Only in America: Someone

There´s a certain kind of courage that seems to happen particularly among Americans. We read it again now: in the horrific Capital Gazette newsroom shooting in Baltimore, writer Wendi Winters, aged 65, stunned her fellow co-workers and the gun-wielding man attempting to massacre the newsroom by standing up and charging him as if she were going after a rabid dog, saving half a dozen lives. It came at the cost of her own. According to the Baltimore Sun: Winters charged forward holding a trash can and recycling bin, said Cooley, a sales consultant. Winters shouted something like, "No! You stop that!" or

edit my post #1 to note "other" courageous flyers on Flight 93. Mr. Beamer was apparently a leader.

Great lady! I have been disappointed with the non-heroic approach taken toward shooters who set out to make a name for themselves. The heroes should be the only ones famous for these incidents and the shooters buried in infamy.

It does make one think of incidents of intervention by an American, certainly Flight 93, but also: the church slaughter in Texas, where a former NRA shooting instructor stopped the perpetrator. The train in France. A shooting at an apartment in Tennessee. The jihadists coming to kill Pamela Gellar in Dallas, stopped by police security.

Sometimes, photos shock the conscience. Such as this one, from a little town in northeast Venezuela called Cantaura, posted on Twitter by a young Venezuelan woman, Stephanie Nogales: Nogales, who posted it, says it is real. Which is why it´s so shocking. How could this exist? How could someone be so alone and forsaken and without food? That there is actually someone in our hemisphere who walks the earth in that emaciated condition, brought on by weeks and weeks of no food, a living skeleton, so utterly impoverished of flesh and clothes it´s impossible to tell if the person is a

So Donald Trump went to a NATO summit, insulted our allies, then made the absurd demand not just that they increase defense spending — which they should — but that they raise it to 4 percent of G.D.P., much higher than the bloated military spending in his own budget. He then claimed, falsely, to have won major concessions, and graciously declared that it is “presently unnecessary” to consider quitting the alliance. Was there anything our allies could have done that would have mollified him? The answer, surely, is no. For Trump, disrupting NATO doesn’t seem to be a means to an

Corporate Correctness: Starbucks won raves from environmentalists for its ban on straws. But while a strawless Starbucks won´t do anything to help the environment, it will discriminate against the disabled. Virtue signaling can be a tricky business. Under pressure from environmentalists, the coffee giant says that it will replace plastic straws with sippy-cup style lids at all of its stores by 2020. The company isn´t the first to do so, although it is the biggest. Hilton and Marriott hotels said they´re removing plastic straws at many of their hotels. American Airlines said it will get rid of plastic straws starting

Katherine Kealoha’s boyfriend

Hawaii County Fire Department Battalion Chief Jesse Michael Ebersole pleaded guilty in federal court this afternoon to conspiring with deputy prosecutor Katherine Kealoha to lie about their affair to a federal grand jury and has agreed to cooperate in the prosecution of Kealoha and her husband, retired Honolulu Police Chief Louis Kealoha. Ebersole, 49, faces a maximum five-year prison term for conspiracy. Because federal prosecutors are relying on his cooperation to prosecute the Kealohas, Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Beste asked U.S. District Chief Judge J. Michael Seabright to sentence Ebersole in April. The government claims that Katherine Kealoha spent more than $20,000

It is virtually an iron law that mature bureaucracies turn their focus from the ostensible mission to self-preservation and aggrandizement of the bureaucrats. One side benefit of President Trump´s attendance at the NATO Summit has been the opportunity to view the huge and lavish new headquarters building the organization proudly opened a couple of months ago. John Roberts of Fox News tweeted out his reaction to the vast atrium-like lobby that the new building sports: For its part, NATO has proudly published a series of photographs of the vast edifice, noting that it facilitates what all government bureaucracies do: consult with

Swamp regular Admiral James Stavridis has taken his best shot at addressing a phony issue: whether "democracy" is dying, killed off by President Trump, presumably, by offering reassuring words to the left and the Washington establishment about its durability in a cover essay in Time. Axios has the write-up and a photo of the cover. I suppose a lot of them are going to take grim satisfaction from it, given the level of hysteria on the left about President Trump´s very existence. But it rather too cutely frames a canard. The left, including Time magazine, seems all in for the idea that

Her mind wandering and her words not coming out right, House minority leader Nancy Pelosi, 78, is sounding more addled than ever, unable to express any clear line of thought. This is consequential if you are a Democrat, because she utterly refuses to step aside as leader of her party. In fact, she´s convinced everyone loves her. Look at this landscape of apparent dementia, based on her hour-long interview with Rolling Stone. Asked about her leadership and the pressure from Democrats for her step down, Pelosi replied: I think some of it is a little bit on the sexist side – although I wouldn´t normally say that. The indictment Friday of 12 Russian military officers for the election hacks against the DNC and Hillary Clinton’s campaign lends a surprising new detail to the 2016 election interference timeline: The Kremlin’s hackers apparently still maintained a foothold in the DNC’s network four months after the Democrats announced that they’d locked the intruders out. Until today, the story of the DNC hack ended promptly on June 14, 2016, when the Democrats went public with the intrusion in the pages of the Washington Post, and Crowdstrike, the security firm hired to respond to the breach, published a detailed technical account. Anyone who has ever been to a recycling plant is invariably surprised at how dirty and nasty America’s favorite green activity really is. Trucks dump the material on a long conveyor belt, where a few dozen people pick through by hand what is supposed to be recyclable material, but more and more often is just plain old dirty trash. The recyclables used to be worth something more than bragging rights about liberal moral superiority. Plastic bottles, newspapers, and cardboard, were just a few of the favorites you could ship to China by the ton and make a few bucks along the

Americans are encouraged to embrace diversity and be culturally sensitive to those who have flouted our laws and invaded our nation. Meanwhile, illegal aliens arriving in America have no such requirement. Instead, trespassing tribes relocate, and when they do, rather than assimilate, they transfer habits and activities indigenous to the countries from whence they migrated. Thus, Americans suffer from illnesses that are easily traceable to third-world bathroom habits (TWBH) and lack of hygiene in the developing world. It´s not news that illegals work in restaurants as food-handlers. These restaurant workers migrate from

The left-wing terrorist organization that calls itself Antifa is “freaking out” over a proposed law that would enhance penalties for anyone who “injures, oppresses, threatens, or intimidates any person” while wearing a disguise or mask. Throughout our country, and for a number of years now — and primarily because the establishment media fantasizes about, promotes, enflames and approves of the violence committed against the right (naturally, HuffPo opposes the unmasking law) — Antifa has been allowed to run rampant, committing countless acts of violence against everyday, peaceful supporters of President Donald Trump.
