The Volkswagen Beetle will soon be squashed

Volkswagen is exterminating the Beetle. The automaker’s head of research and development, Frank Welsch, has confirmed that the brand’s iconic compact car will not be replaced when the current model ends production. The executive broke the news to Autocar at the Geneva Motor Show, telling the publication that "two or three generations is enough now." Welsch said that the Beetle was "made with history in mind but you can´t do it five times and have a new new new Beetle".Instead, the VW lineup’s “heritage” slot will be filled by the upcoming electric Microbus, which blends retro styling with a high-tech

Take a letter from Porsche: They have been recycling the 911 for 40 or 50 years.

My first car was a Beetle. Pennsylvania salt took its toll. Almost bought a "New Beetle" last year, but after online research, thought the better of it. You need a mechanic on retainer. Settled on a 2008 Impala, and am glad I did.

And the uned Beetle market just went "Ka_BooM!

What can the Germans be thinking? You have a huge dedicated following. The car completely and perfectly fills a market niche. It is a firmly established brand icon no one else can copy. It simply makes no sense as a marketing move.

Now, if their new electric "Micro bus" proves to be both affordable and actually works as promised, that´s going to be a huge money maker, too. So, from a future practical, and objective business decision, yeah. I can see it. But, I do not understand the outright killing of the Beetle- it just seems so pointless. It´s as if the company considers making the Beetle a kind of bad habit and are trying to go cold turkey.

My Dad bought one in 1954. Black, red leatherette interior, sun roof, no radio. Traded it in the next. $100 and the old car got him a new one, they held value. He did that every year until early 70´s, when they stopped making black paint, because of cost.
I inherited that one, royal blue, drove it for the longest time, loved it.

So the formidable VW Beetle gets electrocuted.
Talk about choosing the wrong path.
This is what happens when you put too many ´green peace´ warriors on the board of R&D.
Electric cars are still a novelty, should I say just glorified golf carts and they kill the Beetle for that.

We´ve owned the Beetle ´classic´ and ´new´ but NOT the ´new-new´ Beetle, after driving one of the first ones in Texas. It was lackluster and a styling turnoff.

VW should have resurrected the old Karmann-Ghia sports coupe/roadster, which to this day is a beautifully styled car, and made a "statement" with a new generation of drivers brought up in their parent´s ´new´ Beetle.

Finally. The new version was an actual car, maybe not that dependable, but at least it was a car. Somehow my wife and I survived the old air cooled Beetle. We had very little money when we started so the Beetle was it. After the first year or two, no heat. Ice on the inside of the windows. Gas tank in front of you with very little steel around it and you. Weird handling, especially if it was windy or wet. Wipers held onto the stub with a friction screw. Pedals blocked by any ice or snow on the floor because they were bottom hinged. Front end beat up from stone chips. Oil leaks from the valve tubes between the block and the cylinder heads so the bottom of the engine was usually oily.

Luckily never in an accident with another car. The good points. It was good in snow with the rear traction. It lasted 125,000 miles. Got good gas mileage even if the engine was dirty emissions wise. I was young when I owned it.

Somehow Ralph missed the VW Beetle when he was crying about the Corvair. My dad had a Corvair and it was a much better car. Even had heat, eventually.

Rudy Giuliani’s love life is causing trouble for the White House. In a move that blindsided the West Wing and sent Hill Republicans into a tizzy, the president’s personal attorney is throwing his support behind an obscure House candidate in Louisiana trying to take out incumbent GOP Rep. Clay Higgins. But the bizarre tale of Giuliani’s interest in an off-the-radar congressional race only begins there. It turns out the ex-New York mayor’s new girlfriend, GOP fundraiser Jennifer LeBlanc, is working for the Republican challenger in the race, Josh Guillory. LeBlanc had been on Higgins’ payroll until late last year when she abruptly

President Trump’s decision to endorse a “zero tolerance” border policy aligns his administration squarely with the populist, anti-immigration movement that has swept Europe and brought hard-right leaders to power amid an unprecedented wave of global migration. As Trump this week defended his administration’s border security strategy by warning that lax immigration laws are “destroying our country,” Italy’s new interior minister, Matteo Salvini, was announcing plans to conduct a national census with the aim of deporting ethnic Roma who had not attained citizenship. This comes after the Italian government this month blocked a rescue ship carrying hundreds of migrants from docking in

Amid the Trump administration´s crackdown on illegal immigration, thousands of children were separated from their families, while parents were prosecuted under a "zero-tolerance" policy. On Wednesday afternoon, Donald Trump signed an executive order that he said would keep immigrant families at the border together "while ensuring we have a powerful, very strong border." From May, when the policy was enacted, through June 9, almost 2,300 children have been separated from their parents, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Those children have been placed in the custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement under the Department of Health and Human Services,

When the Justice Department inspector general´s report revealed that former FBI director James B. Comey had used a personal email account to conduct official business, Hillary Clinton claimed vindication. "But my emails," she tweeted. Yes, Madam Secretary, your emails. In fact, the overlooked bombshell of the report is the inspector general´s confirmation that classified information contained in Clinton´s emails was in fact compromised by foreign intelligence services, and that Clinton had recklessly emailed President Barack Obama using her unsecured personal email from the territory of a hostile foreign adversary. Despite the sprawl of Justice Department inspector general Michael Horowitz’s 568-page report on the Clinton-emails investigation, there is precious little discussion of the most important issue: The Justice Department and FBI’s rationale for declining to prosecute Hillary Clinton. I believe this is intentional. The inspector general’s message is: “Despite pervasive political bias and investigative irregularities, which I have comprehensively documented, rest assured that nothing too terrible happened here.” That silver-lining version of this dark spectacle could not have survived a searching analysis of the decision not to indict. President Donald Trump, under pressure from angry members of his own party, signed on Wednesday an executive order that is meant to keep families together at the border, halting a policy he instituted earlier this year. "It´s about keeping families together while ensuring we have a powerful border," Trump said of the order. Trump said the order "will solve that problem" of children being separated from their parents, but that it wouldn´t end his administration´s "zero tolerance" policy of charging everyone who attempts to cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally, a decision that led to the current crisis.
