Republicans consider the unthinkable:
A gas tax increase to pay for infrastructure

Washington Examiner, by Josh Siegel

Original Article

Posted By:KarenJ1, 2/12/2018 9:39:12 AM

Republicans are weighing whether to raise the federal gas tax. It´s an idea they are prone to hate, but they may need it to pay for President Trump’s infrastructure investment plan. Supporters of the idea note that the tax hasn’t been raised since 1993 and have plenty of evidence that resistance to a hike is wearing down. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce recently called for the Trump administration and Congress to raise the gas tax by 25 cents per gallon to help pay for an infrastructure package, projecting it would generate more than $375 billion over a decade. For 25

Comments:
Talk about insane and tone deaf! If they do this and grant amnesty to the ´dreamers,´ they can kiss their rear ends goodbye and welcome a Democrat congress that will impeach Trump. You know if the Chamber of Commerce is involved it is NOT GOOD. The two congressmen proposing this are Bill Shuster chairman of the committee is from PA and Thomas Massie of KY. Cronyn and Barasso on the senate side are against it. As if suggesting a gas tax isn´t bad enough Massie and Tom Reed of NY suggested a tax on miles driven. They sound like Democrats!

First they need to make sure they are NOW spending the gasoline tax $$$ on infrastructure. The problem is they move $$$ around to places that the gasoline taxes were not intended for. If they had spend the $$$ on the roads etc they would have all the $$$ they need.

There are probably 100 billion a year in waste and forgotten legislation that could be gleaned. Congress should really start mining these outdated spending lines and get the money that way. They always keep coming up with new spending and they never, ever close out old spending that is no longer needed or is now out of date or abandoned.

If they set up a "General Legislation for Old Money Salvage" (GLOMS) then they would have their infrastructure cash in a heart beat and never have to go back to the straining tax payers for any funding for it.

East-coasters of all political stripes love the gas tax because most of them are city-dwellers or have short commutes. Those of us in fly-over country have to drive farther to go to work and will be disproportionately affected by this targeted tax.

I am not automatically agaiinst raising taxes, especially if it supports spending that will ultimately help economic growth. However, it is downright idiotic to raise a tax that everyone will feel. Gas price hikes affect (and irritate) all voters. Period. This would not be a smart move.

I read last week that less than half of the current fuel tax funds road and bridge projects, something like 16% goes to retire the national debt (yeah, right) and the rest is wasted on trails, bike paths, light rail, etc. If the fuel tax were used exclusively on roads and bridges we wouldn’t need this what will probably turn out to be a boondoggle. We are talking Washington here.

What’s troubling is that Nixon gave us OSHA, the EPA, Vietnam surrender, wage & price controls, one sided opening to China and more in order to win landslide re-election. What will Trump do to be viewed as the moderate in 2020?

In Washington state, the home of Jay Inslee´s greeny weeny governorship, the gas tax is the go to resource for blowing our income on carbon tax and bike trails, leaving roads and bridges to the last in line. It is a criminal misuse and abuse on an immense scale. So the very last thing the establishment republicans in the swamp should be considering is this harebrained addition of gasoline tax. when there is so much waste that can first be pruned

Well lets see now.....They need to make up for the (grossly overrated, some might say) tax cut on income so they put a tax increase on gas which should produce more funds than the tax decrease amounted to. This will, in my opinion, produce a net loss of income to we the people.

This once was called "robbing Peter to pay Paul". Is this what is going to happen ??

Before coming back to the taxpayers for more money, first things first. Quit paying the Palestinians, the Pakistanis, Turkey, NATO´s bills, the UN´s bills, Mexico´s bills, Puerto Rico´s bills, people that can work but don´t´s bills, and guaranteeing every possible catastrophe or event by the U.S., including union pensions. There are Federal money and State money taxes that are designated for infrastructure. Problem is, the money is confiscated and put into the General Fund to be spent elsewhere. Let´s use that money first. Second, as we are building more electrical cars, they won´t be paying the taxes. This will place the burden on gas vehicles only. Third, Musk will really like the idea and it will give Telsa a shot in the arm because they are electric. He´ll make billions.

Bad idea to raise the gas tax.

Calif just raised gas taxes by 12 cents a gal. In the meantime, all across the State, every major highway public rest stop is closed for days at a time with big signs blocking the offramp saying CLOSED FOR REPAIRS. In reality, they are closed because they can´t afford to keep them open. They cost too much money for the utilities and maintenance so they close them for budgetary reasons. This infrastructure boondoggle is one of those extravagant dreams that simply said, we just can´t afford right now.

A small bounty on illegals and SS disability cheaters would provide more money than this in the first year. While that is happening unleash private investigation into government waste in all departments. Successful investigators get a percentage of money saved and you would get even more money.

“How many times is this going to go on until the American people say enough is enough?” Florida Sen. Bill Nelson asked in response to the latest school shooting in Parkland, Fla., where 17 died. That means agents and officers have to go out into the community, said Thomas D. Homan, the agency’s deputy director.

Special counsel Robert Mueller is not yet done investigating whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia during the 2016 election after indicting 13 Russian nationals and three Russian entities for seeking to interfere in the 2016 election, according to a report Friday. The criminal indictment of 13 Russians for allegedly trying to influence “U.S. political and electoral processes” provides no evidence of any collusion between these Russians – or any other Russian officials – and the Trump campaign in the 2016 presidential race. While the description of alleged Russian activities is very troubling, it is important to note that the indictment makes no mention of any hacking or other activity that changed ballots, vote counts, or actually interfered with the election.
