‘I’d like to kill ‘em’: GOP
takes on Trump tariffs

Politico, by BURGESS EVERETT

Original Article

Republican senators are at their breaking point with Donald Trump’s protectionist trade blitz. Not a party meeting goes by these days where multiple Republicans don’t vent that the president isn’t listening to them — and plot how to fight back. “I’d like to kill ’em,” groused Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), a close Trump ally, referring to the administration’s expanding list of tariffs. The mounting frustration with the Republican president is a warning sign for the party amid what’s been a surprisingly favorable stretch. Trump appears, at least for now, to have weathered the internal GOP backlash against his family separation policy.

as a general principle tariffs are bad...however our "friends" have been imposing them on us for decades. Our weak kneed leaders just gave in for the sake of keeping peace. Time to stop...If they want to protect their economy why shouldn´t we act similarly. Trump realizes that we need to take the hard line now in order to restructure world trade equitably

Stupid people, doubling down on stupid. I am continuously amazed at how few people grasp the relatively simple thing he is doing.

We can never get rid of all the trade barriers against us by "playing nice", or asking "pretty please". Removing them will cause some substantial polititical pain to the leaders in other countries, so they do NOT want to do it. They do NOT want free trade, they want the US hamstrung.

As Trump reported from the G7 meeting. He said,"Let´s get rid of all our trade restrictions, tariffs and taxes." They room was silent, then someone finally said, "Let´s move on to another topic."

The trade rules and regulations in place now are extremely disadvantageous to the USA, it is NOT anything remotely like free trade. The only way to get those countries to get rid of their taxes, tariffs and restrictions, which are beneficial to them, and which will be quite unpopular at home for these governments to remove, is by making them feel enough pain (via tariffs) that the loss of those comfortable benefits will be LESS painful than keeping them.

Speak softly but carry a big stick. No stick, no negotiating power.

Once they agree to remove their taxes, restrictions and tariffs, we will remove ours. Trump´s tariffs are for negotiating leverage, and very necessary.

Trump is far, far smarter than 99% of the politicians - and, of course, isn´t really a politician.

If these birds listened to what Trump said at the G 7, tariffs would go away.. Trump said how about “ no tariffs and no government support of business”

The other “six” shuttered!

Now that is the definition of “fair trade!”

Every academic favors it in theory.. so let completion rip!

As for the Senate GOP, they are the worst team players you could have. I´m guessing they got picked last in every game they ever played, now we know why.

Yup, the Republican should listen to the above posters.
Tax increases on Americans are the best way to get other countries in line. All we need to do is raise taxes on ourselves until they can take it no longer.
Import restrictions won´t work, WE NEED TO PAY MORE TAXES!
After all, as has been pointed out above, other countries are taxing their people, and we should be just like them. Those countries are getting rich, and we are becoming poor because they pay more taxes.

So, silly Republicans, give up your antiquated anti-tax increase positions and embrace the massive tax increases that America needs to prosper.

In a tweet Sunday, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., a member and former chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, boiled down special counsel Robert Mueller´s new Russian election-meddling indictment to one basic lesson: "Key point in Special Counsel Mueller´s indictment: A dozen Russian military intelligence officials conducted the hacking of Democrats during the 2016 campaign." Other commentators, most with less knowledge than Feinstein, offered similar assessments. Regardless of what President Trump might say, they noted, the indictment showed very clearly that the Russians — Russian military intelligence, specifically — did it. What few mentioned was that there had been a similar assessment —

It is hard to think of a demarche quite like the blast President Trump just delivered in respect of Brexit. It came in the form of an interview with the London daily Sun, in which Mr. Trump lit into Prime Minister Theresa May for making a bollix of Britain’s exit from the European Union. He’d told her how to do it, he claimed, and she failed to take his advice. This hit the internet as Mr. Trump was finishing his dinner with Mrs. May, and scores of others, at Blenheim Palace.
