Jefferson, IA — The city of Jefferson has come up with a solution that involves shooting cats to control the population. There are multiple feral cat colonies in the central Iowa town, and the city claims shooting the animals is its only option. "Cats don´t belong outside," Jefferson City Councilman Matt Wetrich said. "There´s research showing hundreds of millions of birds in the U.S. alone." Wetrich is a naturalist by trade and knows what feral cats do to an ecosystem. Very wasteful. Trapped and shipped to China and North Korea, they could be a symbol of our increasing good relations.

FTA:"Cats don´t belong outside..."

Matt Wetrich, besides being a ´naturalist´ by trade and ´knowing´ what feral cats do to an ecosystem, is a pinhead.

You cannot blame the declining number of many wild birds only to cats. You have to also consider habitat loss, automobiles, the invasion of non native species like starlings and house sparrows, etc.

neuter and return to the wild ... like that will stop the fur balls from killing and eating the birds.
Just have a good aim and put ´em down quickly

Sad to have to do. I once did some support tech work that turned out to relate to gassing animals at a county "pound".

It was one of the worst days of my life, never would even consider doing it again.

I love pets, but the part where excess have to be destroyed is more than I can stand. I know, on one level, that it has to happen, but I sure hate it.

Hope they don´t mind all the rats and mice. Mice and rats eat corn, right? How much corn does Jefferson, Iowa have? There is a solution to control the cat population. It is called spay and neuter. They cannot reproduce.

Cats don´t belong outside? Really? Cats are natural hunters. The city councilman doesn´t know what he is doing. A lot of that going around in government.

“Cats don’t belong outside”?

Feral cats, according to our former humane society director, a smart and decent man, find their “passion pits” (his term) in the yards of those who have no dogs or cats.

He kindly loaned me a humane trap, which the HS subsequently picked up. Problem solved.

I have built barns and dairy buildings, silos, etc, on farms overrun with feral cats. They are exceptionally destructive. I feel sorry for them, because I love cats (mine especially), but these feral things are off the charts destructive and disruptive.

Wonder how many birds get clocked in the wind farms the greenies had to have? Shooting´s not a warm fuzzy way to control the wild population, but having watched 20+ starving & run over kitties the neighbor left to breed & dump in yard isn´t any nicer.

Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR). We have been involved in it for decades now. We have gone through three distinct colonies of cats (approx 10 cats) in almost 20 years.. trapped, sterilized, feed/water, and they eventually die off and get replaced and we start again. The community feral cat population in our area has drastically reduced and the health of the animals is so much better.

TNR works and is easy to do. Many times you can do it with the help of a local TNR group.. they will lend traps, teach you how to trap, help trap them, and even help with costs for fixing them.

Cats are territorial. They will guard their territory especially if the colony is stabilized by sterilization. Get the whole colony fixed and let them live out their natural lives which will probably be no more than 5-8 years. No more babies will be produced and little to no disease since sterilized cats are far less likely to fight and pass illness.

As for birds, I have seen far more domesticated pet house cats let out for their daily rounds kill birds than ferals who have a steady food source. My pet cats are indoors only. If we were still on the farm, and hopefully one day will be again, we will have sterilized barn cats for rodent control.

This is upsetting because I have cats. Why not euthanize them rather than shoot them? Why not spay and neuter and promote adoption?

Advocates in the field argue that the Earth needs to be treated with love. In addition to reducing harmful environmental practices, ecosexuals believe that humans should physically make love to the Earth. Here´s one for all the parents out there: Is it OK to let your child eat peanut butter at Target? A mother on a New York parenting blog wrote Monday that while shopping at the store, she gave her four-year-old daughter a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and "a woman stopped me to lecture me about peanut allergies." The child´s mother then asked other moms on UrbanBaby if it was now unacceptable to eat peanut butter in public. If your reaction is of course not, it´s a free country, you are definitely siding with the minority. The anti-peanut butter backlash was swift and brutal.

Only 66 percent of young millennials answered that they “always believe the world is round.” Science teachers across the U.S. will be shaking their heads after learning that nine

The stereotype of Democrats is that they want to take away everyone´s guns. Under former President Barack Obama, gun sales skyrocketed, especially after any mass shooting that received nationwide coverage, over the fear that he and the Democrats in Congress would be successful in restricting everyone´s access to firearms. It didn´t help that Obama at times talked about confiscation a la Australia. But his administration generally just took half-measure actions that made it seem like they were doing something on the federal level, but, in reality, they did nothing to prevent mass shootings and really only infringed on people´s rights.
