Pictured: Dispatcher who blamed frozen

The 911 dispatcher placed on leave after failing to help save an Ohio teen crushed to death in his van has been pictured for the first time as it emerges she was previously commended for her stellar work. Amber Smith was identified as the call taker who allegedly flubbed the desperate call from 16-year-old Kyle Plush, as he was being crushed to death in his minivan. (Snip) On Tuesday, Plush used Siri on his iPhone to call 911 from his crushed position, however the call dropped once, and the second time he called back it was dispatcher Smith who answered.

Comments:
Need help in an emergency? Call 9-1-1. In this case, Windows locked the dispatcher´s screen, and the police half-heartedly searched the wrong parking lot because they figured it was a crank call.

This is so unbelievably heartbreaking. The dispatcher did not communicate the information to the police. The young man called twice. He gave very specific information. And it was still messed up.

First of all, let me express my condolences for the the family and friends of this young man. This was a tragic accident. My prayers are with you.

As a volunteer firefighter for over 31 years, I know that the 911 dispatchers in many venues are overworked, under a great deal of stress, and still manage to do incredible work under the most difficult of circumstances. (Walk a mile in their shoes...?) Please wait for the facts of this situation to come out before plastering Ms. Smith with blame for his death. There are many factors in play here, and we don´t know them all. And my prayers are with Ms. Smith as well as I know, first hand, what the results of a "bad call" can have on the people involved. Peace be with them all...

#2 is absolutely correct. Time after time, people in chat venues make claims with no knowledge of what actually happened.

I suspect many lawsuits arising from this tragic accident.

FTA, it´s pretty clear to me what happened: "At some point, the boy tried calling again, and this time appeared more desperate, because there were sounds of loud banging and heavy breathing. ´This is not a joke,´ he said. ´I am trapped inside a gold Honda Odyssey van in the parking lot of Seven Hills. ... Send officers immediately. I´m almost dead.´ The lot is searched again, but still no one is found. It later was revealed that the boy was trapped in a car in the school´s overflow parking lot, across the street from the main parking lot, which the deputies did not search."

I work foolishly long hours (including much unpaid overtime) and bear relentless on-the-job stress, yet I can´t make mistakes even remotely like the one these people made, all down the line. And a young man is dead; truly tragic.

We lived in Cincinnati before retirement and both of our children graduated from Seven Hills Schools (a small private school). The parking lots are directly across the street from each other ... easily visible from one side of the street to the other ... and the entire area is considered the parking facility. There is no "main" parking area with an "auxiliary " area. I can´t believe the responding officers weren´t smart enough to check both areas.

There are no winners here. Smith will be haunted by this for the rest of her life. No one needs to blame her, she has enough already.

Condolences to the family. So horrible. There is not enough money from any lawsuit to bring their son back.

#8, there is something termed "positional asphyxiation," where the body is trapped in a position that limits or prevents breathing. It appears this may be the case here.

I am reminded of a somewhat recent story of a college student who, as a lark, fit herself into a dumbwaiter at work and trapped herself. They found her the next morning.

It’s hard to believe that a young-adult book about a male teenager on an exciting adventure might be considered controversial.
