Study: SNAP Recipients
Eating Less Nutritious Foods

US News & World Report, by Alexa Lardieri

Original Article

People receiving government food assistance from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program are making less nutritious choices than people not receiving assistance, according to a new study. Published Friday in the journal JAMA Network, the study examined dietary patterns of people who participate in the SNAP program, people with incomes that qualify them for SNAP but do not to receive benefits and people whose income is too high to qualify for the program. It comes as the administration of President Donald Trump has proposed revamping the SNAP program and cutting costs dramatically by, among other things,

I suspect that poor choices predominate the lives of many food stamp recipients.

They had to do a study to come to this conclusion? All they really needed to do was go stand in the supermarket and look at what is in the carts of those who use tax payer largesse to purchase their food.

They just found out?! 35 years ago, my husband was a medical resident and we, and many other residents´ families, could only afford to live in the lower income housing near the hospital. And grocery shop there. And look at the carts filled with junk while the shoppers paid with food stamps. It solidified a lot of my conservative beliefs and I wish many guilty liberals would have to spend a year or two living in these areas and see how they feel after that. The reality is much different from their idealized notions. And I say this with compassion for those who truly need our help but disdain for those who are just living off of our dollars.

This charity should only cover staples. A short list unprocessed food items and nothing else.
Most would stop applying for the subsidy, yet no one would starve.

"A study showed.." Who needs to study? Just stand in line behind what I call the lazy, tattooed, fat ankle crowd and you´ll be educated. Hostess Twinkies, Mountain Dew, frozen pizza, frozen Mexican taco rolls, you name it. I think there should be government distribution stations handing out boxes of nutritional food that they pick up and not in grocery store lines like they do now.

That is the Government´s fault. They can make a list of products exempt from SNAP benefits, the same as States place taxes on specific items. It is darn easy to do; I pay a sales tax on soda, but not milk. Like I said, real easy, and the recipients would benefit their health, but I am not expecting it to happen, because it makes too much sense.

It would be very easy to restrict what can be purchased with Government Money. Better yet, go back to the beginnings of this program where "surplus" agricultural products like peanut butter, vegetables and fruits were distributed in cans labeled USDA. Actually, they had no label but the contents was printed on the metal of the can. Beans, rice and other staples is all they should be getting for free. It´s bad enough that their kids get their meals free at school and good hearted saps put together weekend "jetpacks" so the parents have no responsibility for feeding their kids. In some cities they have mobile feeding trailers that feed the kids who get free lunch during the summer.

As for the SNAP takers, the reason is they´re not bright enough to better themselves nor are they willing to bother learning how.
Yeah I´ve seen the trolley carts full of pop tarts and the food stamps or state credit card being swiped. I´ve also seen prime rib and lobster going out the door via food stamps, It is beef and fish , so that makes it legal.
Have a "give away" program and within two minutes somebody will figure how to "game the system" to their benefit.

Go back to the food warehouses, where people who need help can get what used to be known as "government surplus."

They´ll want to get off of assistance rather than get comfortable on it. And meanwhile they get good nutrician and taxpayers aren´t buying tickets to Disney or jewelry or anything else other than food.

Alas, there´s no will to do anything wise or right.

Some good ideas here. With the software and scanning technology it should be simple to have the card reject certain foods. Soda, of course. However, it´s been suggested and the soft drink companies have fought it. Some businesses will put the bottom line over the public good.

Then again, the obesity and poor health choices probably cut short the lives of a lot of welfare recipients thus saving some taxpayer money.

Being out in the community among low income people and the homeless, the amounts given out don´t make sense. A homeless/jobless person in this state gets $192. A senior gets nearly nothing while the "more kids and the more free stuff" group gets hundreds of dollars. They should not be allowed to buy wedding cakes with EBT cards.
I saw a grandmother and daughter in a non-grocery store counting pennies and finishing up the EBT card buying junk the grandkids wanted. What does grandma eat?
I have also been to Second Harvest sites where the food has expired and defrosted along the way. What I hate is the discrimination against white people, including the elderly, by Second Harvest.
Trust me, I would never give to a nonprofit again.
I worry the elderly will get the brunt of any changes in SNAP.

WASHINGTON — Rod J. Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, has asked federal prosecutors to help review the government documents of Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh, President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, according to a letter obtained by The New York Times on Wednesday. Mr. Rosenstein’s request was an unusual insertion of politics into federal law enforcement. While the Justice Department has helped work on previous Supreme Court nominations, department lawyers in Washington typically carry out that task, not prosecutors who pursue criminal investigations nationwide. But in an email sent this week to the nation’s 93 United States attorneys, Mr. Rosenstein asked each

NEW YORK — Starbucks is going strawless. The coffee company announced Monday that it will phase out plastic straws from all of its stores by 2020. The changes will help Starbucks eliminate more than 1 billion plastic straws per year, the company said. Plastic straws contribute to ocean pollution and pose a danger to marine life. Some governments have begun banning them. To eliminate straws, Starbucks is transitioning from the flat, plastic lids that require them, to ones that feature a raised lip you can drink from. The new designs have drawn comparisons to an adult “sippy cup.” (Snip) Frappuccino
