Threats to Power Grid Demand
More Vigorous Response

Real Clear Defense, by J. Michael Barrett

Security, industry and government officials are increasingly warning that the U.S. electrical power grid faces potential widespread failure from broad-based, systemic threats such as a cyberattack or massive electromagnetic pulse (EMP) disturbance. Indeed, nations as varied as North Korea, Iran, China and Russia have hacked into the U.S power grid. As for EMPs, a senior Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official recently testified before Congress, “EMP can cause widespread disruption and serious damage to electronic devices and networks, including those upon which many critical infrastructures rely.” These so-called “grid-down” risks have yet to be met with the urgency they demand,

Actually, the DOE has been working hard to make the problem worse by replacing a robust diversified grid system with a fragile more centrally controlled one.
The ONLY reason to connect the grid to the internet is so that government officials can surf porn while doing ´inspections´.

Local reporter interviewed a representative of our nearby nuclear power plant. He informed her, and us, that there was no connection at all between the internet and the power station control systems. NO CONNECTION AT ALL.

He (rightfully) said that the claims of using the internet to shut down the power plant were just unfounded fears.

Perhaps some other power stations are connected, but I wonder how much of this is just std BS.

As to EMP, significant changes have been made, but apparently the writer didn´t dig deep enough to discover them. Lazy reporter.

This is a massive scam being sold with apparent approval of Trump--since his DHS personnel are selling it like a permanent global crisis that alleged US expertise and tax dollars must lead. The fact is US incompetence at NSA has caused existing cyber problems. Via theft or leak, elite NSA hacking tools were placed on the internet and are now in the hands of every hacker in the world. WannaCry global attacks last year on NHS, Fed Ex, Russia, Taiwan, many others including US targets used NSA hacking tools. Every country has them. This ´global´ hacking crisis is exactly like the global warming scam ($500M/day). In this case the ´problem´ is avoidable--US gov. simply stops using the internet. They never should´ve started using it because it´s never been safe and never will be. Like AGW, they say cyber security is a multi faceted global war that will last forever, can never be solved, but in any case needs US taxpayer cash-not just to US 50 states but to all countries in the world.

The Trump administration, in a major reversal of Obama administration policy, is seeking to shutter every Iranian nuclear enrichment site, including its heavy water reactors, which could provide Iran with a second, plutonium-based pathway to a nuclear weapon, according to U.S. officials and others familiar with the policy shift. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in his first major policy address, called on Iran to shutdown its heavy water nuclear power plants, which were allowed by the Obama administration under the landmark nuclear agreement and laid the groundwork for Tehran and Russia to ink multi-billion dollar deals to build new nuclear

The open primary for the California governor’s race is coming up in a couple of weeks and there’s a packed field of no less than 27 candidates on the ballot. At the moment, the two top contenders appear to be the former mayors of Los Angeles and San Francisco, Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and state Assembly Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa. There’s one Republican within spitting distance of making it into the general election, John Cox, but he remains a long-shot at best. These folks are all out on the campaign trail and the Democrats are all competing to demonstrate which one of them hates President Trump the most and will be the

Since 2011, first in Syria and then in Yemen, proxy forces of Iran and Saudi Arabia have been in constant, brutal competition. Both sides seem to have concluded that a direct war isn’t in their interest, with neither having ever directly attacked the other. But there has always been a risk of escalation — and that risk will heighten dramatically on Tuesday if President Donald Trump withdraws from the Iran nuclear deal, as seems likely. That could lead to an increase in military provocations by Iran in the region, and embolden any Saudi response. It’s far easier to assess the likelihood of direct conflict between Tehran and Riyadh,

The reform movement fueled by political centrists is getting stronger all over the country, but it needs a heavyweight 2020 Independent presidential candidate to gain national traction and big-time financial backing. Ohio Gov. John Kasich ought to take up that challenge. He can’t get the nomination of his own party. Although he’s a lifelong Republican who won statewide in a key battleground state the GOP needs to win the presidency, he’s become much too moderate, not to mention high-principled and independent, for the party.

Mike Pompeo is qualified to be secretary of state. There is no doubt about that. He is competent — as director of the CIA, he has managed a complex organization deftly, winning the respect of intelligence professionals otherwise not favorably inclined to President Trump. He is experienced — in an administration with more than its share of neophytes, he has served in Washington, initially as a congressman, since 2011. He is highly credentialed — he graduated top of his class at West Point and went to Harvard Law School, where he edited the Harvard Law Review.
