The Real Mardi Gras

Debauchery. Bacchanalia. Floats, costumes, beads and masks, and lots of drinking and partying. That’s what we think of when we hear the term Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday. There is a lot more behind it. Also called Shrove Tuesday, it marks the last day of the liturgical calendar before Lent begins. After Catholicism spread throughout Europe, many cultures celebrated the final day before Lent began in ways unique to that individual culture. eggs, and milk were finished off in one day, giving rise to the term Fat Tuesday. In Poland, such things as lard, sugar, eggs, and fruit were forbidden during

I give up all sweets, which is a real struggle because I have the world’s biggest sweet tooth. (Life is uncertain, eat dessert first!) Today I’m finishing off the honey roasted peanuts, the chocolate and the pecan pralines. It’s going to be a looooooong 40 days!

I give up the New Year´s resolution. Just kidding. In some countries is called Carnaval or Carnevale which in latin means Carne (meat) Vale (going) so, something like the meat goes away. It makes sense.

When I was a small child in Erie, PA 60 years ago, everybody got their ashes on Ash Wednesday, Catholics or not. It was just the thing. And a good reminder that we are mortl and had best be prepared to meet our Judge and Maker. Because you never know...

Still, it´s strange that it comes on Valentines Day this year:

"Remember, Valentine, that thou art dust, and unto dust thou shalt return."

Just a thought.
Go to the parade, drink to excess, party hearty, engage in all sorts of debauchery, knowing (or at least thinking) you´ll have 40 days to repent. On the way back to where you´re staying just at 11:59 p.m. you´re involved in a fatal crash and you´re the "fatal". What do you say to St. Peter when he opens the book of judgement?
I had good intentions.
I really was gonna repent.
A case of the eternal whoops.
I happened to be there once in 1979, yeah it´s rather "interesting"

#4,it is all to do with moon. Since Easter is a moveable feast, Lent and Easter are early this year, their dates are related to the phase of the moon. St. Valentine´s day falls on the 14th come what may. Be a little temperate with the indulgences of the day, Valentine was one of the good guys and espousing loving one another is important to our Lord.

I am a Texan and non-Catholic living in Louisiana. I abhor Mardi Gras!
I don´t understand why the priests don´t speak out about the turning of a "religious event" into debauchery and evil that is unparalleled during the rest of the year. If they had any concern about their congregations´ sin, they would tell them to just skip both lent and Mardi Gras. Surely they don´t think the drunkeness, nudity and sex in public... gets all cleared up by giving up chocolate for a few days! God would surely say, "just keep your pants on and eat your chocolate".

It´s beginning to be glaringly apparent that those on the left cannot recognize the absurd double standard that exists in almost everything they say. On one day, a specific kind of logic applies to one scenario. Then, the next day, those same people mock the logic that was offered as gospel the day before.Take for instance the liberal notion that stricter gun laws prevent mass shootings. If that´s true, then why do the same individuals who demand restrictions on gun ownership also claim that if access to abortion is limited, women looking to terminate a pregnancy will find a way

Much like the liberal media did during the height of the tea party movement, looking to blame participants for every bad deed in America, there was a rush to connect the 19-year-old shooter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL, to President Donald Trump. Turns out, the true Trump supporter was one of the heroes who was shot and killed when, according to the students he saved, he placed his body between the sick killer and children in harm’s way. The problem of mass violence in the U.S. is more a reflection of contempt for the sanctity of human life than of a love for gun ownership. In a society that reveres human life, gun ownership isn´t a chronic problem. People who genuinely believe in the sanctity of human life won´t take another life - by gun or any other means - unless it is absolutely necessary. Not so in a society that views human life as subjective and revocable. In a society that condones, funds, and promotes abortion and excuses euthanasia, human life is cheap. When a woman has a

Everyone knows that this decision is lousy for city kids, especially those most in need of top instructors. In hindsight, though, it was also inevitable: the rules that govern public schools are designed to look out for the interests of adults, not children. The ATR is an example of what happens when commonsense reforms run up against an inflexible system. Revelations that the FBI had been warned about Florida high school shooter Nikolaus Cruz fit an all-too-familiar pattern, in which apparent law enforcement errors have preceded mass murders. The FBI was warned about Cruz after he posted on YouTube saying he was going to become a “professional school shooter.” The agency said they couldn’t identify the user who made the threat, despite Cruz posting under his own name. Five months later, Cruz pulled the fire alarm at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and began shooting his former classmates with his AR-15. Other mass shooters and terrorists were similarly on the FBI’s radar
