The new ‘Death Wish’ movie is sure to
create a huge conversation on gun
violence-- and it won´t be pretty

A new iteration of the vigilante movie "Death Wish" opens on Friday, and hoo boy, is it going to explode like no other movie in recent memory. The movie, starring Bruce Willis as Paul Kersey (a role that revived the long career of Charles Bronson back in the ´70s), was set for release in November 2017, but was delayed until this Friday. There was no way to know a mass shooting – one in which police and mental health authorities utterly failed to protect young students gunned down in a Florida school – would suddenly change the tone and tenor

Loved the Charles Bronson movies. Love Bruce Willis so imagine I will love this movie too.
It taps into something many of us feel---sometimes you just have to get the bad guys.

Judging from the left´s increasing propensity for violence, Death Wish could end up being a training film.

Per an online dictionary:"Vigilante: a member of a self-appointed group of citizens who undertake law enforcement in their community without legal authority, typically because the legal agencies are thought to be inadequate."

Self defense is a completely different matter. If a bad guy is in the act of threatening someone with a weapon using deadly force against said bad guy is not vigilantism, but self defense. Going after the bad guy after the fact is vigilantism. Big Difference.

I saw the trailer. Looked good. The leftists will hate it.

Cool.

Does that mean I want to do it? No, I have the skills, the guns, could do it. But I am a law abiding citizen and I won´t.

I hope that the lack of police protection stays as some far-away fantasy, so I can stay a law abiding citizen.

Self defense and vigilantism might be technically different. But when the victims of violent crime become helpless and exposed due to inaction and incompetence of the state, intetervening on their behalf at risk to one´s own life becomes a higher calling.

A couple of people touched on why this movie is important. As usual, liberals miss the real message. The message is that if the government refuses to maintain order and to punish those who bring harm to others, sooner or later, the people will start to do it themselves. It is one thing when the occasional bad actor gets away with it because the government cannot prove its case. It is quite another when the government stacks the system so that it is impossible to bring any bad actors to justice within the system.

Vigilante porn (as Curl called it) has a definite appeal to those who believe, as many did in 1974, that crime in some if not most urban areas is way out of control, and that it´s past time for the bad guys doing the crimes to fear for their own lives.

Bronson´s five Death Wish movies were savagely entertaining; I own them all on DVD, and look forward to Bruce Willis´s Dr. Kersey.

Looking at Bronson´s bloody film quintet, I would have to say that the first one in 1974 was the best, the most real. Dismissed by critics as caricatures of the original, "2" and "3" featured the sounds of Led Zeppelin´s Jimmy Page with his echoey, spooky guitar chimes just before main action, or his loud, ascending synthesizer warnings ("OooowwwAAAAAAH!") when Kersey´s bland mask was about to drop.

#3 was, frankly, ridiculous, which is why I loved it! In that movie you hear such classic lines as: "They killed the Giggler, man! THEY KILLED THE GIGGLER!!" and "Chicken´s good. I like chicken."

In "3" Kersey eventually abandons his mail order Wildey Magnum (a long-barreled pistol with a shortened version of a big game rifle cartridge) for a World War II machine gun with long belts of ammo used against huge mobs of young gangsters, mowing them down like Johnson grass. The leader of the criminal gang in "3" was, get this, Mandy Fraker. In the final scene he gets blown out of a window with a LAWS missile. Oh, Mandy!

I saw the first Death Wish on my first Naval deployment. That was back before the first Gulf War. In a way it reinforced in this then 20 year old that sometimes bad guys need killing nothing more nothing less. If anyone can pull of this new movie it´s Wills. His Die Hard movies were also a great staple on my various deployments and if you haven´t seen it rent Tears of the Sun. That´s one of the best Navy Seal movies around. Loved Bronson and like I said Wilis is the man. Also if this causes the leftists heartburn then that´s a great added bonus.

Re #21: That memorable quote, spoken by Paul Kersey to Stomper, the punk wearing the cross necklace, played by Kevyn Major Howard (who was also in Full Metal Jacket and the fourth Dirty Harry movie, Sudden Impact; I think he´s a producer now), was from Death Wish II: mindless entertaining extermination of two-legged rats. Another good two lines of dialogue were (H/T imdb.com):

Inspector Lt. Mankiewicz: Let me get this straight... you and your wife were attacked by four muggers and then all of a sudden this guy comes out from nowhere and begins shooting, killing these two here... and you don´t know what he looks like?

Vigilance Committees get a bad name, but in actual historical fact, most were very reasonable and solved legal problems effectively and relatively fairly in the absence of law enforcement.

The situation posited in the movies is a lack of effective law enforcement, so the vigilante takes up where law enforcement fails to act.

He does a good job, kills the right folks, gets a thumbs up from me. Same result, different means, why complain.

Forty-two percent of Americans, a plurality in a new CBS poll, feel optimistic about the future of the economy. Only 33 percent are pessimistic, and it´s thanks to President Trump´s policies, the respondents noted. Sixty-eight percent of those surveyed answered that Trump´s policies are responsible for the improving economy - 35 percent of whom said his policies had a "great deal" to do with it. Tax reform was likely a big driver of Americans´ optimism. In February, a poll from The New York Times and SurveyMonkey found that a majority (51 percent) had a favorable view of the Republican effort.

The White House´s daily on-camera briefing with reporters is worth rethinking and has become "more of a show," said former press secretary Sean Spicer. The briefing, which he led during his tenure in the Trump administration, has become too much of a "show" for TV reporters and less about information for the public, Spicer said Sunday in an interview on C-SPAN.
