Hawaii´s Kilauea volcano could have a major devastating eruption at ´any time´, the US Geographical Survey has said. The volcano has been erupting for 10 days, and more than 2000 residents have already been evacuated. ´At any time, activity may become more explosive, increasing the intensity of ash production and producing ballistic projectiles near the vent,´ the USGS said on Tuesday afternoon. A recent lowering of the lava lake at the volcano´s Halemaumau crater ´has raised the potential for explosive eruptions´ at the volcano, the organisation said. Plumes of smoke are reaching up to 12,000 feet into the sky and ash is raining on

Referring to the picture of golfers playing on while the ash cloud billows, I thought, "what else can one do but to play golf?" I wonder if the Hawaiians look at volcanic eruptions in the same light as Californians view earthquakes? I experienced quite a few good shakers without too much concern.

If the volcano goes off, the pros are speculating 30 - 60 ft. tsunamis hitting the neighboring islands. They are holding back on emergency siren to avoid panic and not to repeat another false emergency evacuation siren. Speculation on major eruption, within the next several days. WOW!

That 6.9 quake a couple of weeks ago was not a fluke and not good news. With a recent lowering of the lava lake at Kilauea, creates an invitation for water to meet lava. These obviously don´t go good together. A potential Mt. St. Helens event in the making? Maybe. Planet Earth, what´s the plan?

Does the Daily Mail even bother using editors. They state lava temperatures reached 217 F. Good lord, a school child can see that that´s wrong, yet they stated it not once but twice. This is far from the first time I´ve seen really egregious errors in their articles. They need to slow down just a tad and take a look at what they´re posting.

#13, they probably left off a zero! Lava now over 1600f.
Praying for our fellow citizens in Hawaii.

I´ll never forget reading Plinius Secundus´s eyewitness account of the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. It was a heart-pounding account, even reading it in Latin!

There had been earthquakes and emissions from Vesuvius for several days or weeks prior to the cataclysmic eruption. After a while the people had become accunstomed to the rumblings; they lost a sense of caution.

Around 1600BC, the volcano which blew off half the island state of Santorini is believed to have contributed to the collapse of the Bronze Age.

Some scholars think that the destruction of Santorini became the stuff of the "myth" of Atlantis. Some excavations lead researchers to believe that at least some people were responsive to the the warnings and escaped to safety since no remains have been found under ash layers, unlike on Pompeii.

Seems to me that the heat is melting such a huge volume of rock and it´s forced to spread more widely, causing immense pressure. Cracks opening up in several places is a scary, as the lava has to go somewhere. So it seems the caldera is getting bigger and bigger.

Do we have any geologists here who can help us out with our speculations?
The Hawaiian islands are part a chain of volcanoes, Are any of the other islands active?

The one volcano "experts" seem most worried about is Yellowstone, known as a "super [massive] volcano". The entire Park at Yellowstone is in what was the caldera. Last eruption was something like 650,000+ years ago; its history is an eruption every 600,000 years. gulp

I think this article is clickbait. Hawaiian "shield volcano" eruptions involve extensive lava flows with relatively mild explosions. I don´t think the USGS believes that a Mount St Helens or Vesuvius type explosion is likely.

President Donald Trump contradicted U.S. intelligence agencies again on Wednesday, saying that Russia was not still targeting the United States, and accused his critics of being deranged. The day after he tried to quiet a political uproar over his failure to confront Russian President Vladimir Putin during their Helsinki summit for Moscow’s 2016 U.S. election meddling, Trump adopted his usual defiant posture and dismissed assessments of Russia from the intelligence community. “We’re doing very well, probably as well as anybody has ever done with Russia.
