Trust in Self-Driving Cars is Wavering

A study conducted by AAA last month found that 73 percent of Americans don’t trust the current iteration of autonomous vehicle technology. That number is up from 63 percent as noted in late 2017. The study also found that: Only 20 percent of Americans said that they’d trust riding in a driverless vehicle. The largest decline in trust came from Millennials, with 64 percent saying that they wouldn’t ride in a driverless car. This compares with 49 percent who offered the same opinion in late 2017. Baby Boomers were still the most fearful of driverless cars, with 71 percent saying they

When the cars, or any vehicle, can "drive" itself, that means the roads have all been programmed with devices that will allow for this.
And, once you don´t have to actually drive the vehicle, the government can/will find a way to restrict who can, or will, be able to use those roads.

This may come in the form of a use-fee, or some other restriction, but the freedom to just come and go will not be something done as it is today, IMO.

Heck, they won´t even need Uber drivers, so even that "gig" job will be eliminated in the future, if this happens.

And, once the streets get thoroughly monitored and programmed as #1 says, Big Brother will be able to monitor your every move -- even on foot.

A bunch of starry eyed technology dilettantes who believe anything can be done have pushed this idea. Plus I suspect they are also vying for the huge government subsidies.
Let´s see it work in contained situations first instead of out on the open streets. Like a college or business campus.

It´s like they are saying let´s bite off more than we can chew instead of taking baby steps.

As an engineer who has written a good bit of complex software and used several very large, very complex engineering analysis and modeling software packages for multiple decades, I never had any illusions that I would EVER trust my soft, pink, irreplaceable body to a software "driver".

I have seen the endless levels and loops of unintended consequences, and logical traps where the "very heavily validated" software goes entirely off the rails. And that is just the errors - how about when the whole damned system just freezes?

No, it is a very bad idea.

Even the Airbus multibillion dollar aircraft program has scary as hell autopilot software which has caused a significant number of crashes. The error margins for aircraft are huge compared to cars, they fly MILES from any obstacle?except during landings, and then only have to hit a 300 ft wide, perfectly straight and level runway a couple of miles long, using very precise radio beams to align itself to a perfectly straight runway. Add curves, intruding side traffic flows, traffic signs, construction, motorcycles and pedestrians...what could possibly go wrong?

A LOT.

Sorry for that extraneous question mark, not sure how it happened. But, if a simple texting software package can insert random error characters like that... do you want software driving your car?

Reality does have the habit of sweeping fantasy away.
They want the technology to work, but wanting is not enough.
These autonomous vehicles are an Islamists wet dream come true due to the way the vehicles self update the huge database they use to make ´decisions´ and create an opening to insert erroneous data with devastating results that nobody could ever ferret out due to the sheer size of the database.

A relative was an airline pilot, now retired, once flew Airbus A300s. Her comment was that the key to that aircraft when cruising on autopilot (essentially ALWAYS done) was, when monitoring the aircraft, ´if you ever notice something odd....IMMEDIATELY hit the red button´ - which is the autopilot disconnect. She went on, ´the autopilot may be doing something that will kill you before you can undo it, like counteracting a runaway pitch trim with elevator, (and thereby masking the root problem), then shut down when it can no longer cope, leaving you with the whole tail at max trim angle, outside of elevator authority limits, and no time to run the trim down before you lose control´

I prefer to ride in Boeing aircraft, which has a fundamentally different approach to autopilots, seeing them as cockpit aids to the pilot, rather than replacements for the pilot.

Bitcoin is now nearly a third of its record high of nearly $20,000 reached last December. To investors worried bitcoin´s bursting bubble could spill over into equities, one market watcher says the crisis is contained. "There are things to be concerned about in terms of the stock market here with emerging markets and other issues, but I don´t think bitcoin is going to be one of them," Matt Maley, equity strategist at Miller Tabak, told CNBC´s "Trading Nation" on Wednesday. Maley understands the fear, though. The steep rise and sharp fall in bitcoin prices is reminiscent of the 1990s dot-com

First 3D Printed Carbon-Fiber Bike

According to Bicycling.com, the modern carbon-fiber bike is “a technological marvel” based on its superior strength over traditional metal bikes, at a fraction of the weight. So why isn’t everyone hopping on one of these top-notch bikes to pedal around town? Two reasons – the cost is insane and, say the experts at Bicycling.com, carbon-fiber can be a manufacturing nightmare. Typical problems mostly relate to quality control, in a production environment that requires lots of labor and precision, which is why the Silicon Valley startup Arevo intends to upend the process with 3D printing. The company has a

President Donald Trump recently confirmed that Secretary of State-designate Mike Pompeo secretly met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un over Easter weekend, increasing the chances that Trump and Kim may have substantive talks when they meet. If the administration stays on track, it is possible the talks may significantly reduce the threat of war on the Korean peninsula, strengthen America´s overall national security, and achieve a diplomatic feat that none of the previous 12 presidents were able to realize. There is justification for cautious optimism: For the first time ever, the leaders of North and South Korea will meet

The deadly van attack in Toronto is shining a spotlight on the controversial, often misogynistic world of "incels." The term incel is short for "involuntarily celibate," and the community that uses the label is typically dominated by men voicing frustration online about their lack of sexual relationships, sometimes blaming women for their failures with the opposite sex. Toronto police said Tuesday that Alek Minassian, the 25-year-old suspected of driving the van that plowed into pedestrians on a busy stretch of Yonge Street in Toronto´s north end Monday, killing 10 people, is alleged to have published "a cryptic post on

President Donald Trump is a man of low moral character. We know, “this just in.” Having led a very public life, nearly every American knows that Trump cheated on his first wife with his second and that he has generally been a philandering playboy. So in that sense it gets little more than a shrug when we hear that he had other affairs while married a third time. That was true of Stormy Daniels, and it’s true of Karen McDougal, who told CNN Thursday of her consensual 10-month affair with Trump from 2006 to 2007, before he was president.
