Dog dies after United flight
attendant forces it into overhead bin

On Monday night, a dog died in a plane after a United Airlines flight attendant forced the dog into an overhead bin. Maggie Gremminger, a passenger on a flight from Houston to New York’s LaGuardia Airport, uploaded a photo of the dog’s owners on Twitter. “I want to help this woman and her daughter. They lost their dog because of an @united flight attendant. My heart is broken,” reads the image caption. The Points Guy reports that during their flight, an attendant insisted that the woman put her dog, which was held in a TSA-approved pet carrier, in an overhead bin for

How about stuffing this idiot flight attendant in the overhead bin. What good does an apology from United do?

Why did the dog die? The container looked like it had mesh fabric to allow air. Those bins are not air tight. Why wasn´t the owner checking on the dog several times during the flight to reassure it? Did they just cram the critter in and slam the door shut and never check on it the whole flight? Did the dog get scared and died from fright? Did the owner violet the agreement that the dogs flight case fit under the seat in front. It sure looks like it wouldn´t fit. If the dog was in a hard case and put in the normal place for a dog during flight wouldn´t it have died from flight there as well?

Aren´t reporters the least bit curious? Can they not think of these questions?

I imagine the dog was too big to fit under the seat, as required, and the overhead bin is a bigger space.

If I was flying with my dog in a TSA carrier and told to put her into the overhead bin - they would have an outraged crazy lady to deal with! Well, actually I wouldn´t do that - would just tell them in no uncertain terms, NO, NO, NO.

Another reason for me to never fly again.

There is no reason being placed in the overhead bin in and of itself harmed the dog. There is more to this story.

No matter what, it’s a dog. Your dog does not love you and has no humanity.

Taking your animal with you everywhere you go like it’s a child is psychotic.

“Taking your animal everywhere with you,” is not psychotic, #5. There are both medical and physical reasons. Each Daughter had a pet after their dad left. They were great comfort, and were models of “unconditional love.”

From the article United agrees and has recognized the tragedy, The pup was only 10-months old.

Maybe get a dog sitter like people used to do instead of taking the dog on flights, out to eat, into a store, everywhere. Service and vet dogs exempt from rant.

Someone once told me that he judges a persons character by how their pet reacts to them and how they treat their pets. I long ago adopted that philosophy and will have nothing to do with anyone that views a pet as just an animal, and utter contempt for anyone that would insult me for my love of my pets. Further, had it been me..... the air marshal would have had to pull me off of a very bloody flight attendant.

Now that I got that off of my chest.....

The owner, in my opinion, bears some responsibility, in this case. Were it my pet, I would have been checking on her frequently. Correction, I would have de-planed before allowing my puppy to be shoved into an overhead, especially in a soft sided carrier.

I suspect that the puppy was shoved in there and with shifting articles was compressed and eventually asphyxiated. If the pup was the only thing in the overhead, she may have been ok. The overhead isnt airtight, but there easily could be a lack of oxygen if it was packed.

I am a dog owner but I would never inflict my dog on passengers on a flight. For what reason? Isn´t air travel difficult enough without animals being crammed in with you. Other than a seeing-eye dog, I can think of no good reason for an animal to be with other passengers. I am sorry the puppy died but if it didn´t fit under the seat, where was it supposed to go?

If it was an TSA approved pet carrier, that should have meant it would fit under the seat. The flight attendant needs to lose their job. Or at least get a month´s suspension without pay.

If somebody takes the time to find out what its approved, it is NOT up to a snotty attendant to say otherwise.

I’m with #5, 10 & 29, and I’m a dog lover and owner from way back. But, pets are animals and they do not belong on airplanes, in restaurants, or any other human establishment, unless it’s a seeing-eye dog. I once went to an allergy doctor’s office and there was little football dog behind the reception desk. No, actually, it was ON the reception desk. I kid you not...an ALLEGY doctor.

#31 I am with you. I love animals but I am allergic to dogs and things have totally gotten out of hand. For instance, it´s against the law to bring a non-service dog in a grocery store, but it happens all too often. Then there are the people who pretend all of their animals are service animals, others be damned.

I have two dogs. If I´m traveling, someone else cares for them or I book them into a kennel. Sorry, but something´s awry with any mother traveling with two "young" children who also thinks she needs to take her dog along. Spare the dog from the trip, and lavish your attentions on your two children.

It seems like the owner´s fault to me.
The owner is the one who accepted responsibility for the animal.
If someone offers to put your puppy in an unsafe environment, decline the offer. Take another flight. Make better arrangements for the animal.
Sure it´s inconvenient. That´s what you signed up for when you decide to get a pet.
