Putin´s Three Legged Stool

As the world waits in suspense for the West´s retaliation against Putin´s mini-WMD attack many are asking why the Russian leader has engaged in this dangerous provocation? The Russian crisis has its roots in the Kremlin´s dangerous reliance on oil, crime and nuclear weapons as the cornerstones of its power. By trying to maintain Russia as a superpower on this unstable 3 legged stool Putin has set up a destructive resonance from which it is proving difficult to escape. The Russian economy is losing its fight against the American fracking industry. "We cannot ignore the growth coming from shale," IEA Executive Director

One wonders whether Mr. Tillerson´s sudden departure was because of a disagreement with Trump over response to the nerve-agent attack.

Author doesn´t use the analogy correctly. A three-legged stool is always stable, It´s the 4-legged stool that´s usually off balance and needs trimming.

When I spent some time in Vladivostok and Khabarovsk I saw relatively small, neatly kept Russian cities an 8 hour jet flight east of Moscow, surrounded by North Korea, China and thousands of miles of nothingness taiga and tundra. The few dozen nicely painted Russian navy ships in port were said to never sail by the locals, and they doubted that they were able to put to sea.

It was apparent then, 5 years ago, that China could come and take this away from Russia whenever China chose to do it. Nukes against nukes, neither will likely use them, so it will be conventional forces. China could bring 25 for every Russian soldier.

Russia builds almost nothing that anyone else wants to buy, except weapons systems. They export raw materials, pretty much untouched by Russian hands. Oil, gas, steel, raw logs, some gold and platinum from Khabarovsk.
They are demographicly screwed, they are having very few childred, they import most modern goods, while the ruble is now at 57 for a dollar. It was less than half that when I worked there, so all "nice" things have doubled in price in the last five years. And yet, I found substantial numbers of well educated scientists and engineers, capable of designing and building modern things, but caught in the trap of the kleptocracy that is strangling them all, crushing all small businesses with massive, systemic corruption and no rule of law above the traffic cop.

Circling the drain. With a few nukes, and a criminal, ex-KGB, meglomaniacal madman at the helm. No way that could turn out badly.

Every time you hear some young hip woke leftist at a technology company like Facebook telling you he needs to protect you from fake news, remember that what he´s saying is that you´re a knuckle-dragging Neanderthal who is too stupid to figure out that it´s okay for good people like Hillary to break the law. In fact, he´s saying the majority of Americans are too intellectually challenged to discriminate between fact and fiction. Historically, "common" folk were able to figure out that the National Enquirer´s stories about two-headed alien Elvis clones are fake and even that professional wrestling is staged.

It has been said a nation can have either welfare or open borders -- but not both -- in the same way one can have a cool air-conditioned room in a blazing desert or an open door -- but not both. It is the inequality between the outside and inside temperatures that the door is intended to preserve. The problem of keeping the room cool while leaving the door open is now consuming Angela Merekel´s European Union as the refugee problem grows in political size. Can the EU have no internal borders if it lacks an external one? If there´s no

TAMPA — Loueita Hargens had known for years how her son Bradley Dykes would die. She had seen him cycle through drugs of choice, had lost track of the number of times he’d wound up in the hospital or prison. A recovering alcoholic herself, she cut him off several years ago. "If you want to talk, you can find me at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting," the mother told her son. It finally happened in November: Dykes fatally overdosed on the synthetic opioid fentanyl. He was 46. Hargens was grief stricken but not shocked, and months later, another emotion has joined the mix. She hopes the federal prosecution of her

A massive python killed a woman in Indonesia, the second time in just over a year one of the giant constrictors swallowed a human in adjacent provinces in that country. The woman, 54-year-old Wa Tiba, went missing while checking her vegetable garden near her village on Muna island in Southeast Sulawesi province on Thursday evening, said the chief of the village of Persiapan Lawela, Faris, who uses a single name. Wa Tiba was concerned about wild boars getting into her corn, planted about a half-mile from her house. When she hadn’t returned by sunrise Friday, her sister went to look for her. She found only Tiba’s footprints,

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson — who replaced former Gov. Eric Greitens June 1 — declined to apologize, but he did attempt to clarify his position on LGBT rights this week. While serving as lieutenant governor, Parson told the Midwest Baptist publication Word & Way last year that while he didn’t believe Missourians who were gay or transgender should face job discrimination. “Do I think that you should go out there and fire them for that? I don’t,” Parson said. But, because he is a Christian — and this is what Missouri Democrats pounced on — Parson also said, “I’m old school. I know

Dipping into the Department of Justice Inspector General report released yesterday, we are inundated with information and interesting story lines. One such story line involves Bill Clinton’s response to the uproar created over his tarmac meeting with then Attorney General Loretta Lynch the Monday before Hillary Clinton’s scheduled weekend interview with the FBI in the email “investigation,” as we should probably refer to it. The uproar led to FBI Director James Comey improperly inserting himself into the decision making role over the prosecution of Hillary Clinton. In the event, in his press conference of July 5, he let her off

A story of high tragedy is buried deep in the inspector general´s (IG) report published Thursday. Like Oedipus before him, FBI staffer Peter Strzok feared a terrible future and fought to prevent it. Ironically, his very efforts to stop Donald Trump from becoming president may have sealed that very fate. Lisa Page, Strzok´s co-worker and lover, breathlessly texted him, "[Trump´s] not ever going to become president, right? Right?!" To this, Strzok replied, "No. No he won´t. We´ll stop it." Page and Strzok have become notorious for the anti-Trump texts they sent to one another. The IG report cited these texts as

Despite misleading headlines, the inspector general´s report on the FBI´s investigation into Hillary Clinton´s emails shows a powerful law enforcement agency hobbled by bias and dishonesty. The press has seized on the IG´s statement that he "did not find documentary or testimonial evidence that improper considerations, including political bias, directly affected the specific investigative decisions we reviewed." But that is simply Inspector Generalese for, "No one confessed or left a paper trail." In fact, several agents expressed a toxic hatred of Donald Trump and even, as one employee texted, a conviction that all Trump supporters

Fired from the job by President Trump, he presented himself as a model of ethical leadership with a best-selling how-to book. Roseanne Barr has become untouchable due to the "Valerie Jarrett/Ambien/Planet of the Apes" controversy, irrevocably contaminated by racism. This presents a problem for ABC, which canceled her revived show but wants the show to return in some form because it had high ratings. The apparent solution is to create a new show focused on the daughter character "Darlene," which would exclude Roseanne. Unfortunately, Roseanne Barr owns a chunk of the show, and ABC doesn´t want to be seen letting Barr profit from it, so ABC is in talks to buy the show from Barr so she would not technically profit

The FBI’s leadership clearly hopes that the Democrats will win majorities in Congress and put a halt to the investigations into its multifarious abuses of power. Illegal Immigration: The latest outrage by the Trump administration is its policy of "ripping" children away from parents who´ve crossed the border illegally. As with so many other things involving Trump, there´s plenty of emotion but precious little in the way of facts. The furor reached critical mass after the Department of Homeland Security said on Friday that 1,995 children had been separated from their illegal border crossing parents from mid-April through May. That number included, DHS said, cases where the adults were arrested for illegal entry, immigration violations, or possible criminal conduct. The practice has generated a rising storm of protests,
