Westminster Dog Show 2018: And the
winner is ... Flynn the bichon

Flynn the bichon frise won best in show at the 142nd Westminster Kennel Club dog show on Tuesday night, topping other contenders like Slick the border collie and a pug named Biggie. The choice was a surprise to most of the crowd at Madison Square Garden, with many fans falling silent when the 5-year-old white powder puff was picked. Flynn also beat out Ty the giant schnauzer, Bean the Sussex spaniel, Lucy the borzoi, and Winston the Norfolk terrier. Bill McFadden, the dog´s handler, began showing the breed at the competition in 1991, the New York Times reported. "It feels a little unreal," McFadden said.

Found a great little Norfolk Terrier mix at our local SPCA 10 years ago. Miss Lili owned us for a good 8 years. The greatest dog ever.

Of course, I must now go back and watch "Best In Show" yet again. Fred Williard´s ´commentary´ during the show is a scream.

"We have you down for two queens."
"What are you saying, my good man?"

The bichon was a pretty ho-hum choice.

I was hoping for Bean, although he was not up to Stump’s level when it came to Sussex Spaniel charm. Would also have liked to see that great Border Collie win.

Our Bichon looks nothing like the one that won. We (mainly my wife) realized early on that long hair requires a lot of time, work and expense to maintain. So, we have the dog groomed with a close cut (except ears and tail) about every 4-6 weeks. Even at that, the ears, especially, still require a lot of work to prevent knots. I can´t imagine how much work it takes to produce this winner. Our dog is very much my wife´s dog - until she picks up the comb. Then, the dog seems anxious to come to me to get away from that comb.

The tall man who squired Flynn the Bichon around had his comb going so frequently that you began to think Flynn could never be seen without either his handler nor his comb.

Stylized dogs do nothing for me. (And what about the pink stains running down from his eyes?)

Bean or the Border Collie - real dogs. I’ve never seen such a well-show-trained Border Collie These dogs are amazing in the field. This one was also a winner at standing still without having to be restrained by the handler. The handler was able to stand aside and let the dog stand alone … I loved that.

It is easy to corrupt the greedy man. It is another to corrupt a heroic man. Yet within each of us lurks a dark corner that, unless we implore God to shine His light into it, can corrupt us. If anyone doubts this, consider the tragic story of Randall "Duke" Cunningham. For those who may not know enough about him, here is an excerpt from Wikipedia: Cunningham was an officer and pilot in the U.S. Navy for 20 years. Cunningham and Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) William P. "Irish" Driscoll, working as a flight crew, became the only navy flying aces
