After months of back and forth, the Weinstein Company has officially filed for bankruptcy. The disgraced company, founded by Harvey Weinstein and brother Bob, was supposed to be sold to Maria Contreras-Sweet and an investor group before the deal fell apart several times. Weinstein Co. will be sold to Dallas-based Lantern Asset Management for between $300 million and $320 million, according to Variety. “The company hopes that this orderly sale process under the supervision of the Bankruptcy Court will allow it to maximize the value of the Company’s assets for the benefit of its creditors and other stakeholders,” the company

The Social Benefits of Fossil
Fuels Far Outweigh the Costs

As several cities continue their suit against oil companies, The People of the State of California v. BP, Judge William Alsup has boiled the case down to its pivotal question. In March he ordered the legal counsels of both parties to help him weigh “the large benefits that have flowed from the use of fossil fuels” against the possibility that such fuels may be causing global warming. We sent the judge, and posted online, a 24-page document that answers his question. The benefits of oil, coal and gas are rarely acknowledged by environmental activists, who seek to regulate and tax these

The crazy reason the FBI didn´t search

While the FBI was investigating Hillary Clinton´s secret server where she kept official emails out of the view of the authorities until her lawyers could scrub them, for some reason, agents never searched the Blackberries or other email devices belonging to her inner circle at the State Department. Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz and his team received a crazy response when they asked FBI agents on the Hillary Clinton email investigation why not. The agents´ primary excuse was to point to "the culture of mishandling classified information at the State Department which made the quantity of potential sources of evidence

Mount Everest, the high-altitude rubbish dump

Decades of commercial mountaineering have turned Mount Everest into the world´s highest rubbish dump as an increasing number of big-spending climbers pay little attention to the ugly footprint they leave behind. Fluorescent tents, discarded climbing equipment, empty gas canisters and even human excrement litter the well-trodden route to the summit of the 8,848-metre (29,029-foot) peak. "It is disgusting, an eyesore," Pemba Dorje Sherpa, who has summited Everest 18 times, told AFP. "The mountain is carrying tonnes of waste." As the number of climbers on the mountain has soared -- at least 600 people have scaled the world´s highest peak so far this year

How the Queen and Meghan Markle

It was an extraordinary sight—as the queen and Meghan Markle sat on chairs watching a performance by a group of schoolchildren on Thursday, Meghan leant over and whispered something in her grandmother-in-law’s ear, and the monarch chuckled. Her Majesty then made a canoeing action, in friendly imitation of the kids’ performance, and laughed again. The queen has a fairly simple policy on public emotion which is to not show it, ever, and this is not because she is some unthinking adherent to the principle of the stiff upper lip, but just because it makes life simpler, and avoids people being upset

Liza Minnelli quietly selling

Liza Minnelli is lucky no one bought her Andy Warhol collection two years ago — she’ll end up much richer by selling off the paintings one by one. A source in Switzerland reports one of Minnelli’s 22 Warhols — a silk-screen of her mother Judy Garland — was just sold by Larry Gagosian for $7 million to an unnamed buyer. It was one of three portraits of Judy in Liza’s collection, which also includes four portraits of herself and three of her father Hollywood director Vincente Minnelli. I reported two years ago that Liza was asking $40 million for the entire collection, trying

An Internet search for “Father’s Day 2018” brings up a top hit: “20 Last-Minute Father’s Day Gifts That Are Amazon Prime-Eligible.” Now, like most dads, I’m not one to complain about receiving gifts (especially when they involve a good weekend of fishing), but something is wrong when popular culture understands the obligations of Father’s Day as nothing more than a 30-minute phone call and shipping your dad something Amazon’s website said were “Dad’s Favorites.” Like so many other things in our culture today, the commercialization of this holiday obscures its true meaning. Father’s Day is about so much more than store

It seems like a day doesn’t go by without some female high school teacher getting arrested for having sexual relations with an underage student. The story line is always the same. Ms. Hotpants either gets caught in the act or because her student paramour shares with the world the naked selfies that for some weird reason she just had to send to his cell phone. Invariably the teacher is quickly and unceremoniously condemned, fired from her job and arrested. This sequence of events always seemed appropriate. But, having had the benefit of reading the recent report by the Justice Department’s

The law is supposed to apply equally to all of us. But some of us seem to be more equal that others. In what appears to be a not-so-coincidental effort by the anti-Trump deep state to distract from the damning Department of Justice Inspector General’s report yesterday — shedding light on the FBI’s gross mishandling of the Clinton email investigation — New York’s attorney general dropped a headline-grabbing lawsuit against Donald Trump, his three eldest children and Trump foundation directors. The suit alleges a series of misdeeds by the Trump family in how they’ve operated its charitable foundation over the past

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley is just about killing it at the global body. In recent remarks to the General Assembly, Haley first condemned the anti-Israel faction of the bunch for using the global body for politics, not peace promotion. And then, dramatically enough, she brought to vote a U.S.-penned measure that explicitly faulted Hamas for violence at the Gaza border — a measure that was tacked on as an amendment to an anti-Israel resolution and that actually received the thumbs-up from the majority of the voting parties. Did you get that? It actually received a majority backing. This Haley amendment

Janique Walker knows the cost of a split second. Her younger brother, 17-year-old Charles Macklin, was killed while trying to steal a Jeep from a Chicago fire lieutenant on the West Side last August. The lieutenant had left the Jeep running, and Macklin jumped behind the wheel. The lieutenant ran in front of the Jeep and shouted, “Get out,” according to a police report. When Macklin began pulling away, the lieutenant drew his gun and fired through the open driver’s side window, hitting the teen in the chest. Macklin’s last words were, “Sorry, bro,” according to the police report. The teen died on the pavement. He did not have a gun on

The report, issued Thursday, shows that Hillary Clinton – like her husband, former President Bill Clinton – has gotten away with things most people could never do without being punished. The stark double standard substantiates the growing public distrust of an FBI gone rogue. Clearly, the Clintons believe there is one set of rules and laws for them, and a different set for everybody else. As the proud grandson of a career FBI agent, I’m frustrated to see the people in the FBI who we have entrusted with so much power failing to act properly, without taking political considerations into account. Never has the need for uninhibited oversight of a

Recent social media posts by tourists visiting San Francisco casts a troubling light on the City by the Bay over its homeless issue, open drug use and filthy streets. Since the beginning of the year, reports have surfaced of hypodermic needles dotting the streets, piles of human feces and expanding shanty towns for the increasing homeless population -- and now tourists are noticing, SFGate reported. "Is this normal or am I in a ´bad part of town?´” an Australian Reddit user asked the San Francisco Reddit community Wednesday. “Why is this city so terrifying?” a Canadian visitor asked on Reddit Sunday. Former first lady Laura Bush tore into the Trump administration for separating migrant families at the border, calling the “zero tolerance” policy “cruel” and “immoral.” Bush penned an op-ed for the Washington Post, which was published Sunday night as public outcry over the hundreds of children in detention centers intensified. “I live in a border state,” Bush wrote. “I appreciate the need to enforce and protect our international boundaries, but this zero-tolerance policy is cruel. It is immoral. And it breaks my heart.” Bush’s commentary comes as more images and accounts from inside the detention centers have

Roseanne Barr has become untouchable due to the "Valerie Jarrett/Ambien/Planet of the Apes" controversy, irrevocably contaminated by racism. This presents a problem for ABC, which canceled her revived show but wants the show to return in some form because it had high ratings. The apparent solution is to create a new show focused on the daughter character "Darlene," which would exclude Roseanne. Unfortunately, Roseanne Barr owns a chunk of the show, and ABC doesn´t want to be seen letting Barr profit from it, so ABC is in talks to buy the show from Barr so she would not technically profit

The Justice Department’s tepid OIG report, with its risible assertion that there was no political bias in the FBI’s Clinton email probe, suggests that it was written by people afraid to tell the unvarnished truth about the conduct of the federal government’s police apparatus, an agency that openly defies congressional oversight and has participated in a vendetta against a sitting president. The FBI’s leadership clearly hopes that the Democrats will win majorities in Congress and put a halt to the investigations into its multifarious abuses of power. The OIG is loath to face the ruthless reprisals that would inevitably follow

The president of Harvard´s teaching hospital got to thinking one day and decided there were too many portraits of white male doctors hung in a popular amphitheater. She bemoaned the horrible situation that people walking into the amphitheater didn´t feel like they "belonged." The problem cried out for a solution. So she moved several portraits of prominent white doctors in order to be more diverse and inclusive. Problem solved? FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- An Indiana hospital for the Department of Veterans Affairs temporarily removed its military flags to put up an LGBT pride flag Tuesday. Some veterans in Fort Wayne, Indiana arrived at the VA hospital Tuesday morning and noticed all the military flags had been removed. On one of the flagpoles was a rainbow flag, in honor of LGBT pride month, WPTA in Fort Wayne reported. Some people in the area questioned the VA´s decision. The floats at the Boise Pride Festival have changed drastically over nearly three decades. Dallas Chase knows this well. Chase, 71, attended the first festival in Boise, an informal gathering in 1989. She was part of the team that built the first "float." It consisted of a borrowed wagon from her neighbor decorated with painted cardboard. "It was done in secret in my garage," Chase said. In those days, Chase said festivalgoers wore masks to avoid having their identities revealed. Anti-gay protesters would line the streets, dressed in black and holding aggressive, defamatory signs, said Robert Franklin, who was also

Phil Mickelson´s 48th birthday took a stunning turn at the US Open on Saturday when he stopped a putt from rolling off the 13th green. Clearly at the end of his tether after a shocking run of bogeys in his third round, the much-decorated American embarrassed himself when another putt rolled past the hole. Instead of waiting to see where it finished, he stopped the ball with his putter and knocked it back whence it came.
