Officials say three bodies have been pulled from two cars which have been removed from under the rubble of a collapsed pedestrian walkway at Florida International University in Miami. Rescue workers started to free the vehicles that were trapped under the collapsed concrete bridge early Saturday morning. Shortly before dawn two crushed vehicles were removed by using massive inflatable straps just before 7 a.m. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief Arthur Holmes Jr. says crews won´t leave until all the vehicles that were trapped under the bridge are retrieved. The first vehicle, a crushed Jeep Grand Cherokee, was pulled out just after

FTA: "Meanwhile, it has emerged that an engineer left a voicemail two days before the catastrophic bridge failure to say some cracking had been found at one end of the concrete span, but the voicemail wasn´t picked up until after the collapse. The voicemail left on a landline wasn´t heard by a state DOT employee until Friday because the employee was out of the office on an assignment."

Not good. No amount of money will bring back loved ones, of course, but, IMO, there must be compensation for the families, and all responsible for the flaws in this bridge must be held accountable. This was just horrifying.

One of the real disadvantages of reinforced concrete construction is that it is VERY heavy, so if it goes wrong and collapses, anything under it is just flat.
A friend killed in the Hyatt Skywalks collapse was only identified by the nearby purse with ID, and the process of elimination of all the others, sad to say.

The white truck shown crushed in one of the photos is from Struct*ur*al Technologies. They’d have been working on the bridge when it collapsed. Here is the company’s website:

#4, I would presume that getting squashed flat by thousands of tons of concrete cannot hurt for very long.

I met a paramedic who worked with the Hyatt Regency Skywalks collapse a few years after.
He said it was very stressful, even for trained pros who work car accidents all the time. The worst was a man with a leg trapped under 100,000 lbs of concrete and steel, the rest of him out and sort of OK, but bleeding badly from the trapped leg. They had only minutes to quickly amputate to get him stabilized and transported. The best way available was a chainsaw. That has left an awful image all these years, and that happened in 1981. But, I believe they saved his life, so as horrible as it sounds, it was the right thing to do.

As an engineer, these kinds of failures anger me greatly, because it means someone who was entrusted with the safety of others, and who was SUPPOSED to be intelligent, trained, and careful was stupid and careless. I was always ultra careful in designs where human safety was involved.

I´m an engineer also, very few accidents in our profession compared to the damage the political and lawyer professions cause.

Just think if we as engineer claimed a city as a engineering sanctuary city - come and build what you want and you will not be held liable.

Considering that third world primitives can build a bridge across a chasm that lasts for years using vines, we really haven´t come all that far. This catastrophe should not have happened and those responsible should live the rest of their lives thinking about what they have done.

Maybe one of the contributing Engineers here can enlighten us on why a pedestrian bridge has to be 950tons. I´m not being facetious by any means, I really would like to know. It would seam that there are lighter and more reliable methods to building a simple bridge.

Last year a bridge on an interstate in Atlanta collapsed when a wino started a fire under it. Couldn´t believe that concrete could be damaged by fire. The FIU bridge was being built using a new technique. Appears the method needs to reexamined. Awful to think that if the people who were killed had left a minute earlier or later they´d still be alive. Hope they don´t try to replace the bridge.

#11, good question, it is because in reinforced concrete construction there is perhaps 2% of the steel used in an all steel design, and concrete is a lot less expensive than steel.

Also, steel requires constant stripping and repainting because it corrodes in the weather. Concrete is largely maintenance free.

Finally - probably more important to the politicians who decide this stuff, concrete designs "look better, or look modern", openwork truss bridges like we used up until the 60s are just "old fashioned", so even if they were cheaper, the politicians and artsy folks wouldn´t want them.

Because concrete is heavy and weak (in addition to being pretty cheap), to carry much useful load, it takes a lot, because most of the strength is used just supporting the dead load, meaning the bridge structure itself. In a pedestrian bridge the live load (people) are likely maxed out at maybe 1-2% of the dead load (weight of empty bridge).

Democrats’ proposed legislation to prohibit so-called border separations would actually prevent federal law enforcement agencies almost anywhere inside the United States from arresting and detaining criminals who are parents having nothing to do with unlawfully crossing the border and seeking asylum. Every Senate Democrat has now signed on to cosponsor a bill written so carelessly that it does not distinguish between migrant children at the border and U.S. citizen children already within the United States. The bill further does not distinguish between federal officers handling the border crisis and federal law
