DEH BALA, Afghanistan - U.S. and Afghan Special Forces are completing an operation to clear Islamic State fighters from a remote district in Nangarhar, the eastern province where they have their main stronghold in Afghanistan, officials said on Saturday. The operation in Deh Bala, on the border with Pakistan, began at the end of April and was largely complete in early June but final mine clearance operations are still under way, said Lt. Col. Josh Thiel, from the U.S. First Special Forces Group. “This was one of the main green zones that did two things. One, it provided money, finance, logistics to ISIS (Islamic State) and we’ve taken that

When can I build my vacation home there?
I have paid who knows how much in taxes - and borrowed federal debt - so I want to know when I can exercise my personal share of national interest in the US´ continued fight for such a good and strategic ally to me & mine.

So very sad for the brave soldiers, their families and relatives - who have risked life & limb, injuries and the ultimate sacrifice - for WHO KNOWS WHAT foreign policy to fight under the stars & stripes over there....

Memo: Trump leaves chaos

President Trump’s conduct during his trip to the United Kingdom has left even seasoned observers scratching their heads. Trump’s criticism of British Prime Minister Theresa May in an interview with The Sun newspaper has overshadowed the visit, to no discernible benefit to the president. Even Trump seemed to acknowledge the misstep when he admitted during a joint news conference with May on Friday that he had tried to apologize to her. “When I saw her this morning I said, ‘I want [to] apologize, because I said such good things about you.’ She said, ‘Don’t worry, it’s only the press,’ ” Trump said.

Pretty much every American news outlet is gleeful about the “giant Trump baby balloon,” as it is conventionally described, that supposedly is dominating the London landscape while Trump is in England. London’s Mayor, Sadiq Khan, gave activists permission to fly the blimp (as it is also referred to), which apparently was needed because it is so “giant.” Photos of the balloon/blimp do make it look large, like this one attributed to the Associated Press: [photo] But this morning, a colleague of mine who is from London got this photo that was taken by a friend. It puts the “giant baby balloon” into context. It isn’t exactly dominating the

Indictment Says Congressional Candidate

An unidentified 2016 congressional candidate reached out to Russian intelligence officers collectively posing as a Romanian hacker under the pseudonym Guccifer 2.0 for dirt on a political opponent, according to an indictment filed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller Friday. The indictment, which names twelve members of the Russian military intelligence unit known as the GRU, mentions an unnamed congressional candidate who, in August of 2016, asked Guccifer 2.0 “for stolen documents” related to his or her opponent. Guccifer 2.0, then claiming to be an individual Romanian hacker responsible for breaching the

The city of Danville, Virginia sits in the bellybutton of the Blue Ridge Mountains, a hat-toss over the North Carolina border and about 85 miles northwest of Raleigh. It’s low hill country and Danville straddles the frothy, chocolate-milk waters of the Dan River. Downtown, once a booming trade district, today is a decomposed industrial husk, a tidy cluster of silent rectangles ensnared by broad, ghostly thoroughfares built for a time in the not-so-distant past when people and goods poured in and out of town. Those days are gone, perhaps never to return. The story of Danville

FBI official Peter Strzok´s first public hearing tumbled into a rancorous and heated political fracas on Thursday, as Republicans clashed with Democrats as well as the former investigator over his anti-Trump texts -- and even threatened contempt for refusing to answer questions on the Russia probe. The contempt threat surfaced after House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., questioned "how many witnesses" Strzok interviewed before an August 2016 text from Strzok to former FBI lawyer Lisa Page stating "we´ll stop" then-candidate Trump from becoming president. Strzok said he was not able to answer the question based on instructions

There were some 2,053 of those children as of Wednesday, when President Trump signed his executive order ending family separation at the border. “The United States

The indictment Friday of 12 Russian military officers for the election hacks against the DNC and Hillary Clinton’s campaign lends a surprising new detail to the 2016 election interference timeline: The Kremlin’s hackers apparently still maintained a foothold in the DNC’s network four months after the Democrats announced that they’d locked the intruders out. Until today, the story of the DNC hack ended promptly on June 14, 2016, when the Democrats went public with the intrusion in the pages of the Washington Post, and Crowdstrike, the security firm hired to respond to the breach, published a detailed technical account. So Donald Trump went to a NATO summit, insulted our allies, then made the absurd demand not just that they increase defense spending — which they should — but that they raise it to 4 percent of G.D.P., much higher than the bloated military spending in his own budget. He then claimed, falsely, to have won major concessions, and graciously declared that it is “presently unnecessary” to consider quitting the alliance. Was there anything our allies could have done that would have mollified him? The answer, surely, is no. For Trump, disrupting NATO doesn’t seem to be a means to an
