(Video) - A tourist helicopter plunged into the East River on Sunday night, killing five passengers who were trapped inside the sinking vessel while the pilot scrambled to safety, police sources said. The Eurocopter AS350 went down around 88th Street, near Gracie Mansion, at about 7:15 p.m., sources said. The pilot got out and climbed aboard a raft, but five others remained trapped inside the capsized and sinking helicopter, according to sources. “There was about a minute where we didn’t see anyone come out, then after a minute we saw a man come out holding onto a raft screaming, ‘Help! help! Sounds like at least 1 survived. On the video it looks like the helicopter landed upright but then began to sink.

Don´t blame the pilot. Capt. Sully´s bird didn´t roll immediately after ditching...if it had, he´d be no hero.

I doubt the tourist helo concession had any sort of egress drill or even discussion with the paying customers - or they would lose more prospective riders than they actually would carry. Ask any Marine or sailor who travel overwater on any helo...the egress training sucks. Imagine being underwater on the dark, upside down in extremis, and trying to remember how to get the door open, let alone swimming to the surface. Oh - with your dear friends.

Don´t blame the pilot. I speak with 30 years of USMC experience... much as a pilot.

My hair is platinum & I´ve earned every bit of it.

Ah, the dreaded "Dilbert Dunker" drill - scary enough in daylight in a pool with rescue folks all around and you´re ready for it!

at dusk unexpected and unprepared frankly I´m surprised the pilot managed to get out.

Full disclosure; I spent a few years chasing bubbles (subs) after the fun and games on the Tonken Gulf - and the only place to land "boots dry" was a postage stamp of a 1052 Class DE out there "somewhere"

The USN trains all Naval Aviators in a device called the Dilbert Dunker. This thing is basically a helicopter cabin that slides down into a pool and flips upside down. They learn to orient themselves, get out and swim to the surface. There are divers standing by to assist. I know a number who have gone through it, and only a few said that they had no trouble. Most, after the classroom training, managed it. Sometimes the divers are needed.

The reason for this training is that it is very difficult to get it right the first time, and when the first time is "the final exam", lots don´t make it.

Sorry for all the deaths, it is not easy to get out of an upside down helo in the water.

First reaction when the torso hits cold water is to inhale under the shock. After being physically stunned by hard impact then shock from cold water envelopment, panic sets in when trying to release the seat belt buckle. By then it´s time too late.

I chuckle inside when the Flight Attendant recites the "in the event of a water landing" portion of the mandatory safety briefing. Even if you do survive, the chances you´ll never make it out of the wreckage without drowning is minuscule.

The "Miracle on the Hudson" was just that. Only in relatively calm water could that ever happen.

Emergency inflatable flotation devices on the skids were deployed, as they should be for an emergency water landing. But, one side failed and this flipped the helo over, and provided too little flotation, so it sank rapidly.

Reports are that a passenger headphone wire entangled a fuel related switch, causing the engine power loss. Apparently the pilot recognized it too late to fix it. If he had a flameout due to fuel cutoff, it would take some time (many seconds) to get reignition and generate power to level off or climb.

Typically, critical switches are mechanically guarded (lift to switch, side rails, etc) to prevent inadvertent activation. Potential design flaw, if this proves to be the case.
