Jeff Flake to introduce bill to raise
minimum age to purchase assault
rifle to 21 years old

Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., is working with Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., on a new bill that raises the minimum age to buy assault rifles such as an AR-15 to 21 years old, he said Wednesday. “A kid too young buy a handgun should be too young to buy an #AR15. Working with @SenFeinstein on a bipartisan bill that will raise the minimum purchase age for non-military buyers from 18 to 21 - the same age you currently have to be to purchase a handgun,” Flake tweeted. (Tweet) Under federal law, the minimum age to buy a handgun is 21, and the

I challenge him to define what he wants to control.

Removing the military styling does nothing to change the fact that a semi-automatic rifle can be fired rapidly, even with a wooden stock, no bayonet lug, no flash hider.

Do the "Indy Pace Car" paint, logos, wings, hood scoops and wide tires make a car into a real racing car? No. They are just styling. Same for "semi-auto assault rifles" - they are not assault rifles, just ordinary rifles with military styling features.

This Flake is stupid.

This is great news! I can now buy an "assault" rifle. I always wanted my own, personal M-16.

I think Jeff Flake meant to say he wanted to raise the age to purchase scary-looking guns.

Mitch and Ryan put him up to it. Romney will step up and endorse it and MCCain and Graham will Co sponsor it. However it will not pass because Democrats don’t want it to pass. They want it to be a campaign issue. No talk of providing grants to states for school districts to implement new school safety and security systems such as armed guards and other options. No way, we can’t do that!

I completely support this.
Mental illness often doesn’t manifest in sufficiently outward ways until late teens or early 20s.

There is NO downside to this, and our side of the debate should support and get ahead of this curve.

Well then expect new lines of semi-automatic rifles to come out lacking the scary looking stuff along with the scary stuff upgrade kits sold primarily as 21st birthday gifts. I´m going to trademark SSU-21.

The voting age should be 30. I´ll budge down to 21 for those in the armed forces. Some of the reasons 18 to 20 year olds are perfect for turning into soldiers are the exact reasons they shouldn´t vote.

ps: This is not an either/or circumstance… We can and should have armed guards at school and better mental health screening, and peer programs, and an end to the ridiculous Obama-era rules that allow a black and Hispanic kids to get “do-overs” and no criminal record for crimes that white and Asian kids would get a record for (which is why this psycho Cruz slipped through the cracks; his adoptive last name). And we can also have an array other gun training for all kids and productive and other defense of technologies as well. And we can and should have a conversation about the debasement and video violence of our national culture. We should do ALL of this.

And this specific thing is definitely the right thing to do. We don’t let kids rent cars until they’re 25 and 25-year-olds can still be on their parents health insurance. Life comes in stages and the frontal cortex is not developed, particularly in young men, until they’re in their mid 20s. Mental illness and suicidal/homicidal tendencies would more likely have “shown” to authorities by Cruz’ 20s ... and this HORRIBLE atrocity could have neen avoided.

As for enlisting in the military… There are batteries of psychological tests to enlist and mentor support in the military in case someone is having violent thoughts of harming them self or harming others. So the obvious answer is: if you wish to enlist in the military at 18 and go through the training and psychological testing — and pass — you will exempt from the rule anyone else has to be 21 or 23 or 25 to have rifles with such easily changed large magazines and such little recoil.

This is absolutely the right thing to do.

Poster #1 is exactly right. And, by the way, the AR in AR-15 does not stand for Assault Rifle. It stands for the name of the company that designed and manufactured the weapon, Armalite.

AR-15’s are not assault rifles. No modern military would ever issue a single shot rifle to their soldiers. Think M-16 or AK47, both can fire full auto.

Do it!

And, while you´re at it, raise the age to vote to 21 too.

After all, read recently most don´t consider themselves an "adult" until they are 24 anyhow. If that´s the case, then why should those 18, 19 and 20 year-old be voting for tax increases and making adult decisions if they themselves don´t consider themselves an adult?

There is no way that a bill will pass Congress listing just one model of rifle like an AR-15. In order to raise the age to buy such a rifle that the Democrats define as being an "Assault Rifle" because of it resembles in outward appearance true assault rifles used by the military, they will have to raise up the age to buy all semi-automatic rifles and shotguns. As the AR-15 rifle and its knockoffs are the most popular rifles in America today, they mechanically function just about like every other modern semi-automatic rifle in America today.

The term "AR-15" is a trade mark of the Colt´s Manufacturing Company that manufactured and sold the original and now improved AR-15 rifle. Today there are probably a hundred knock-offs of the AR-15, that are not called AR-15´s, some that do not even look like the AR-15, that are being manufactured by different firearms manufacturers. So if Congress were to pass a law that only affected the Colt manufactured AR-15 rifle, the only rifle called an AR-15, and not all other firearms that functionally operate similar to the Colt AR-15, the bill Congress passes would probably be challenged as an unconstitutional bill of attainer against the Colt Manufacturing Company. Who actually knows, at this juncture, if the Florida shooter even used an actual AR-15 or some yet unidentified knock off.br>
What the Democrats and some wimpy Republicans like Flake really want is to effectively ban all modern firearms that are being sold in America today. So if they can´t get enough political cover from the Republicans to do that, look for whatever inferior bill they actually propose to contain enough poison pills to keep the bill from being passed by Congress or to keep Trump from signing it, so the Democrats can keep using gun control as an issue on into the future.

Flake is a moron.

Many rifles function just like the AR-15 which is NOT an assault weapon. If the AR is blocked people would just buy a different rifle. Then they would want those banned.

Meanwhile, it doesn´t fix the problem because it has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE GUN! The AR-15 has been sold for over 50 years. The only reason it pops up in mass shootings is that it is a popular rifle, especially after the ban in 1994 - 2004.

It´s like pointing out that GM or Toyota cars are used most often as robbery getaway cars and wanting to ban them to reduce robberies without noting that these brands are the most sold cars and that robberies have NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CAR BRAND or the car at all.

Liberals are always looking to get their noses under the tent, looking to eliminate guns completely.

So you are willing to let an 18 year old enlist in the military, train him to use a REAL battle weapon (not an AR-15 which is NOT an "assault rifle") accept that he or she may DIE in defense of YOUR comfortable freedom - and he is ONLY a Second Class citizen whose constitutional rights you have chosen to deny him when he is HOME ON LEAVE?

BTW No. 18, AR-15 is no more a trademark any more, than is Kleenex. Everyone uses it and it denotes a platform and operating system. I assure you it will not be limited to Colt.

By the way, Colt is NOT the original manufacturer, nor did they originate the name. Eugene Stoner designed the firearm which was produced by ArmaLite Industries. And it was the 15th iteration of his design efforts. Hence ARmalite-15. The company was sold in the 60s - several times.

Poster #24 is right. I met the original designers of the Armalite (M-16) rifle well before it became a military issue "assault" rifle back in 1962 at the Association of the US Army Convention at Washington, DC. At the time the basic issue rifle for the army was the M-14 rifle that could be set up to fire either semi automatically or fully automatic. Most were set up to fire semi automatically for the sake of accuracy and to save ammunition. At the time I believe their company was called Armalite and the rifle was then called the Armalite rifle. They had a display there and were still trying to sell the rifle to the US Army. I believe the problem for Armalite was that they did not have the funds or the manufacturing facilities to mass produce that rifle if the army did order it, Colt did.

What is an assault rifle? Those scary looking things with black plastic stocks you see the SWAT teams waving around? A M-1A (M-14 semi-auto copy made by Springfield) with a wooden stock looks like an old-fashioned rifle - but it fires a .308 bullet, a lot more power than your regular AR-type gun in .223, which is the AR´s usual caliber. Heck, you can get an old Remington Woodsmaster, a semi-auto deer rifle from the 1950s that shoots the same .30-06 round that carried the U.S. through WWII, and you can get 10 round magazines for those. MUCH more power than a standard AR-type in .223. Or, if you like the .223 round, you can get a Ruger Mini-14, which is a scaled-down version of the military M-14, which shoots the .223 round, for which you can get a 30 round magazine. Every bit as deadly, just as big a magazine as the AR, but in a nice, old fashioned wooden stock. Of course, you CAN get the black or tan plastic stock in aftermarket, which is lighter, and make it scary-looking if you want. And if you want volume of shots vs. power, you can get the Ruger 10/22, which shoots a .22 LR round, which comes with a standard 10 round mag, but you can find 100 round magazines for those. You can even find the aftermarket stock to make it look scary! So what are you going say they can´t buy? Personally, I´ve got no problem with raising the rifle-buying age, but if you allow them to start limiting, you know they won´t STOP there.

I use to agree with you #5, but things have changed. The newer generations have become snowflakes with little knowledge of the real world and have a serious lack of maturity for their age. While an 18 to 21 yr old today may have a strong physical presence, they often lack intelligence to handle things that require discipline and common sense.

Also get rid of schools as gun-free zones (aka targets). And for the cherry on top, maybe begin to recognize again the importance of Dad in his son´s upbringing.

On a related note, I see that the amorphous, made-up political term ´assault weapon´ is being abandoned by the grabbers and their "news" outlet mouthpieces. Going ever more flagrantly mendacious, they have apparently decided to label scary-looking semi-autos as outright "assault rifles", a term which actually has a specific meaning which does not include semi-auto only rifles. They don´t care any more, they are just going to call them "assault rifles" and "machine guns" anyway, evidently.

Anti gun politicians want to raise the age for a civilian person to be a qualified firearms purchaser to 21 years of age, while a person can enlist in the military at age 17 and be qualified to carry and operate some of the most deadly firearms in the world, including real assault rifles. While some Democrat college professors are now calling for the voting age to be lowered to the age of 16 so that very impressionable and know nothing teenagers who don’t have a clue about how the world turns, and who are being influenced by leftist teachers and popular teen culture can vote. Don’t think everything these days is about securing a political edge, think again!

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump says Air Force One is getting a patriotic makeover. The president made the announcement in a CBS News interview broadcast Tuesday. President Trump says he wondered, after reaching a deal with Boeing for the new aircraft, whether to stick with the baby blue color that’s recognized worldwide. He says he decided against it. Rand Paul (R-KY) reacted to comments from former CIA Director John Brennan, who called Trump’s performance at a press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin treasonous. Paul said, “You know John Brennan started out his adulthood by voting for the Communist Party presidential candidate. He is now ending his career by showing himself to be the most biased, bigoted, over-the-top, hyperbolic, sort of unhinged director of the CIA we have ever had. It really is an insult to everything about our government to have a former head of the CIA calling the

To beat President Trump, Democrats running for the White House need to be much more proactive in taking on the president, say party strategists critical of contenders who they see as too reactive rather than proactive. Democrats are good at offering strong responses to Trump, but they aren’t taking the fight to him, the strategists say. “I haven’t seen one potential candidate who is willing to punch him square in the face,” one top Democratic strategist said. “And that’s what we need to do. You can’t win a race against this guy by being graceful or by waiting to be

At least two Congressional Democrats want President Trump’s interpreter to testify about his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. So curious are Democrats to learn what was said in Monday’s private meeting between Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin — there were no other officials in the room; only each man’s translator — that Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and Rep. Joe Kennedy III have each made the unusual request. “I’m calling for a hearing with the U.S. interpreter who was present during President Trump’s meeting with Putin to uncover what they discussed privately. This interpreter can help determine what @POTUS shared/promised Putin

Former CIA Director John Brennan continued Tuesday to criticize President Trump’s performance at the Helsinki summit, saying Mr. Trump could have potentially risked intelligence capabilities during his private meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the intel community might begin to withhold intelligence from Mr. Trump. In light of Mr. Trump’s comments about the intelligence community, Mr. Brennan said “there very well might be” a shift in the covert community to “withhold vital intelligence” in order to protect that information. “Dan Coats and Gina Haspel need to be on top of their game now and speak truth to power,” he

Former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney tore into President Trump on Monday after Trump challenged the intelligence community´s assessment that Russia meddled in the 2016 election, calling Trump´s behavior "disgraceful and detrimental to our democratic principles." Romney´s comments came hours after Trump held a joint news conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland, in which he questioned whether Russia was behind efforts to meddle in the 2016 election. "President Trump´s decision to side with Putin over American intelligence agencies is disgraceful and detrimental to our

Chicago may soon become the largest municipality in the U.S. to test a universal basic income program. Chicago alderman Ameya Pawar recently proposed legislation that would provide 1,000 families with a $500 monthly stipend -- no questions asked. The bill already has the backing of the majority of city lawmakers, and Pawar hopes to soon work with Mayor Rahm Emanuel to implement the pilot program, The Intercept reported. “Nearly 70 percent of Americans don’t have $1,000 in the bank for an emergency,” Pawar told the outlet. “UBI could be an incredible benefit for people who are working and are having

Reines was joined at the protest by current Hillary political adviser Adam Parkhomenko, who said Trump-hating porn star attorney Michael Avenatti would be at the White House to protest Tuesday night. Former FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday said “history has its eyes on us” and encouraged Americans to vote for Democrats in the upcoming midterm elections. Comey, who was fired by President Donald Trump in May 2017, issued a tweet urging Americans to snub Republicans this November. “This Republican Congress has proven incapable of fulfilling the Founders’ design that ‘Ambition must … counteract ambition,’” tweeted the former FBI director, a longtime supporter of Republicans. “All who believe in this country’s values must vote for Democrats this fall. There is an American besides President Donald Trump who was privy to the two-hour private meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin – a government translator who sat in on the entire meeting. Marina Gross, a State Department translator, was pictured along with Trump, Putin, and Putin´s translator at their Helsinki summit. Interest in her role has only grown, after furious critics accused Trump of ´treason´ for failing to push Putin publicly in any way at their Helsinki summit. It was after that meeting that Trump emerged only to engage in a disastrous press conference where he took Putin´s denial of election interference over

JOHANNESBURG — Without ever mentioning President Donald Trump by name, former U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday took aim at “strongman politics” in his highest-profile speech since leaving office, urging people around the world to respect human rights and other values now under threat in an impassioned address marking the 100th anniversary of anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela’s birth. Obama’s speech to a cheering crowd of thousands in South Africa countered many of Trump’s policies, rallying people around the world to keep alive the ideas that Mandela worked for including democracy, diversity and tolerance. Was Russia´s effort to interfere in the 2016 election the most important issue on the table at President Trump´s Helsinki summit with Vladimir Putin? No. But it´s not an unimportant issue, either, and Trump knew the American press is obsessed with it. So he knew it would play a big role in the Trump-Putin post-summit news conference. There are all sorts of aspects to the Trump-Russia affair, but in light of special counsel Robert Mueller´s decision to indict 12 Russian intelligence agents on the Friday before the Monday summit, the president also knew reporters would want to hear him specifically affirm

JOHANNESBURG - Barack Obama said on Tuesday the world should resist cynicism over the rise of strongmen, in an apparent reference to populist leaders who hold power in a number of countries. The Democratic former U.S. president did not name his Republican successor, Donald Trump, but the speech was among the most pointed comments he has made about politics since leaving office in January 2017.
