The director of national intelligence said Tuesday the background check process for security clearances for White House staff is “broken.”Dan Coats did not name anyone specifically, but the response was during a Senate Committee Hearing when he was questioned about former White House staff secretary Rob Porter. Porter resigned last week over abuse allegations from his ex-wives, and it was revealed he had access to sensitive and classified information while working with only an interim security clearance. The background check process is “broken and needs to be reformed," Coats said. “Sometimes it is necessary to have some type of preliminary clearance in

FTA...There is a reported backup of roughly 700,000 background checks for security clearance.

Seriously? And what the heck is FBI doing? Sending love notes, assisting on fraud special council and.....?

Nothing new. Remember FBI agent Gary Aldrich’s book about the Clinton WH where they didn’t even bother to apply for security clearances and almost no one had one?

Have you noticed, over time, that "broken" has become an all-purpose buzzword to describe any government function run by complacent bureaucrats who exist in an insulated culture and know they are effectively fire-proof?

FBI background checks have been a problem for decades if not forever.

I worked on a project for the DoD to try to fix the background check problem during the Bush years. We tried to streamline the process, but it essentially defied fixing. Too few people in the certificate management process, too few field investigators, too many security clearance requests.

We were able to get the DoD security clearance backlog under some semblance of control and timeliness, but then OMB took over and merged the DoD and the OPM offices into one operation under OPM.

We had the DoD background check backlog down to a few thousand. The current 700,000 is a product of the Obama administration.

Everything in Washington is "broken". Then why do we keep sending money? Let me guess, your solution is more money, more bureaucrats, more regulations.
If people like Hillary and her Huma get top secret clearance, why not give everybody top secret clearance and stop wasting time and money?

It is easy to corrupt the greedy man. It is another to corrupt a heroic man. Yet within each of us lurks a dark corner that, unless we implore God to shine His light into it, can corrupt us. If anyone doubts this, consider the tragic story of Randall "Duke" Cunningham. For those who may not know enough about him, here is an excerpt from Wikipedia: Cunningham was an officer and pilot in the U.S. Navy for 20 years. Cunningham and Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) William P. "Irish" Driscoll, working as a flight crew, became the only navy flying aces
