Actually, Socialism Does Work

John Sexton embeds entertaining video of Tucker Carlson and Cornel West, and offers a good explanation of why socialism always fails, from the perspective of the vast majority. He focuses on a good question that Tucker asked West: If democratic socialism works, why doesn’t Venezuela have toilet paper? The video is embedded at the end of this post. Of course West’s answers are lame–“real” socialism has never been tried, blah, blah, blah. You could infer from this that West is an idiot and, if he were arguing in good faith, that would be a fair assessment. But I think the truth is

Individual socialists can survive and thrive in a capitalist country. They never move to places like Venezuela, Cuba, or any other socialist paradise.

True socialism HAS been tried, but never was successful. The early church tried it. Paul had to admonish the Christians in Thessalonica that ´if a man will not work, neither shall he eat,´ because socialism rewards sloth and punishes (or at least does not reward) hard work. It didn´t work in Jamestown. It didn´t even work in Plymouth colony. Neither Jamestown nor Plymouth began to thrive until the experiment with ´from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs´ was ended. In Plymoth Colony, the young, able men resented having to do most of the work to feed other men´s wives and children. By the way, I very highly recommend the book ´Mayflower: A Story of Courage, Community and War´ by Nathaniel Philbrick. Fantastic book!

Thank you #3, I think it´s great that you bring up a truly American example that illustrates the fallacy so clearly in what couldn´t have been designed better to be an experiment had that been the intent.

And indeed, socialism is simply a mid 19th century label and spin on the age old totalitarianism seizure of power by few over the many, at the expense of the many. Feudalism on a mass scale. Everybody equal in their obligation to serve the master.

For years I have been saying what Hinderaker does here: that socialism is quite a good deal for those who have seized power, and remains so until their subjects have had quite enough and overthrow them, either at the ballot box, or bloodily. Remember the fate of Nicolae and Elena Ceausescu, who were in one hour tried, convicted, and summarily machine gunned. Fidel died in his bed. So did Chávez. Maduro will be fortunate not to get whacked.

Here in America socialism involves covetousness and thievery, with the promise of armed force in the not too distant future. Under Obama the Democrats already crossed the socialist Rubicon; now some are taking off their masks and embracing totalitarianism. The First, Second, Fourth, and Fifth amendments will be in danger if Obama´s acolytes ever take back power. The line between socialism and communism is blurring. Our political adversaries are becoming enemies; we know what they want: everything we´ve got.

In the context of this article, yes, it does work. What I have never understood is why the people gave up the right to create revolution against socialism. No guns, no way to protect themselves.

What I see happening in America is a large-scale repudiation of all Founding principles, and spiritual and moral underpinnings of the American miracle.

If it isn´t nipped in the ever-growing bud, we are in deep doo-doo.

I run into a fair amount of Socialists here in CA.
They all recognize that Socialism/Communism has two classes and everyone I have encountered believes that were the country to go that way that they personally would be in the upper class that is treated well as they are too smart to be relegated to the Proletariat. They are leaders, not workers.

"Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty."

The problem is and has always been, humans leaving God out for their lives and out of cultures and societies. Theocracies don´t work either, but as Benjamin Franklin said, "only a virtuous people are capable of freedom." We MUST BE SELF GOVERNING and we can only do that if we are moral and virtuous.

When humans leave out God, they also leave out God´s moral standards and values. What is left? Human opinion, and every human a few of them!

The Left wants to remove God from America so they can replace God... with themselves. But if humans can dictate morality based on opinion, then my opinion is just as valid as anyone else´s.

The article makes the case that socialism is nothing but a tool to legitimize the use of force by the left. Socialism, in every case, is a tyranny. Obama ruled by executive order. Venezuela suspended and changed their constitution to keep the left in power. China has made their leader, leader for life.

President Trump announced his appointment of D. C. Circuit Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court a few minutes ago. Trump was joined at the podium by Kavanaugh and his wife and two daughters. The event was, I think, superbly staged. Some observations: 1) President Trump’s introduction of Kavanaugh was beautifully conceived and delivered. Was there a teleprompter that I missed? Trump’s announcement seemed to be extemporaneous, and it was done flawlessly. Barack Obama was never able to talk off the cuff like this. 2) Trump emphasized Kavanaugh’s establishment credentials.
