The making of Vladimir Putin
The Week, by Staff

Original Article

Where did Putin grow up? He was born in Leningrad, now St. Petersburg, in 1952. The city was still recovering from the German siege during World War II, in which Putin´s older brother died and his mother nearly starved to death. Post-siege Leningrad was, in the words of Russian journalist Masha Gessen, "a mean, hungry, impoverished place that bred mean, hungry, ferocious children." Putin grew up with two other families in a communal apartment, with a shared sink and stove and no hot water. Short and slight, he was always getting into fights with bigger and stronger children — a disadvantage

One of my former soviet colleagues was in several meetings in St. Pete where Putin was present as part of the St. Pete mayor´s staff.
When I asked what he thought about him, his comment was that Putin was just another bureaucrat in the meeting, nothing at all stood out about him.

Evil bureaucrat, perfectly willing to kill as many as needed to advance his goals. And very limited mind, one dimensional. Clever in an evil way, but not really very smart.

Economics of the post-manufacturing Russia are severely limiting. Their kleptocracy prevents the few entrepreneurs from reaching "critical mass" business-wise, so only those protected, existing businesses, owned by oligarchs can survive. The police step in and steal so much from small, under-capitalized, struggling businesses that they flatline, either failing altogether, or just bumping along, barely surviving, unable to grow and create jobs and wealth.

Sucks to be them, but again and again, Russia has chosen tyranny over freedom. They seem to really fear freedom.

Charges Sought in Eric Garner’s Death,
but Justice Officials Have Doubts
New York Times, by Matt Apuzzo    Original Article

WASHINGTON — Federal civil rights prosecutors have recommended charges against a New York police officer in the 2014 death of Eric Garner, three current and former officials said, but top Justice Department officials have expressed strong reservations about whether to move forward with a case they say may not be winnable. Mr. Garner died on a Staten Island street after the police officer, Daniel Pantaleo, used a chokehold to subdue him. Officers had confronted Mr. Garner, who was unarmed, over accusations of selling untaxed cigarettes. His final gasps of “I can’t breathe,” captured on a cellphone video, became a rallying cry

A pro-Trump political action committee has filed a complaint with the FEC alleging the Hillary Clinton campaign laundered $84 million in contributions from big-name donors, such as Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, filmmaker Steven Spielberg, and designer Calvin Klein. The complaint outlines a money laundering scheme that violated multiple campaign finance laws, specifically laws related to limits on contributions by independent donors. As of this week, the complaint has escalated with a lawsuit urging the FEC to take action on the complaint which appears to have been largely ignored by the FEC since being filed in December of 2017. In her weekly Wall Street Journal column Kim Strassel formulates 11 “basic questions” for Comey to answer some time on his book tour promoting himself as our tutor in ethical leadership. They are all good questions. Here are six of them: • You admit the Christopher Steele dossier was still “unverified” when the FBI used it as the basis of a surveillance warrant against Carter Page. Please explain. Also explain the decision to withhold from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court that the dossier was financed by the Hillary Clinton campaign. • You say you knew the dossier was funded by a “Democrat-aligned”

All of the media need to finally understand one thing: Facebook and its founder Mark Zuckerberg don’t owe them anything. Both Zuckerberg and his data-mining company drew scrutiny in recent weeks after it was reported that it had sold information on users to Cambridge Analytica, which in turn used it to aid the Trump campaign. It was an apparent shock to some that when Facebook asks, “Would you like to share your location?” it’s not so that they can send the user a bag of money. New York Times technology writer Brian Chen wrote last week that he viewed the information Facebook

James Comey’s new book has occasioned a good deal of discussion about truth and lies and integrity. Although “A Higher Loyalty” is a brisk read with much to recommend it, the central message about how and why truth matters is one that I find troubling. There’s a worrisome bit, for instance, where Comey talks about his prosecution of Martha Stewart on charges surrounding a stock trade, including making false statements to investigators: “The Stewart experience reminded me that the justice system is an honor system. We really can’t always tell when people are lying or hiding documents, so when we

For the first time in the history of the republic, it appears increasingly likely that a majority of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will vote against the president´s nominee for secretary of state. If this happens, it would be a black mark not on Mike Pompeo´s record, but on the reputation of this once-storied committee. There are no instances of a secretary of state nominee ever receiving an unfavorable committee vote since such votes were first publicly recorded in 1925 (before that, the committee voted in closed session). Democrat John Kerry was approved in a unanimous voice vote, including from Sen.

It was telling that as Tax Day arrived this week, the media’s focus was riveted not on the massive tax overhaul that President Trump recently signed into law, but on James Comey, Stormy Daniels, and Michael Cohen. In their own ways, these three players in the Trump drama symbolize the ethical storms and moral challenges constantly buffeting the president. Those tempests have imposed an unmistakable political cost on Trump—whose approval rating remains far below what might be expected in an economy this strong—and they represent an inescapable threat to Republicans in the November midterm elections. What’s ironic is that these

The Southern Poverty Law Center has removed the “Field Guide to Anti-Muslim Extremists” from their website after attorneys for Maajid Nawaz, a practicing Muslim and prominent Islamic reformer, threatened legal action over his inclusion on the list. The report, which had been active on the SPLC’s website since it was published in December 2016, was intended to serve as a resource for journalists to identify promoters of hateful propaganda; but it included a number of liberal reformers such as Nawaz, a former Islamic extremist who has since dedicated his life to combating the hateful ideology. “A shocking number of these

Mike Pompeo wants to be secretary of state. But the deck is stacked against him. One by one, Democrats on the Senate Foreign Relations committee have announced their opposition to his nomination. This includes the two who voted to confirm him as CIA director, Virginia senator Tim Kaine and New Hampshire senator Jeanne Shaheen. All eyes are on the remaining 13 Democratic senators who helped confirm Pompeo in January 2017. And several have already come out in opposition, including California senator Dianne Feinstein, who is up for re-election and facing a progressive challenger. “The Secretary of State is a very different role

When Mick Mulvaney, President Trump’s acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, appeared before Congress last week, he managed to illustrate the absurdity of the agency that he heads. In questioning him, several Democrats disputed that Mulvaney even is the director, claiming that an Obama-era appointee retains authority—and they may actually have a point. This squabbling may seem like government-incompetence-as-usual, but in fact, the CFPB is working as intended—shielding elected officials from the opposition of lobbyists who don’t want sensible financial rules and from the wrath of consumers who, a decade after the financial crisis, remain ill-served by an

Attorney General Jeff Sessions recently told the White House he might have to leave his job if President Trump fired his deputy, Rod J. Rosenstein, who oversees the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, according to people familiar with the exchange. Sessions made his position known in a phone call to White House counsel Donald McGahn last weekend, as Trump’s fury at Rosenstein peaked after the deputy attorney general approved the FBI’s raid April 9 on the president’s personal attorney Michael Cohen. Sessions’s message to the White House, which has not previously been reported, underscores the political firestorm

First-term Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) is emerging as a Democratic presidential contender in 2020. However, according to Politico, her own voters in California do not really know much about her. In an article titled “Kamala Harris’ rapid rise confounds California,” Politico’s David Siders writes: Kamala Harris has been called “the female Barack Obama.” She’s built a national following with her outspoken criticism of Donald Trump and prolific fundraising for fellow Democrats. But the California senator’s rapid rise — she’s just 15 months into her first term — has created an awkward issue: Even as progressives tout her as one of
