Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith, the state’s commissioner of agriculture and commerce, is expected to be named by Gov. Phil Bryant during a news conference today in Brookhaven as the interim replacement for Thad Cochran in the United States Senate. Hyde-Smith, 58 of Brookhaven, would be the first woman to serve the state as a member of the U.S. House or Senate. As the interim senator, Hyde-Smith is expected to run in the November special election that will be held to elect a replacement to complete Cochran’s current term that ends in January 2021. I´m too old to accept hyphenated names.
I don´t like it when British men do it. I don´t like it when Puerto Rican people do it.
And I don´t like it when women do it.
I am just a grouchy old man, I guess.

It should be Chris McDaniel, an actual Conservative. I suspect he will be elected to fill this seat in 2020. He should have been elected back in 2014...

Two warning signs.

Former Dem and a hyphenated last name. Both are often signs of trouble.

I will wait and see, but without more info, I worry that we are getting a Hellary supporter here.

Major names on Wall Street and in the Republican establishment are buying into Mitt Romney´s run for Senate, particularly as Republican lawmakers are looking to him as a future leader within a congressional caucus that is struggling to find its identity. According to first-quarter filings, Romney has been quietly receiving the financial backing of some of the most powerful names and donors in Republican circles, such as former Goldman Sachs CEO and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson. The early contributions are not necessarily big, but they indicate a coordinated effort to push the former Massachusetts governor and presidential

There is a kind of modernity to the 19th-century story of New York archbishop John Hughes, in terms of three issues we still have cause to ponder in the United States: namely, the nature of community, the utility of any form of identity politics, and our national embrace of — and, in some quarters now, new skepticism about — multiple cultural identities. Hughes gave thought to the forces that were necessary to forge a tight-knit community, and his answers, if dangerous in our own day, seemed more reasonable to him. He did not share Bishop Benedict Joseph Fenwick’s gentleness when

Tim Draper is a rich man, but he understands he doesn´t know it all. His first attempt to divide California into six states made very little sense. So he went out and got some people who are experts on the subject. The result, Cal 3, is a political masterpiece. This could work. When California was admitted to the union in 1850 it had only 92,000 people, most of them scrambling for gold in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. That´s why California´s county lines are so screwy. Los Angeles County now has 10,000,000 people. Alpine County has 1,000. Cal 3 divides the

In today´s public dialogue, there´s a lot of talk back and forth over the transgender issue. And why not? Transgenderism has been made into a cause celebre by the cultural elite. Many, myself included, view this as part of the ongoing effort by the Left to separate America from God and tradition. For that reason, it is worthwhile to delve a little deeper into the issue than what is normally provided by what is claimed by transgender people themselves.

Two twists emerged Friday in the leadership race to replace retiring Speaker Paul D. Ryan. House Freedom Caucus founding member Jim Jordan said he’d consider a run while Ryan endorsed Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy. “There is no speaker’s race right now,” Jordan told reporters. “Paul Ryan is the speaker. If and when there is, I’ve been urged by colleagues to consider that and I am definitely open to that. Right now though the focus has got to be on the next six months, us keeping the majority.” Jordan is a tactical politician. His move is not about actually believing he could win

What would Mr. Dooley make of the latest alarum from the New York Times about how America’s state courts are under “partisan attack”? Mr. Dooley is the fictional bartender who famously proclaimed that “the Supreme Court follows the election returns.” The Times has been set off by what is happening in Wisconsin, Kansas, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. Those are among the states where voters are so upset with judicial decisions that they’re taking to politics to curb the courts. Across the country, the Times warns in an editorial, “state judges are under increasing fire from lawmakers and outside groups angered by their rulings, their power, their tenure or simply their independence.”

The Republican National Committee has committed $250 million to a midterm election strategy that has one goal above all else: Preserve the party´s House majority for the rest of President Donald Trump´s first term.Facing the prospect of a blue wave this fall, the White House´s political arm is devoting unprecedented resources to building an army of paid staff and trained volunteers across more than two dozen states. The RNC is taking the fight to Senate Democrats in Republican-leaning states, but much of the national GOP´s resources are focused on protecting Republican-held House seats in states including Florida, California and New

Long before he became speaker of the House of Representatives, Paul Ryan had a simple dream: to play Jack Kemp to a future Republican president’s Ronald Reagan. In a cruel twist of fate, Ryan instead had to reprise Kemp’s role with President Trump. Kemp, Ryan’s idol, helped craft the tax cut that eventually became the centerpiece of Reagan’s supply-side economic agenda. From his early years representing a Wisconsin swing district in Congress, Ryan was unveiling sweeping budget and reform plans he hoped would someday become law.
