Italy: The Political Laboratory
of the West

PJ Media, by Michael Ledeen

Italy has long been the political laboratory of the West, creating fascism and eurocommunism, and playing a major role in the creation of the European Union. Its inconclusive national elections on March 4th provide us with a hazy view of the near future: redefinition of traditional politics, and perhaps even of the world at large. The most significant event on election day in Italy came when a young woman, topless for the occasion, confronted 82-year old Silvio Berlusconi at his voting place and pronounced him an irrelevancy. I wonder whom she voted for, although we can certainly be confident it

Aah, yes, Italy.
It was 1960. I was in college ROTC. I lost the draw and had to do a paper on Italy´s political history since 1945.
What a mess!
On average the ruling party switched once a year.
It was very tiresome.
So the current turmoil is TRADITION!

I used to live in Napoli, many years ago, and learned to enjoy the anarchic traffic, their wonderful food, the magnificent Vesuvio and the ubiquitous Roman ruins.

It was clear to me that northern Italians and southern Italians were very different. I was shocked to see the myriad of hammer and sickle Communist Party poster slathered every where.
The Red Brigades were a real shock, too.

I hope that Italy is able to push these leftists out and start to let real free markets and capitalism fix their problems. I spent a week and a half there last year, and rediscovered some of the fondness for Italy, Italians and their history from years ago.

Best wishes, and grazie, for a lot of good memories.

Venezuela “Votes.” Is There a

An election is going on in Venezuela. In a country where there are no more pets and children join gangs to fight over dumpster refuse, while their parents battle for dead rats to eat for dinner, you would expect the incumbent party to lose a free election. But Nicolas Maduro will no doubt be re-elected, in part because the polls are being boycotted by most of his opponents. So Venezuela’s socialist catastrophe will most likely continue, for now. The Associated Press reports: "Sunday’s election has drawn broad criticism since some of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s most-popular rivals were barred from running,

Sen. Bill Nelson campaigned across Tampa Bay Saturday, knocking on doors in southern Hillsborough County and joining a "Hands Across the Sand" demonstration in Clearwater Beach ("As long as I´m around there´s not going to be any oil rigs out there!") and, yet again, showing off his inner Jack Palance with an impromptu set of pull-ups with Clearwater firefighters. (Snip) Nelson, 75, rarely misses an opportunity to demonstrate his virility. From Pinellas, Florida´s senior senator moved on to Sun City Center, a retirement area in southern Hillsborough that is no longer the deep red Republican stronghold it used to be.

Liberal Lies And Slanders Are A

How does the left think that normal people are going to react to the left’s rejection of the idea of rational discussion and debate and it’s attempt to keep them from participating in their own governance? What does the elite think lurks at the bottom of that slippery slope? Do liberals think the normals will A) meekly submit to abuse and be cowed into submission, or B) that the normals will grow even more militant and make their voices heard in other, nastier ways? Spoiler: The answer is B. Donald Trump is just one manifestation of the blowback against the rule-by-contempt our alleged betters currently practice.

The scenario anticipated more than a year ago in King vs King has advanced to the semi-finals. The Russian collusion affair, which began with the incoming president on the defensive, has now become a set of simultaneous offensives with each side trying to jail the other. "President Trump on Sunday he would ´demand´ a Justice Department ´infiltrated´ his 2016 presidential campaign," suggesting Obama administration officials may have been responsible for what has been called Watergate on steroids. I hereby demand, and will do so officially tomorrow, that the Department of Justice look into whether or not the FBI/DOJ

The sociological, theological, cultural and political left lie often. This is not new. That they lie regarding the issue of guns is taken for granted. That they do so in the aftermath of children dying—usually as a result of their horrid policies—they do so with such predictability you could set one’s watch to it. The shooting in Texas this week was no exception. Within minutes of the first reports breaking the wires, the twitter-verse had exploded worldwide with the demands that “something be done.” (And you realize that they say this as though they are the only ones who think so.) What a snake is Senator Mark Warner, a man of false sincerity and partisan spin is Mark Warner. This certainly comes through in Jake Tapper’s interview with him this morning. I will say that much in its favor. Midway through the interview, Tapper persists in a few questions about evidence of Russian collusion that Warner artfully dodges in his smarmy style. Tapper then takes up the subject of the latest news in the Trump/Russia investigation involving the disclosure of the identity of FBI informant Stefan Halper. Warner decries its illegality and attributes it to Trump’s allies. Tapper immediately introduces the name of

Can Venezuela survive

As Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro seeks another six-year term on Sunday, it’s clear that he — like the rest of the country — is running on empty. Oil-rich and wealthy just a few years ago, Venezuela today is being gutted by hyperinflation, food shortages, collapsing infrastructure, international sanctions, growing protests and an exodus of the desperate. Maduro, 55, is expected to win Sunday’s vote, which is being decried as fraudulent by the international community, amid opposition calls for a boycott. And analysts expect that will mean more pain, trouble and repression for the struggling South American country.

WASHINGTON – Sen. We’ve won the argument – 90 percent of Americans think that we should have universal background checks. Today, 67 percent of Americans, two-thirds of Americans think that should regulate the purchase and sale of assault weapons,” Murphy said at the Center for American Progress Ideas Conference on Tuesday. Asha Rangappa, a former FBI agent, argues that the FBI didn’t spy on the Trump campaign (or use an informant, as she delicately puts it) to go after Donald Trump. Rather, it did so to protect him. Rangappa argues that the FBI should have investigated alleged Russian infiltration of the Trump campaign aggressively and directly, given the gravity of this threat. However, she continues, it elected to investigate quietly through an informant in order to avoid casting public suspicion on the campaign and to thereby avoid injuring Trump. It’s a creative argument but there are a few problems. First, it assumes, in

It´s still Sigmund Freud´s world. The rest of us are imprisoned in it. The whole intellectual apparatus behind political correctness, micro-aggression theory, totalitarian campus speech codes, the #metoo obsession with sexual mistreatment--all of it begins with Freud. Frederick Crews´ new book Freud: The Making of an Illusion shreds the reputation of the founder of psychoanalysis. It´s a detective story worthy of the ages and a terrific read, but more importantly, it´s a corrective to reigning liberal ideology. You can´t understand liberalism unless you know Freud, and you can´t appreciate what a tissue of lies and half-truths

One of the more notable differences between Watergate and the metastasizing scandals involving the FBI, our intelligence agencies, and the Obama administration -- subjects of the soon-to-be-released inspector general´s report -- is that the media exposed Watergate. They aided and abetted the current transgressions. By providing a willing and virtually unquestioned repository for every anonymous leaker (as long as he or she was on the "right" side) in Washington and beyond, the press has evolved from being part of the solution to being a major part of the problem. Gone are the days of the true "whistle-blower."

A student at Santa Fe High School in Texas killed ten people today and wounded ten more, according to reports. The attacker used two guns — a shotgun and a .38 revolver. Both were owned legally by his father, according to the same reports. One of the wounded was a retired police officer hired by the school as a “resources officer.” He confronted the killer, who shot him. Another resources officer also engaged the killer. This occurred early on and is thought to have limited the bloodshed. I believe armed school personnel are the key to ending the rash of school shootings because their ability to thwart shooters will deter these losers from
