For Decades, Our Coverage Was Racist. To Rise
Above Our Past, We Must Acknowledge It

National Geographic, by Susan Goldberg

It is November 2, 1930, and National Geographic has sent a reporter and a photographer to cover a magnificent occasion: the crowning of Haile Selassie, King of Kings of Ethiopia, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah. There are trumpets, incense, priests, spear-wielding warriors. The story runs 14,000 words, with 83 images. If a ceremony in 1930 honoring a black man had taken place in America, instead of Ethiopia, you can pretty much guarantee there wouldn’t have been a story at all. Even worse, if Haile Selassie had lived in the United States, he would almost certainly have been denied entry

Add the "Internationalist Geographic" to the long list of print publications that has become a politically-correct, leftist mouth organ no longer worth the read. I canceled my subscription long ago.

Booker T Washington said: "I am afraid that there is a certain class of race-problem solvers who don´t want the patient to get well, because as long as the disease holds out they have not only an easy means of making a living, but also an easy medium through which to make themselves prominent before the public."
I say: “There is a certain class of degreed dumbed-down, self-absorbed, spoon-fed, celebrity-obsessed, White guilt-ridden, Birkenstock-wearing, bottled-water-drinking, kumbaya-singing, Xanax-disabled, Rainbow Plantation, COEXIST bumper-sticker Liberal-Progressive idiots wandering around in a Politically Correct smoke-screen who isn´t smart enough to wind their watches in order to tell that it is not the beginning of the 20th century any more!

There actually was a time that Nat Geo was a pretty good magazine - one that you put on the shelf and never threw out. Of course, there was also a time that Sat Night Live was funny - the “serve by” date on both expired a very long time ago.

Too bad they never got any photos of the guys Winnie Mandela executed by "necklacing" with a burning tire.

Isn´t it species-centric for them to publish exploitative photos of hummingbirds and bees? Doesn´t that just reinforce outdated norms and notions of human superiority?

When I was a kid, I had a customer on my paper route who (I did not know at the time) was dying. He invited me into his house and he had a complete collection of National Geo magazines. Shelf after shelf of the things. He told me- If you want them and can take them, they are all yours. Oh, how I wanted them. But, he told me to ask my Mom first, because he wanted to make sure they were preserved. I went home excitedly told Mom and she said (practical things first with ehr), where would we put them? Our hose was small and crowded- a brother and three sister! Sadly, I could not take them. After my customer passed, apparently there was an auction, because his house was very quickly vacant. I always wondered what happened to the NG mags. At the school library, I would read them every chance I got.

NG became a shame in these recent decades, though. All Global Warming and social agenda and all about the sad "Refugees"- remember the famous photo of the Afghan woman with the stunningly green eyes from 1985? The Mag became all about the leftist agenda. I tossed my subscription, and never looked at another issue.

The long-awaited showdown between the Justice Department and Congress is finally here. It started late Friday afternoon. While the rest of the country was parsing the just-released report on the FBI from the Justice Department’s inspector general, senior congressional leaders and selected committee chairmen quietly met with FBI Director Christopher Wray and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein at a secure location in the basement of the Capitol. At issue was Justice and FBI’s continuing defiance of congressional subpoenas. At the top of this list is the demand from the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence for documents about why and whether the

FBI Director Wray has said nothing to reassure Americans that he understands the serious corruption highlighted in the IG report. The FBI´s cover-ups and stonewalling on Wray´s watch add to his credibility problems. Both in is his press conference after the IG report was released, and in his testimony Monday before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Director Wray demonstrated he was more concerned about protecting the reputation of the institution of the FBI than about the astonishing corruption of top FBI officials detailed in the IG report. For once, the Southern Poverty Law Center has to cough up for an outrageous smear. The SPLC rakes in donations by claiming to fight hate, but its lists of hate groups routinely include not just truly vile outfits but also ones that simply don’t toe a politically correct line. It went too far in listing Maajid Nawaz and Quilliam, a think tank he founded, in its 2016 “Field Guide to Anti-Muslim Extremists,” which proclaimed in part: “Extremists routinely espouse a wide range of utter falsehoods, all designed to make Muslims appear as bloodthirsty terrorists or people intent on undermining American constitutional freedoms.” Actually,

The government is obsessed with your face. Do not be flattered. This is more of a creepy stalker fixation. From the federal Department of Homeland Security down to local police departments, governmental use of biometric facial recognition software has gained a startling amount of traction in recent years. And these agencies are getting help from big business, to boot. For example, DHS is reportedly developing a massive new biometric and biographic database with extensive data on citizens and foreigners alike. The Homeland Advanced Recognition Technology (HART) database will reportedly include at least seven biometric identifiers, including face and voice data, tattoos, DNA,

While the Trump administration is being slammed by critics for its "zero-tolerance" policy of separating children from adults who illegally enter the country, the outcry over the federal government´s handling of the sensitive issue of how to handle minors is hardly new. The Obama administration actually expanded the system of detaining families – typically mothers and their minor children – after a huge surge of Central Americans along the U.S.-Mexican border in 2014. The policy resulted in many minors being detained in various locations, in much-criticized conditions, either with their families or by themselves, if they had crossed the border alone. Videos

In the pre-dawn hours yesterday, the nation experienced yet another mass shooting. One dead, 22 injured, including a 13-year-old boy. It took place at the crowded Art All Night Trenton festival in New Jersey. To their limited credit, a couple of cable news outlets mentioned the shooting in their coverage yesterday and this morning. The New York Times wrote a rather lengthy article about it, though it showed up on page A-17. It received similarly “not prominent” coverage in other major papers. The Associated Press took a fairly deep dive on it, but you need to search around a bit

We have two choices when it comes to border security and interior enforcement. We can continue telegraphing the message that when you come here with children you are home free. This will continue fueling the drug crisis, growing MS-13, enriching the drug cartels, inducing sex trafficking and terrible crimes at the border, encouraging illegals to kidnap children to gain admission, and causing death and mayhem on both sides of the border. Or we could finally deter this behavior by announcing an end to any immigration requests not processed in a controlled environment through our embassy. If you are concerned about

Political spinning about the Department of Justice’s Inspector General’s report that came out last Thursday is all about shiny bits and pieces of the report. It misses the events outside the report’s four corners that magnify its importance tenfold. Let’s pull back on the stick, gain some altitude, and examine some of the more important facts. When we do, we have to conclude that the Augean Stables on Pennsylvania Avenue — the Justice Department building and, across the street, the J. Edgar Hoover FBI building — have to be cleaned out. The Pirlotts were finally vindicated in March 2018 when the Wisconsin-based Teamsters local mailed them separate checks of about $3,000 for failing to allow them to opt out of union dues. The case spanned five presidencies, dozens of National Labor Relations Board members, and numerous appearances before the D.C. Court of Appeals. In the time it took for the NLRB to

Which is only to say, few men in American history have possessed as thoroughly a misguided self-awareness as our former FBI director. As we now know, the erstwhile hero of the Trump Resistance had both mismanaged and misappropriated his power in ways that may have irreparably undermined the reputation of the most powerful enforcement agency in the United States. Illegal Immigration: The latest outrage by the Trump administration is its policy of "ripping" children away from parents who´ve crossed the border illegally. As with so many other things involving Trump, there´s plenty of emotion but precious little in the way of facts. The furor reached critical mass after the Department of Homeland Security said on Friday that 1,995 children had been separated from their illegal border crossing parents from mid-April through May.
