´Believe All Women´ at Your Peril
American Thinker, by David Solway

We´ve heard it all before: "start by believing." "Believe survivors." At a recent panel discussion at the Ottawa City Hall, where my wife, Janice Fiamengo, was one of three featured participants, the subject of #MeToo and "Believe All Women" came up during the Q&A. (See 1:35:34 to 1:38:27 of the embedded YouTube video below.) An audience member claimed that it behooved us in most cases to give credence to women bringing forth their stories of sexual abuse. The young woman was skeptical of the court process as a way of resolving issues of sexual violence in women´s favor and contended

The cumbersome apparatus of the courts?

Okay...let´s just forget about due process and innocent until proven guilty and just hang, literally and/or figuratively, every guy some woman had a bad date with or who wouldn´t go out with her or whose face she didn´t like and go on our merry ways. Women have not completely lost credibility but they´re on their way, particularly when the charges are driven by racial, sexist or economic motives.

There is something deeply distasteful about calling victims of sexual harassment “survivors.“ That is hyperbole. A real survivor is someone who has actually survived an existential threat, not bad words or stolen gropes or job insecurity. Too many liberal women are snowflakes who know little about real survival.

II am most troubled by long-delayed and no longer defendable accusations under the #MeToo banner with the only evidence being the woman´s memories. Maybe we should permit some temporary Truth Commission similar to South Africa´s once upon a time process followed by a new law that penalized aged accusations afterwards. To give these women a time-limited outlet to find their voice and then to effectively shutter it afterwards - just like with most criminal violations of the law, a statute of limitations.

Those who believe anything but their own evaluations of today´s events do so at their own peril. "These are the times that try men´s souls!"

"Believe All Women," taken at face value, looks Orwellian. Right up there with "some animals are more equal than others." It is language intended to veil a power grab, the usual leftist impulse to bring others to heel without question or resistance.

And it expects us to ignore common experience. Seems to me that typically the people who are most skeptical about women are other women. Anyone who has worked in a female-dominated workplace or female-dominated endeavor probably can vouch for this. Either that strand of human nature has suddenly been suspended or annihilated or these young activists are lying through their pussy hats.

The American campaign against Russia´s use of nerve gas on British soil opened in the UN Security Council. Ambassador Nikki Haley held Russia responsible for the attack. "If we don’t take immediate, concrete measures to address this now, Salisbury will not be the last place we see chemical weapons used ... This is a defining moment." Part of Haley´s message was an American threat to counter Russia where its forces and foreign policy were most over-extended: in Syria. “Sixteen days ago, we came to an agreement. Russia cast its vote in favor of the agreement. And with that vote, Russia promised

Genius theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking said some inspirational things in his 76 years, including famously reminding people to “look up at the stars and not down at your feet.” And, no doubt, his entire life’s work, which continued on for decades despite the debilitating symptoms of ALS, is an inspiration. This post, however, isn’t about building you up in all your human specialness. As cosmologists often are, Hawking was a master at making you realize just how tiny and insignificant we are in this vast, sublime universe. Here are a few examples. On the significance of humans, ´an advanced breed

WASHINGTON – Sen. Bill Nelson joined a large rally outside the Capitol in solidarity with the National School Walkout and urged students to "keep on speaking out." "We are grieving in Florida and now you are giving voice to that grief," the Florida Democrat said. "And when you march on March 24, it´s going to be a visible expression of the grief that we´ve been through. "It´s common sense that we should have universal background checks. And it´s common sense that we should get the assault rifles and the banana clips off the streets. Keep on marching and keep on speaking out." But

Renee Converse can still picture her 12-year-old daughter, slim and sun-kissed, waving goodbye out the back window of a Pasco County school bus. It was a Friday and the last time she would see her brown-eyed, firstborn girl. A quarter-century after the murder of Jennifer Odom, her mother remembers how much she loved her Springer spaniel, Gypsy, and how she giggled with a gang of girlfriends while dressing up for a middle school dance. Six days after she disappeared in 1993, detectives located Jennifer’s body — naked, facedown and severely decomposed in a Hernando County orange grove. Since then, they

Italy has long been the political laboratory of the West, creating fascism and eurocommunism, and playing a major role in the creation of the European Union. Its inconclusive national elections on March 4th provide us with a hazy view of the near future: redefinition of traditional politics, and perhaps even of the world at large. The most significant event on election day in Italy came when a young woman, topless for the occasion, confronted 82-year old Silvio Berlusconi at his voting place and pronounced him an irrelevancy. I wonder whom she voted for, although we can certainly be confident it

Televangelists have dominated religious broadcasting for decades with their use of TV to preach gospel into living rooms, some soliciting donations from viewers through one simple phone call in the name of Jesus Christ. Now the Church of Scientology has stepped into the broadcasting arena with Monday evening’s launch of the Scientology Network on DIRECTV’s channel 320, streaming devices like AppleTV and Roku, and apps on iTunes and Google Play. Standing inside the Flag Building in downtown Clearwater, the church’s international spiritual headquarters, Scientology leader David Miscavige greeted viewers at 8 p.m. with a video message, promising the network would reveal the

The Russian crisis has its roots in the Kremlin´s dangerous reliance on oil, crime and nuclear weapons as the cornerstones of its power. By trying to maintain Russia as a superpower on this unstable 3 legged stool Putin has set up a destructive resonance from which it is proving difficult to escape. Rigid sexual orientations have defined the preference of men and women for decades; however, a new study is attempting to do away with strict definitions of sexuality. The study, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, argues that there’s no such thing as a “straight” man or woman. Rather, people operate on a spectrum. Researchers showed men and women different kinds of pornographic material. Rather than relying on self-reporting, the study looked at physiological responses to the sexual material. Namely pupil dilation, which is a sign of sexual arousal. The study found that women’s eyes dilated when they viewed a man and
