On the waterfront, there’s a longshoreman on the books who washes trucks. He gets paid $465,981 a year. To wash trucks. Fired when his bosses discovered he wasn’t actually showing up when he claimed to be working, he nevertheless regained his job—after an arbitrator concluded it was not unusual in the industry for employees to be paid “without being expected to work all the hours for which they are being paid.” The Port of New York Harbor is the busiest on the East Coast and the third largest in the nation. From the marine terminals in Port Newark and Port Elizabeth—where hulking gantry cranes that wait to load

Comments:
A remarkable litany of organized crime and corruption is described in this article, with the overhead naturally passed on to consumers. And as long as the politicians get a cut, all is well.

This is the kind of corruption that leads to incredible national security failures. Even during WWII with the safety of the nation and the world at stake, the Federal government had to make a deal with these mafia goons to keep the ports open. They actually had to make a deal directly with Lucky Luciano to get his "Blessing" to make the deal- effectively making the Federal Government a part of the Mafia. But, it kept the ports open- so, who cares? Right?

President Trump seemed to undercut House GOP leaders’ new immigration bill Friday, suggesting in an interview that he “certainly wouldn’t sign” it if it reached his desk. Mr. Trump, interviewed on the “Fox & Friends” morning program, was asked about the two bills GOP leaders will put up for votes next week. One is an enforcement-focused bill by Rep. Bob Goodlatte, while the other is a compromise overseen by the party leaders, which combines an amnesty for some illegal immigrants with major changes to enforcement and pathways for legal immigration. “I’m looking at both of them. Poppy cultivation in Afghanistan hit a record high last year, a US government watchdog has said, describing American-funded counternarcotics efforts in the war-torn country as a failure. Since the American-led invasion in late 2001, the US has spent about $8.6bn on counternarcotics efforts in Afghanistan, yet the country remains the world’s largest producer of opium. A terrorist planned to bomb a swingers’ club in France – but authorities were able to thwart his attack, they said Thursday. Cops found a handmade explosive device inside the unnamed man’s home last month and he admitted he wanted to use it at a sex club in the Loiret region north of Paris, a source close to the investigation told AFP. The 38-year-old, who was described as a radicalized convert to Islam, was indicted on May 17 on terrorism charges. This is the fifth terror plot prevented in France this year. On Saturday, two men, aged 21 and 22, were arrested east of Paris and are suspected of planning an attack in the name of ISIS

The city of Paris on Thursday debuted the 10-foot-tall panes of bulletproof glass that’ll partially surround the Eiffel Tower — as part of a plan to protect the landmark against terror attacks. Parisian authorities approved the $36 million plan to install a wall around the monument in February 2017. In all, 450 2.36-inch-thick clear panes will make up two walls to the north and south of the tower. The other two sides will be closed by wire mesh grids, meant to match the tower’s design style. Bollards to protect against vehicles will also surround the tourist attraction. The glass panes were designed to replace unsightly metal

California voters´ decision to reduce penalties for drug and property crimes in 2014 contributed to a jump in car burglaries, shoplifting and other theft, researchers reported. Larcenies increased about 9% by 2016, or about 135 more thefts per 100,000 residents than if tougher penalties had remained, according to results of a study by the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California released Tuesday. Thefts from motor vehicles accounted for about three-quarters of the increase. San Francisco alone recorded more than 30,000 auto burglaries last year, which authorities largely blamed on gangs.
