Self-Driving Uber Car

SAN FRANCISCO — A woman in Tempe, Ariz., died after being hit by a self-driving car operated by Uber, in what appears to be the first known death of a pedestrian struck by an autonomous vehicle on public roads. The Uber vehicle was in autonomous mode with a human safety driver at the wheel when it struck the woman, who was crossing the street outside of a crosswalk, the Tempe police said in a statement. The episode occurred overnight, although the authorities did not specify whether it was late Sunday or early Monday. The woman was not publicly identified. An

Who didn´t see this coming. Those self-driving semis scare me even more than cars. They could do a whole lot of damage and it´s terrifying to envision.

I do not think self driving cars is a good idea at all.
Unless they have their own set lanes and own areas. Which of course will never happen.
Might as well build a monorail system.

I´m afraid it was inevitable. Now we´ll see who is financially responsible if the driver isn´t at the wheel.

We´re simply not at that level of tech capability yet. Pushing way too fast. And personally I don´t want to use the Microsoft approach of letting the self-driving cars out on the street and then fixing the bugs as they are encountered - unless the cars are less than 6 inches long, weigh less than 8 oz and don´t exceed 5 miles per hour. They can collect their data in the real-world that way. Using full size cars is simply too dangerous to humans. Semis? Madness! If they´re so certain the tech is ready for the real-world, the CEOs shouldn´t have any problem agreeing to be executed if one of their devices kills another human. After all, that´s what they are asking the gereral population to accept when they put these devices on the roads.

So, who is responsible? The "safety driver" who was no doubt asleep, or effectively so - humans are horribly bad at monitoring automated systems, hopeless, almost.

Or the computer programmers who made the faulty program that killed her?

Or the installer or repairmen on the sensors and computers on the car?

Nobody will be responsible. The responsibility is effectively smeared so thin and so wide that nobody is "at fault".

Yet she is still dead. There will be many, many more - and al "nobldy´s fault".

Ban automated cars. Now.

The linked article about the Tesla driver who died when a tractor-trailer crossed the road in front of him is well worth a read, too. Those who make these cars are fighting regulation. The cars have software that apparently brakes when a car stops in front of them, but are not able to deal with cross traffic.

A gimmick. And a dangerous one.

I have always liked driving my own car. Far prefer it to being a passenger.

The goal is not to develop autonomous vehicles that never hurt or kill anyone. That is impossible in the real world. The goal is to develop autonomous vehicles that are significantly safer over time than human drivers. The death toll from drunk, medically impaired, distracted, and otherwise unsafe human drivers is vastly higher than any level that would occur for autonomous vehicles. The fact that the woman was killed with a human safety driver in the car suggests that neither a human or computer could have prevented the accident in this case. Analysis will be needed to improve the system but we can´t abandon this important life saving technology because it isn´t perfect.

Driving is surprisingly, incredibly complicated. Alert humans can perform the myriad recognitions and responses required, at this point, computer programs, even given all the sensors, etc. cannot. I agree that it is possible that the current programs might actually be safer drivers than the average human. I do not know.

Not to defend driverless cars ... but ... even if the car had been actively driven by a human driver, there´s no guarantee the car would have been able to stop in time when a jaywalker crossed in front of it. The woman is dead because she attempted to cross the street illegally, and not in the well-marked pedestrian crosswalk 50 feet away.

Was she drunk or looking at her phone? What part of look both ways or use a crosswalk did she miss in her upbringing? She can´t see a car coming toward her on a street?

Some people are going to find a way to break any rule and use zero common sense while doing it. The car wasn´t out of control, she was. Same as a cat or dog running into the street, except she should have known better. Now IF she had been in a crosswalk going when the light was right, that would be different. Too bad, but really you can´t play in traffic.

James Woods went there. Late Saturday night, patriotic actor James Woods asked anyone who attended Columbia University and recalled Obama as a student there to please respond by tweeting a picture of him at Columbia. Twitter erupted and the responses were hilarious. Barry Hussein Obama’s records are still sealed so we don’t know what his grades were like nor do we know the content of any papers he wrote. People who attended Columbia University at the same time as Obama do not recall seeing him or having any classes with him.

As president of S.F. Travel, the city’s visitors bureau, Joe D’Alessandro’s job is to promote San Francisco. You’d think he’d be hyping the city’s gorgeous vistas, top-notch restaurants and glorious museums. Instead, he’s getting honest. Sure, San Francisco has great facets worthy of postcards and travel books, but it also has a worsening underbelly that D’Alessandro says he can no longer gloss over. People injecting themselves with drugs in broad daylight, their dirty needles and other garbage strewn on the sidewalks. Tent camps. Human feces. The threatening behavior of some people who appear either mentally ill or high. Petty theft. “The streets are

After starting an advertiser boycott of Fox News Channel host Laura Ingraham, gun-control activist David Hogg has set his sights on two new targets — iconic gun manufacturer Smith & Wesson and its capital backers. In a series of tweets Tuesday afternoon, Mr. Hogg sicced his 764,000 Twitter followers on five investment companies, singling out two most of all — Blackrock and Vanguard Group. “.@blackrock and @Vanguard_Group are two of the biggest investors in gun manufacturers; if you use them, feel free to let them know,” he tweeted with a winking emoji. In one follow-up tweet he used the hashtags #BoycottBlackrock and

DENVER – The City of Denver wants to double the amount of money it spends on affordable housing every year and part of that plan involves raising taxes on marijuana sales. The city announced on Monday a new partnership with the Denver Housing Authority that would involve boosting Denver’s affordable housing fund to $30 million annually and issuing more than $100 million in bonds to support more affordable housing over the next five years. “We can all agree – more resources are key to addressing this challenge,” Denver Mayor Michael Hancock said. “The Housing Authority has been a trusted partner

SAN DIEGO - Fayaz Nawabi has never met President Donald Trump. But he credits the president with convincing him to run for office. Nawabi, a 31-year-old candidate for San Diego City Council, supports almost everything that Trump opposes: He is pro-affordable housing, pro-environment, pro-immigrant and pro-refugee. That makes him part of the blue wave of new liberal candidates spurred to run by Trump´s election and policies. But Nawabi is also part of a notable subset: the blue Muslim wave. More than 90 American Muslims, nearly all of them Democrats, are running for public office across the country this year. Many
