Seriously, Juice Is Not Healthy
New York Times, by Erika R. Cheng*

Original Article

Posted By:PageTurner, 7/9/2018 3:54:30 PM

Obesity affects 40 percent of adults and 19 percent of children in the United States and accounts for more than $168 billion in health care spending each year. Sugary beverages are thought to be one of the major drivers of the obesity epidemic. These drinks (think soda and sports drinks) are the largest single source of added sugars for Americans and contribute, on average, 145 added calories a day to our diets. For these reasons, reducing sugary beverage consumption has been a significant focus of public health intervention. Most efforts have focused on sodas. But not juice. Juice, for some reason,

Juice (assuming it is actual juice, not containing additives) contains natural sugar, not that bad high-fructose corn syrup. Sugar is a carb like any other; exercise and burn them off. And oh yeah, brush your teeth occasionally to ward off cavities.

People these days think you should be able to quaff endless quantities of "healthy" foods. Our forebears drank the small 6 ounce portions of juice in their little glasses. They were much thinner, even while eating fatty meats and whole milk, because they actually got off of their rumps and did things.

Juices are high in calories. 6 ounces of OJ, a proper serving, is 85 calories. A serving of strawberries is 30 and contains a lot of healthy fiber and 100% of the daily recommended intake of vitamin C. Kids need to learn to eat a variety of fresh produce and drink juices in moderation. The authors are all Professors of Pediatrics. I doubt they have much of an affiliation with the Times.

When I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, I had the misguided belief that eating more fruit would be a healthy change to my eating habits. I found out otherwise. Want to spike my blood sugar? Just give me some berries. And it´s a shame, too, because I like fruit a whole lot more than I like vegetables. Why does everything I enjoy have to be bad for me?

Sugar is sugar. It is a carbohydrate.

There are as many calories and and as much sugar in a glass of orange juice as a can of Coke.

Ever see the little kids with the rotten or silver teeth? They were given apple juice in their bottles because it was so "healthy."

I too must stay away from most fruit, some berries are okay, because the blood sugar spike is too great.

I love fruit and enjoy the occasional orange or banana, I´ll usually pair them with a protein to mitigate the "damages."

Every morning I have a big glass of Florida Orange Juice (most pulp) style. I kinda chew my juice. Reminds me of the taste of home squeezed juice my mom would make with the Mix Master attachment. That was when the grocery store had oranges. Remember this was early 50´s transportation in reefer trucks wasn´t like today.
I don´t know about "sugar" in it but the Vitamin C in it does help me ward off what used to be my normal winter cold from Oct until May.

If you want to get to the Real Truth about food, calories and health, take the 1 million or so advice books by authorities of one kind or another and distill them to the basic, common elements. Either that or eat a balanced 15 to 18 hundred calories of a balanced diet, protein, vegtables, fiber, carbohydrates, and get a little exercise. You will live about the same number of years, excluding other known fctors like inheritance, and habits like smoking, driving too fast, or fooling around with other people´s spouses.

All sugar is not processed by the body in the same way. Fructose, and in particular high fructose corn syrup is metabolized differently than glucose, sucrose and lactose and is a direct contributor to fatty liver disease, insulin resistance and hypertension.

How many pieces of fruit does it take to make an 8-ounce glass of juice? Quite a few, actually, so the point about high sugar content is valid. Would anyone sit down and eat that many pieces of whole fruit in a sitting? Not likely.

A single serving of fruit juice is about 4 ounces. No harm in that if it’s occasional. But, like everything else labeled as “healthy,” people assume that more must be better.

I´m not diabetic (or even pre-diabetic) but have gotten more conscientious about avoiding foods that make your blood sugar soar. Juice and similar food items can be safely consumed in small, infrequent quantities. But no one should guzzle high sugar beverages on a daily basis. It will eventually catch up with you.

Swamp regular Admiral James Stavridis has taken his best shot at addressing a phony issue: whether "democracy" is dying, killed off by President Trump, presumably, by offering reassuring words to the left and the Washington establishment about its durability in a cover essay in Time.
