Seattle Makes Amazon, Starbucks
Pay For Its Own Housing Blunders

Free Markets: Big businesses in Seattle face a substantial new tax to build more affordable housing. This is after the city thwarted private developers who were building affordable housing on their own dime. Only to government officials could this make any sense. This week, the city council unanimously passed a "head tax" of $275 per full-time worker on any company in the city that makes more than $20 million in gross revenues. The city says the $48 million in new taxes will go toward affordable housing and providing emergency services for the city´s swelling homeless population. Major employers like Amazon.com

Amazon and Starbucks may have objected but they probably won’t be affected much by this idiocy. Plus, they are so left wing that they probably privately think it’s a great idea.

Smaller businesses, not so much. Look for even more of them to leave, just like they did when Seattle started their $15 minimum wage.

#1 is right - leftists never learn - they just double down on stupid.

How on earth do other cities survive without a head tax? Will this become the new norm? The companies don´t pay the tax, it is siphoned from employees salaries and customers.

I tell my students in Into to Business that one beauty of capitalism is that you can always vote with your money.

If Starbucks and Amazon don´t like the tax, they can always take their business elsewhere.

In my opinion, this is the entire thing, in a nutshell:

FTA: ´´Don´t be surprised if, a few years from now, city officials hike the head tax on the promise that — this time — it will work.´´

It´s what the socialist libs do, NEVER give up on their crazy ideas, just wait a year or two, double down on their idiocy and go full steam ahead. Just like their ´´common sense´´ gun laws. Ultimate aim...Confiscation. NEVER trust a lib...now THAT´s common sense.

I read elsewhere that the tax will be especially hard on grocery stores since they have high gross revenues, quite a few employees, but are lucky to get 1% net income. Taxes levied on gross income are especially onerous since it is cold, hard cash out the door right off the top.

That´s enough to shut down many businesses, particularly as #12 points out in segments where margins are low and head counts tend to be high in relation to revenue.

Manufacturers will outsource labor and pull up stakes and more to Texas.

And they invariably go to some new tax form complicating the analysis to avoid people gaining a grasp on the total burden they pay.

If Amazon and Starbucks were not such leftist corporations they would move to conservative States where they would not have to be involved with socialist government initiatives that will cost them a lot of money and encourage more homeless people to move to Seattle. But they are not and will simply roll over and cough up as much money as those leftist State and local governments demand as the homeless population there continues to expand.

I´m with #3 and #16. The fact that both Amazon and Starbucks did not threaten to close down their facilities upon imposition of the tax says to me that they didn´t want to look bad for supporting it but secretly were in favor. Saving $48 million a year would pay for some nice new corporate offices elsewhere. Liberals will get into bed with almost anything.

Tax Cuts: When Republicans were putting together their tax reform plan last year, a chorus of critics warned that it would devastate state budgets. Like so many other claims, this turned out to be false. The New York Times reported in November, for example, that "state and local officials in high-tax states like New York, New Jersey and California are warning the tax plan will strain state budgets." A "news analysis" in the Washington Post said the tax law would make "it harder for states and cities to pay their bills." A widely cited National Education Association report claimed the GOP tax bill

President Obama´s Federal Communications Commission in 2015 imposed net neutrality, requiring internet service providers to treat all internet traffic the same. After candidates endorsed by the socialist party won nomination battles for state legislative seats in Pennsylvania and far-left progressives triumphed over moderates elsewhere, the answer seems to be yes. But if you did, you would be incredibly naive. The mainstream media went out of their way to portray the U.S. embassy move to Jerusalem as an incitement to violence by Palestinian "demonstrators."
