brits are good at that, Boris Johnson especially. We still don’t know how things will turn out there, but I expect his aplomb will carry him through. “There are no disasters,” he once joked. “Only opportunities. I can’t believe we’re still doing this in September 2019, nearly a year after her defeat by Brian Kemp, following numerous critiques of her claim, and months after Abrams herself stopped insisting that she won. “I have no empirical evidence that I would have achieved a higher number of votes” if everyone whom she believes should have been allowed to vote had done so, she told the NYT in April. She was questioning the basic fairness of the election, she stressed, not necessarily the outcome. So why are Democratic presidential candidates still not only questioning the outcome but insisting forthrightly that she won?
