For Gaza’s suffering, blame Hamas
New York Post, by Jonathan Schanzer

Predictably, the recent unrest on the border separating Israel and the Gaza Strip has given way to a banal debate over the “desperation” of the people of Gaza. There can be no doubt that the people of Gaza are miserable. They have been living under Hamas rule since 2007. Israel has no choice but to treat the territory as hostile, given that Hamas has stated repeatedly and unequivocally that it seeks nothing less than the destruction of the state of Israel. And it has backed up its words with deeds, launching multiple rocket wars against the Jewish state, accentuated by attempted

"“This is a problem from hell,” one Israeli official told me in a moment of total candor. It appears that Hamas would like to keep it that way."

This has been the purpose of the Palestinians since the beginning, as a tool to prevent peace and create a sympathetic weapon to be used against Israel. This is also why the problem is intractable. The leaders in the Arab world don´t want it to be fixed.

It is the same as the dissatisfaction of Blacks in this Country being useful to liberals. The Black leadership is paid off to maintain the mess and resist functional solutions. We saw Black violence rise during BO´s time as president because he found it a useful tool. His words were inflaming situations that, for the most part, were NOT as he and his minions portrayed them. Then he could point to the unrest as the signs of racism.

The Case of the Clocks
National Review Online, by Reihan Salam    Original Article

Economists attempting to understand the relationship between new technology and productivity growth could do worse than looking to the early days of the humble public clock, as Lars Boerner, from the London School of Economics, and Battista Severgnini, from the Copenhagen Business School, have done in a paper for LSE’s Economic History Working Papers series. It might seem obvious that new high-tech inventions can be an economic boon — and in this case, the authors do find that early adopters of the clock saw high population growth, a proxy for premodern economic growth, of about 30 percentage points between

Small banks trump Wall Street

WASHINGTON - Congress on Tuesday rolled back some of the restraints imposed on banks after the 2007-2009 global financial crisis, but big players like Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N), Morgan Stanley (MS.N) and JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N), will not be breaking out the champagne. While Wall Street banks lobbied hard for a range of provisions that would have weakened the 2010 Dodd-Frank reform law and boosted their profits, they got trumped by their smaller rivals, according to lobbyists, Congressional staff, bankers and disclosure records. For example, the bill reduces federal oversight of banks between

With the 2018 midterms months away and the 2020 presidential election cycle approaching rapidly, Democrats are considering how to improve their poor showings in 2014 and 2016. The party has been debating — sometimes heatedly — how to do this. Which voters should they target? How should Democrats target them? But here’s what’s clear: White voters have been fleeing the Democratic Party, and that’s a big reason Democrats are looking to rebound from back-to-back losses. Whites have slowly but consistently moved away from the Democratic Party. These recent losses are on top of Democrats’ losses among Southern

The Obamas’ Netflix deal proves it’s

Conservatives aren’t the only ones with reasonable gripes about the news that Barack and Michelle Obama have signed a multiyear production deal with Netflix. Forget the increasing politicization of entertainment for a moment. Why are the taxpayers still laying out vast sums every year for pensions, health insurance, staff and office expenses for ex-presidents? The Former Presidents Act was passed in 1958 in response to the plight of Harry Truman. A man of modest means with no savings, the 33rd president thought putting himself on a corporate payroll, endorsing products or otherwise profiting from his time in the White House would

Philip Roth, the prolific, protean, and often blackly comic novelist who was a pre-eminent figure in 20th century literature, died on Tuesday night at a hospital in Manhattan. He was 85. The cause was congestive heart failure, said the writer Judith Thurman, a close friend. Mr. Roth had homes in Manhattan and Connecticut. In the course of a very long career, Mr. Roth took on many guises — mainly versions of himself — in the exploration of what it means to be an American, a Jew, a writer, a man. He was a champion of Eastern European novelists like Ivan

As the Democratic Party struggles to find its identity this primary season, it’s clear that Tuesday’s contests continued to show the internal struggle for the party’s future direction. The results speak volumes: progressives are overwhelmingly beating their more moderate primary opponents and uncertainty remains around the Democratic Party’s ability to retake the House in November The growing progressive insurgency presents serious questions for the Democratic Party as it continues its leftward movement. In particular, two gubernatorial primaries demonstrated the tension between progressives and moderate candidates who are

Ever since she lost the 2016 election, Hillary Clinton has repeatedly blamed her defeat on the FBI’s decision to reopen the probe into her email use after messages were found on the laptop of confidante Huma Abedin’s estranged husband. But now that laptop and those emails are back in the spotlight, this time causing problems for FBI leaders as part of a forthcoming inspector general report. The probe is expected to fault bureau officials for sitting on those emails in the first place. The finding underscores how the laptop continues to play a recurring part in the Clinton case saga, haunting everyone

Newly revealed e-mails show that former Federal Bureau Investigation (FBI) deputy director Andrew McCabe was keenly aware of CNN’s internal understanding of a secret briefing about the infamous Steele dossier, days before CNN published any stories on the matter. The e-mails, which were obtained by Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.), also reveal that top officials used coded language to refer to the salacious and unverified allegations made by Steele. Former FBI director James Comey briefed then-President-Elect Donald Trump on January 6, 2017, on at least one unproven allegation contained in Steele’s dossier, which was jointly funded by the Hillary Clinton campaign and

The event brought together various activists and experts on the subject who were joined by Van Jones of CNN and the president’s son-in-law and adviser, Jared Kushner. Kushner and Jones are pushing legislation aimed at requiring federal prisons to take preventative measures to help inmates avoid becoming repeat offenders. The approach would include job training programs, mental health counseling and drug treatment. Let’s hope the Trump administration can push Congress to take up the challenge. The Washington Post reports that European leaders are vexed with President Trump. Sorely vexed. Our European partners feel that Trump “delight[s] in smashing transatlantic bonds.” The situation is so dire that, according to Josef Janning of the European Council on Foreign Relations, the post-World War ties that provided the basis for Western strength and peace for 70-plus years are probably gone forever. The end of the Trump presidency won’t restore the alliance, Europeans fear. Rather, “the blend of unilateralism, nationalism, and protectionism Trump embodies may be the new American normal.” But what actual policies and

Can special counsel Robert Mueller require President Trump to testify before a grand jury? It would be unprecedented, and his effort to do so could lead to a major constitutional confrontation. The president could, of course, resist a grand jury subpoena by asserting his right under the Fifth Amendment not to be a witness against himself. However, for political reasons, he may not wish to do that. And he may not need to. Another off-ramp for the president, which he may choose not to take, is to remove the special counsel. Mueller is an appointee of the Department of Justice, part of

After about thirteen years of being a loyal customer of Netflix, the time has come for me to say goodbye. California is poised to become the first state in the nation to offer full health coverage to undocumented adults even as the Trump administration intensifies its crackdown by separating families at the border. (Snip) But at a time when Trump is already attempting to re-energize state Republican voters — he met with California conservatives at the White House last week to strategize against the state’s sanctuary policies — the initiative might be risky. For starters, it will be costly: The annual price tag to expand Medicaid benefits to poor adult immigrants without legal status is projected at $3 billion annually.
