´Shock´ and ´heartbreak´ after adopted

Last summer, Leon Davis cared for dozens of squirming piglets after a rescue operation in Duncan, B.C. One of the 57 animals the Nanaimo SPCA branch manager nursed back to health was Molly, a Vietnamese pot-bellied pig who finally found her forever home last month. But just weeks after the adoption, Davis heard the news: Molly had been butchered and eaten by her new owner after problems were reported with the little pig. "First reaction I´d say was shock. Heartbreak. You know, all the animals that come through our care or branches we get attached to," Davis said. "To hear that somebody did this

Reminds me of an old joke:

A visitor noticed the family had a three legged pig. "Yes, the pig is a hero," explained the owner, "he saved our entire family´s life."
"Did he lose the leg in his effort?" the visitor inquired.
"No, but you don´t eat a pig like that all at once."

It is a pig. It´s highest and best use is to eat it. It really has no other redeeming virtues (exception made for Ralph, the diving pig that used to perform at Aquarena Springs in San Marcos, Texas). That being said, some people believe it is bad form to eat something that had a name. I have no such qualms. A friend of ours feeds out a couple of calves every year, selected from the many calves dropped during the previous calving season. They always name them as they care for them. The one they have going now is T-Bone, prior calf was Dead Man Walking (who was quite good, I must say) etc. Every piece of bacon you eat used to be a cute little piglet at some point.

Why get so emotionally attached over farm animals? They are not household pets unless you are from the Clintons home town. A “forever home”? Give me a freakin break ok. Give it an endearing sweet angelic girls name and dare anyone to turn it into pork loin roasts, bacon, shanks, baby back ribs, and smoked pork butt.

Every Steer we have ever raised and slaughtered has had a name. That is how we refer to the meat when deciding what to eat. I think of it as a tribute. chickens are different. I just call them *%&$@# chickens.

I´ll be just a semi-Devil´s advocate here. I, too, was raised on a farm and on a ranch where we raised and then shipped out to slaughter goats, cattle and sheep. We never raised pigs. But my husband raised hogs for 4-H as a youngster and he says (and it´s backed up by experts) that a pig is smarter than most dogs and can be trained easily. They are very intelligent and they (contrary to popular assumption) don´t like being dirty. They prefer clean water to get wet.
I still enjoy ham and bacon and I try not to think about the intelligent little animal who supplied them.

Some of the initial comments here are pretty callous----shame on them. There should be laws to protect PETS, for God´s sake. I wish the people could be prosecuted and don´t understand why they can´t. Here in Ct. we had an idiot in a new expensive home build a blind in a tree in a yard and shoot young bear cubs---some hero. HE was brought to court, but I think he got off. But I sincerely hope that HE, and these people with the pig, are absolutely shunned by their neighbors forever.

An old joke:

A city boy visits a Cajun in Louisiana, and the Cajun says "I have the smartest pig in the world, a three-legged pig!" The Cajun says "Pig, how much is three times two?" The pig taps his foot six times.

After several more tests of the pig´s intelligence, the city boy asks the obvious question, "By the way, what happened to the pig´s leg?"

The Cajun replies, "A pig that smart, you don´t eat him all at once!"

When Rob Holcombe and his husband bought a studio on Hawaii’s Big Island in 2015, they knew it was in an active volcano zone. But the Berkeley, Calif., couple had fallen in love with the place and gambled that molten lava would stay away from the forested getaway overlooking the Pacific that Mr. Holcombe describes as a “Garden of Eden.” “We figured we could get insurance, and it was worth the risk,” said the 52-year-old computer programmer. The couple did get insurance, but it won’t cover much lava damage. Their second home is one of hundreds threatened by renewed eruption at Hawaii’s Kilauea

The Senate Ethics Committee offered a brutal rebuke of New Jersey Sen. The committee, with Georgia Sen. Advocates in the field argue that the Earth needs to be treated with love. In addition to reducing harmful environmental practices, ecosexuals believe that humans should physically make love to the Earth.
