Why We Must Be Bold
on Welfare Reform

Daily Signal, by Kay Coles James

Washington is in a unique position to solve America’s welfare crisis for a very simple reason: Washington created it. The policy and programs it established a half-century ago have depleted people, obstructed their purpose, and extinguished their extraordinary possibilities. The evidence of this failure is all around us. Being black and the daughter of a former welfare recipient, I know firsthand the unintended harm welfare has caused. That’s why much of what I am about to share relates to the African-American experience. But this isn’t a problem specific to us. When it comes to welfare, the black community is merely America’s “canary

This is a very moving piece about the former strength of black families and institution and what happened when government made so many dependent on it, followed by sensible prescriptions for the way back to sanity.

Wonderful article thank you very much, but I’d like to address a significant point:

“The misguided compassion of this liberal policy...”

Kind hearted of the courageous Ms. Coles to view it that way but this was deliberately sinister. The same party that enslaved blacks conspired to keep them dependent and brainwashed to believe that party was their salvation.

Indeed the solution is work based in parallel with eliminating the incentives to do the wrong thing.

She is close to understanding, but her racism is blinding her.
Welfare is color blind, as are it´s policies.
There are more white people on welfare than black people, so why hasn´t white culture suffered the same fate? (I recognize the existence of white trash, but they are not mainstream white culture).

The real problem is a black culture rooted in a slave past. Many, if not most, white people are descendants of slaves, many with a family oral history of that slavery that persists today, but that does not make us feel any different from others who did not descend from slaves.
If anything, it makes us more likely to want independence and not want anything to do with what the government would call ´help´.
She needs to move on from the past and become an individual unshackled from it, for she has become a slave to the past.

FTA: “Who could come up with such an idea? The kind, it seems, who apparently just couldn’t see that doing this would destroy two of the most effective defenses against poverty: work and marriage.”

I’m assuming the author is presenting the question for the reader to ponder and she is fully aware of who came up with the idea and why; the old-line racists Democrats. They saw the threat of growing vibrant black communities with their professional, middle and lower classes residing together. In places like California, with no history of Jim Crow, blacks were residing is any neighborhood that met their economic resources, although most chose living with their own. As did other ethnicities; Chinese, Japanese, Irish, etc.

Black veterans returning from WWII began demanding the end of Jim Crow and the real Civil Rights movement was born. The old-line racist Democrats devised welfare as a pseudo plantation that would make the “negro” dependent, suppress the work ethic and shatter the family. Thereby corralling those “negroes” into ghettoes and letting them kill each other off. The master trick was labeling this evil as “progressive liberal” policy and selling it as compassion. [spit]

Only because of President Trump do we have the opportunity for common sense reform to the welfare system. Once the legislative hurdle is jumped, and I believe it will be, the biggest resistance to reform will be from the various Socialist Services departments. The entire profession is composed of dedicated socialists from intake worker to the director. Trust me, I served time at my county’s SS and experienced how they methodically drive out anyone with a hint of conservative thinking. They see the people in their programs as their customers and judge their organizational success on how many are on their rolls.

I have to disagree with #3. I do not see the author´s "racism." I think the author is unshackled from her past but remembers it. Both the author and #3 note that there are more white people on welfare than blacks. Of course. There are and always have been more white people than blacks in this country. A more meaningful measure would be the relative percentages by race.

The talk of "good intensions" needs to stop. It gives credit where none is deserved. Why fear being offensive? Why not speak the truth. The misery inflicted was intentional.

LBJ spoke these infamous words as regards the so-called Great Society: "We will have these niggers voting for us for the next 200 years"!

The government makes it too lucrative to leave welfare and if that´s not bad enough, look at the tax refunds unwed mothers receive. Let them pay US back for prenatal care, hospital bills and assistance they receive before refunding money they didn´t pay into the system.

I take issue with saying slaves were uneducated. Reading a diary from back when Williamsburg was the capital of VA, they insisted the children attend church and get an education. It was much later during the depression when hardly anyone got a full education. Blacks and whites alike couldn´t read and write and certainly didn´t leave Bible records.

Isaac Newton was a genius—perhaps the most intelligent man ever to walk this earth. It was he who uncovered the laws of motion, he who unraveled light’s mysteries, and he who first invented calculus. His work underpins modern mathematics, physics, and engineering. And yet Newton lost his entire fortune in the South Sea Bubble—the 18th century’s great stock market crash. Newton was dreadfully overconfident. He thought his genius in mathematics would make him a genius investor. He was wrong. He had no idea what he was doing, and he paid the price. Not much is predictable about President Donald Trump’s White House. For 30 minutes or so, Pompeo would help Trump digest the country’s most closely held secrets about the world’s most pressing conflicts. He used “killer graphics” to keep Trump on point. He carved out time for general “knowledge building” on long-term strategy. He fielded Trump’s questions on any number of topics. At the City College of New York in the late 1930s, my father, an Orthodox Jew, wrote his senior class thesis on anti-Semitism in America. He delineated common realities of the era, such as Jews’ admission to law firms, country clubs and colleges being denied or restricted, and various other manifestations of popular and institutional anti-Semitism. Yet he taught his two sons—my older brother and me—to believe that we, as Americans, were the luckiest Jews in Jewish history. Muslim couples who have a Sharia wedding will be made to register their marriage in law under government plans to give greater rights to women. Under the proposals an imam who presides at an Islamic wedding could face prosecution unless he ensures that it was registered beforehand or on the same day. The change would allow women access to divorce courts if their marriage broke down, removing the need for them to petition a Sharia council, a group that adjudicates on Islamic law. It is estimated that about 100,000 Muslim women who have gone through Sharia ceremonies in Britain are

News that special counselor Robert Mueller has turned his attention to Erik Prince’s January 11, 2017 meeting in the Seychelles with a Russian banker, a Lebanese-American political fixer, and officials from the United Arab Emirates, helps clarify the nature of Mueller’s work. It’s not an investigation that the former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation is leading—rather, it’s a cover-up. After all, Mueller took his job not at the behest of the man who by all accounts he is likely to professionally and personally disdain, Donald Trump, but of the blue-chip Beltway elite of which he is a charter member.

Barack Obama wasn´t kidding when he warned his successor that North Korea is the biggest national security threat the U.S. faces. "No good options" has been the mantra of the deep thinkers, as if we have no choice but to let the Kim dynasty threaten the world with nuclear war from now on. But Donald Trump has never been bound by conventional thinking and brings a healthy skepticism to the pronouncements of the experts who have failed for the past three decades. Such growing efforts to ensure that the physically challenged can easily fly are certainly welcome. But when our plane landed—late and in danger of causing many passengers to miss their connecting flights—most of the 11 wheelchair-bound passengers left their seats unassisted and hurried out. It was almost as if newfound concerns about making connections had somehow improved their health during the flight. Two passengers had boarded with two dogs each. No

The study, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, argues that there’s no such thing as a “straight” man or woman. Rather, people operate on a spectrum. Researchers showed men and women different kinds of pornographic material. Rather than relying on self-reporting, the study looked at physiological responses to the sexual material. Namely pupil dilation, which is a sign of sexual arousal. The study found that women’s eyes dilated when they viewed a man and
