People Were Not Happy With Katie
Couric and Mike Tirico During the
Opening Ceremony

Good Housekeeping, by Megan Friedman

Original Article

Mike Tirico and Katie Couric were cohosts during NBC´s broadcast of the Winter Olympics opening ceremony, which aired in the U.S. on Friday night. The ceremony kicked off the 2018 games, which are being held in PyeongChang, South Korea this year, and it was Couric´s big return to NBC. The ceremony was filled with spectacle, symbolism, and national pride. But some viewers didn´t take too kindly to the commentary on the NBC broadcast, and took to social media to vent that they felt it distracted from the technical beauty of the event. Others felt their commentary focused too much on

They - and other NBC commentators - have an obsessive need to voice-over everything, spouting useless, tedious, intrusive “explanation”. It was impossible to enjoy the opening spectacle, and ice skating music is obliterated with endless droning “toe loop, double axel”…ad nauseum, ad infinitum.

Neither Tirico, who seems lost amongst the sporting events, and Katie, who just sob stories and gushes all over the place, is right for this. Most of us would prefer subtitles.

Those who are not fans of this undynamic duo will enjoy the tweets.

Exciting: (And why we watch the Olympics.) The 17-year-old (who looked about 13 or 14) Red Gerard doing the most incredible feats I’ve seen any snowboarder do. The scourge of the ski slopes, when in performance/competition they absolutely amaze.

The shots of the backyard setup at his Colorado home, where he first trained, was one of the few interesting “flashback” stories. Watching the Games via DVR recording, we usually FF past this stuff.

The celebrities and their bosses think, somehow, that the celebrities ARE the Olympics and that the advertising between the chattering sessions are the Olympic events.

I´m sick of "sports" and news and advertising

Why rehire Katie in the first place. She is boring. She drones on and on. Let us watch the Olympics in peace. Someone needs to tell them that we are watching the outstanding athletes not the blabbermouths. As a result, I did not get to see the young man who won the Gold because I can´t stand Katie or the NK´s.

Agree with all the above. Couric is vastly overrated. She specializes in low ratings. Yet, she continues to work at lavish salaries. I don´t get it.

Katie Couric should have stayed out to pasture...

It´s also the thing I hate about watching football (only college ball now): Incessant chatter about statistics, people and places I don´t care about, inside jokes and stories, only interrupted by stupid commercials. At least ´´Dandy Don´´ and Howard Cosell were entertaining!

Sometimes I think those people are paid by the word. They can´t shut up when something more important than them is happening! Also, we don´t need repeated zoom-in shots of celebrities in the audience!

Watched the Opening on the BBC. No ads, no jingoism, no star-making hype, no Macy’s Parade chitchat. The announcers remaned silent at least half the time. And the BBC didn’t need to show a map with each nation’s location.

Alas, many American viewers have received a fraudulent education from US public schools and have no idea where Latvia or the Philippines might be.

As one commenter noted on a web site elsewhere, the actual entrance of the US delegation took 62 seconds. NBC looped various camera shots to extend it to 7 full minutes. Shameless.

Re #6, NBC treated the US team’s entry into the opening ceremony as "Queen Lindsey Vonn enters with her entourage". It was all about Tiger’s ex-mistress, who mugged and posed and preened and took selfies for the NBC cameras. (To anyone with a relative on the U. S. Team, good luck. If they weren’t very near Lindsey, they didn’t get a closeup.)

As for the looping back on the U.S. Team, there were 244 of them so it would have been nice to see all of them. As it was, most of the looping went to Vonn. Seeking her out, wherever she happened to be.

Excuse additional Reply, but I went to find out where I’d heard of Tirico before. He did play by play for ESPN Monday Night Football for ten years; then was not renewed.

And this is interesting:

Tirico´s period at ESPN was not without controversy. Two books about the network, ESPN: The Uncensored History (2000) by former New York Times sportswriter Michael Freeman and 2011´s These Guys Have All the Fun (by Washington Post writers James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales), recount allegations of sexual harassment. Tirico, for example, was suspended by the network for three months in 1992 for multiple incidents involving attempted groping, sexual solicitation, and stalking of female co-workers.[37][38]

Following the ouster of NBC colleague Matt Lauer in late 2017 over sexual misconduct, along with other high-profile names in the media industry, the network indicated it knew of Tirico´s past when it hired him from ESPN and received assurances from Tirico that he had changed. Thus NBC has no intention of replacing him on Olympics coverage.[39] According to John Wildhack, a former ESPN executive who is now the athletics director at Syracuse, "That happened well over two decades ago and Mike has been nothing but the consummate professional (since)."[40]

Oh, is that all? Good old NBC.

Tirico is taking Costas’s place.

In re #8: It´s the same Katie Couric who produced a "documentary" on guns that was caught red-handed deceptively editing specifically to make 2nd Amendment supporters look stupid (they later claimed they were merely engaging in some kind of "artistic license"--for a documentary!), and during which, in order to "prove" how "easy" it is to buy guns interstate, either (a) a couple or three federal crimes were committed or (b) they lied about the whole thing. When this was brought to their attention, they more or less denied the transactions happened the way they were reported. Katie ultimately tried to disclaim any responsibility for the whole thing IIRC.
