In Cuba, the great American
tourism boom goes bust

Washington Post, by Anthony Faiola

Original Article

Posted By:Hazymac, 5/13/2018 8:19:17 PM

HAVANA - As U.S.-Cuba relations warmed in recent years, Matilde Portela, an Airbnb host, reveled in the flood of American tourists. An aspiring business executive at age 73, she quickly learned the art of niche marketing - adorning her home with two American flags and laying out back copies of the New Yorker magazine. "We had so many Americans coming that we didn’t know where to put them," Portela said. But Cuba’s Great American Tourism Boom has turned to bust. During the first three months of this year, 95,520 Americans came to Cuba - a 40 percent drop from the same period last

Comments:
Why would anyone with no Cuban relatives want to go to this communist dystopia? Other than native Cubans, most Western visitors to what JFK called "Cuber" are the Bernie Sanders types, the left fringe wackos. Hey, it´s probably like Scout Camp without the commissary.

I can´t imagine traveling to Cuba when there are dozens of countries that I would rather visit. Castro ran the casinos out of the place decades ago. What´s to do there other than take pictures of vintage American automobiles?

I´ve been there more than once. My hosts showed me a lot. It really is an experience. There is a learning curve. Great vacation, avoid obvious temptations. Premium (and I mean premium) cigars was the draw.

The old American cars are what we would, politely, call junk.

It used to be the exotic forbidden fruit. Now that it’s legal, people see it for the dumpy backwater that the Castros ruined.

The only reason for me to go would be the bass fishing. I read many years a go that there are several large fresh water lakes that have big bass . A two week trip during January would not be a bad trip.

When travel to Cuba was opened we had neighbors, a lesbian couple, who went to Cuba so they could be among the first Americans, before it got too touristy. Their “holiday” letter excitedly described the “fabulous” old cars, the “charm” of colonial architecture and the “warm and friendly” people who sold them trinkets. Their letter also included photos from their adventure.

The first photo featured a neighbor sitting on the hood of a battered and faded 50’s Chevy parked in front of crumbling buildings. The next photo was of a very old woman rolling cigars on the sidewalk, staring intently at her work and oblivious to the other neighbor cavorting next to her like she was statue at Disneyland. There was a photo of their “private art exhibit with local artists” (arranged by a very nice government official) that appeared to be set up outside on a grassy outlook. The last photo was of my two smiling neighbors on either side of the artist holding the primitive style picture they had just bought.

They noted in their letter how wonderful it felt to give U.S. dollars to these deserving people. I imagine they failed to notice the dead look in the artist’s eyes and expressionless face without a hint of a smile. They didn’t have a clue that the government official who arranges these “private showings” would be taking the dollars they paid the artist. The whole letter was so clueless, thoughtless and personally disgusting I threw it in the trash. I stopped sending them Christmas cards and threw away any “holiday” photo cards they sent. A few years ago they finally caught on and we basically don’t speak anymore. Do I need to say they were big Hillary! supporters?

Two thoughts:

(1) The initial surge in Cuba tourism was probably the result of pent-up demand, mainly by leftist Americans, to visit this country out of curiosity, political sympathy, like political views, etc. Now that this initial pent-up demand has been satisfied, tourism is probably at a longer-term steady-state level.

(2) There are many beautiful islands to visit in the Caribbean, as inexpensive as Cuba, with better infrastructure and amenities, and without the political baggage. Compared to these destinations, what is so attractive about Cuba, except for the political attractiveness to American leftists??

(3) As long as the current political situation exists in Cuba, I will NEVER EVER visit and spend money in this socialist workers´ "paradise"

Havana´s draw was the gambling, drugs and illicit delights, easily available in any number of the Caribbean islands now. Other than the cigars, everything that made Cuba appealing has moved elsewhere and the cost to restore Havana to it´s previous glory would be prohibitive. It´s easy to thrive when you´re the only game in town.

If there is any place that requires regime change, it is Cuba. If the US could get rid of the enitre govn´t system, Hilton, Wynn and hoteliers and casinos would invest and restore Cuba to its prior splendor. With the correct mixture of business and govn´t support, it could surpass South Beach.

Communism turns countries into swamps. Cuba is worth restoring.

In his new book, James Clapper, the former Director of National Intelligence, says “of course” Russian activity swung the election to Donald Trump. On Monday, Reuters/Ipsos announced that the Democratic Party´s strong lead on the generic ballot question, which had remained stable for most of 2018, had rapidly collapsed over the prior week.
