A driver in New Jersey made a fatal mistake when he ignored a road closed barricade Thursday morning and drove on, only to run over live electrical wires downed by this week´s nor´easter storm. As 6ABC in Philly reports, the driver´s SUV erupted into flames in on Summit Avenue and Route 208 in Franklin Lakes just before 9 a.m., as the vehicle hit those live wires. In fact, the inferno was so bad, the driver had not been positively identified as of last reports. Fire totally gutted the vehicle, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation

I thought all of those kind of drivers, (the rules are for everybody else), had all moved down here to Florida. I´m sure we have all the "I´m the only one on the road" type.

"Hold my beer, watch this ..."

Not sure if the driver was drinking, but it does remind me of that comment, which always ends badly.

I´d guess they were from Massachusetts, those are some terrible drivers.

Somehow, I just can´t feel bad for them.

When there are safety warnings on everything (your sun shade for your car tells you to not drive with the sunshade in place), safety warnings become meaningless.

A young friend of our family walked out of his home during a high wind storm and a downed power line flew up and electrocuted him. I will never forget the tragedy. Downed wires are very long and whip around, they do not sit harmless and immobile on the ground. And they are absolutely deadly.

GREAT point @ 6 about overuse of warnings and the meaningless of same. I see stupid, silly, actually detrimental traffic signs constantly, such that one wonders if it´s really something to consider or an over-protective attempt to avoid law suit.

"Bump ahead"---this on a city street at which speeds are low and the bump was never felt or even seen. Who in hell thought a bump ahead sign was warranted. Fire him.

"Damaged Guard Rail Ahead"---which advised to avoid crashing your vehicle in the same spot somebody did last week. Choose another spot down the line, thanks. It proved more of a distraction than a benefit.

Seems very few possess any common sense these days.

I am baffled by the amount of people who still believe that road barricades exist only to inconvenience them. They go around them then demand to be rescued.

This driver lost that battle sorry to say. You ignore warnings at your peril after a storm like the NE has had. Only comfort I would have here is hoping this driver was dead before the fire started.

So then, surely driving over an electrical wire should be perfectly safe. No?

Sad to say, this is likely because of arrogance and the false sense of security some SUV divers feel in inclement weather, the certainty they can go where other cars can´t. Poor decision made and consequences met.

Like many people in Los Angeles, I like detached houses. My family lives in a single-family home that was built in 1923 by a woman from Hollywood. Houses like mine are an important part of L.A.´s built environment, history and housing stock. In a region with a housing shortage and homelessness crisis, all homes are good homes. Somewhere along the way, however, our attachment to single family homes went awry. The year my house was built was the undisputed high point of housing construction in Los Angeles. President Trump’s approval ratings are rising, driven by a roaring economy that has dulled the effects of a White House swarmed by controversies. Republicans remain panicked over their prospects in 2018, with angst growing that the GOP will lose its majority in the House. Yet even as those fears grow, Trump’s numbers are getting better. The Associated Press and CNN released new polls this week showing 42 percent of Americans approve of Trump’s job performance, up seven percentage points each from their surveys last month. With the U.S. Census Bureau reporting yet another year of population loss for the city, it doesn’t take an investigator to determine the causes. The city’s scary record of 343 homicides in 2017 affirms the city’s well-known reputation as a dangerous place to live. Even if 2018 has fewer homicides, it doesn’t take a fortune teller to predict that this year’s homicide rate will be high. Until the city substantially reduces its homicide and other crimes rates, people will continue to view the city as dangerous and be reluctant to stay or move here.
